1.THESCHOOL

TheSchoolislocatedinahistoricalpalacewithover2,000m2ofspacetoenjoywhilelearninginarelaxedenvironment.Itisplacedjustwherethe11thcenturyArabwallswerestandingandstillabigpartof themhave remained inside thebuildingpenetrating through the school andgettinginsidetheclassroomsCalle Caballeros is one of themain streets that runs through the district of El Carmen, it is ahotbed of activity during the day and transforms at sunset into the centre of the nightlife inValencia.With a plethora of great restaurants, cool shops, dazzling street art, superbmuseums and aneclecticmixofpeople,ElCarmenoffers somethingnewandexcitingeveryday for touristsandlocalsalike.Theschoolissurroundedbyhistoryandcultureandyoudon’thavetolookfartodiscoverworldfamous sights such as Plaza de la Virgen which houses one of Valencia’s most emblematicbuildings–LaCatedraldeSantaMaria,wheretheoriginalHolyGrailissaidtolive.

3.1PLACEMENTTEST

All students (except total beginners) take an oral placement test that takes approximately 10minutestocomplete.Thesestudentswhohaven’tcompletedthewrittenpartofthetestonlinewillhavetodoit(ittakesabout30minutes).EachstudentisevaluatedbytheDirectorofStudiestogainanaccuratemeasureofhisorherlanguageabilities,includingoralability.

Once the test has been corrected students are placed in a class appropriate to their level ofSpanish.Lessonsstartthesameday.

3.2STUDENTS’WELCOMEPACK

AllnewstudentsreceiveaWelcomePack.ThosewholiveinapartmentsorstudioswillreceivetheWelcomeFolderwiththekeysonthedayofarrival.ThosewhostayinhallsofresidenceorwithahostfamilywillreceivetheWelcomePackonthefirstdayofclassattheReceptionDeskoftheschool.

3.3ORIENTATIONMEETING

After the testall the studentswillparticipate in theorientationmeetingwhere theywill get toknowothernewstudents,thestaffoftheschoolandreceiveusefulinformation.TheywillreceivetheircoursebookandclassschedulecorrespondingtotheirlevelofSpanish.

3.4CITYTOUR

All new students are taken on an orientation tour of Valencia on the first afternoon of theircourse.Wehighlyrecommendallthestudentstoparticipate,asitwillbeanotherchancetomeetnewpeopleandtogetfamiliarwiththecityandtheschoolsurroundings.

The tour offers an opportunity to get to know the practicalities of life in a new city, such asfamouslandmarks,publictransport,discounttravel,currencyexchangeetc.

4.2.METHODOLOGY

ThemainobjectiveofourSpanishcoursesisto improvethestudents’communicativeskills.Theemphasis of classroom activities is therefore on the development of the students’ abilities tospeakandunderstandspokenSpanish.Forthisreason,classesareconductedentirelyinSpanishandstudentsaregivenplentyofopportunitytopracticetheirspokenSpanish.

Dueattentionisalsopaidtogrammar,vocabulary,readingandwritingskills,andawidevarietyofmaterialsisused.

Students who attend individual classes will have a course designed specifically to meet theirparticularneeds.

The Director of Studies, who is also responsible for ensuring that students are placed in theappropriatelevelandthattheirprogressissatisfactory,carefullysupervisestheteachingandthecourseprogramme.

While the atmosphere in the classroom is generally relaxed and informal, students should bepreparedtoworkhardandparticipatefully.

4.3COURSEBOOKSANDMATERIAL

Atextbook isused inclasstogetherwithdiversecoursematerialpreparedbyourteachers.Theenrolment fee includes the firstbookandadditionalmaterial.Whenstudentschange fromoneleveltoanothertheycanexchangetheirusedbookforthenextbook(alsousedbyotherstudent)oriftheyprefertohaveanewbooktheycanalsobuyitfor20€/25€.

4.4SPANISHLEVELS

Españoléoffers8differentlevelsfromabsolutebeginnerstoadvanced.Theselevelsarebasedonthe Cervantes Institute programme, following the guidelines of the Common EuropeanFrameworkofReferenceforLanguages.

Aftertakingtheentranceexam,studentswillbeinformedoftheirrespectivelevel.

4.5.CHANGESOFLEVEL

It is possible to change levels if the student feels that his/her class is too easy or too difficult,he/shecantalktotheirteacherortheDirectorofStudiesandtheywillfindasolution.It isalsopossiblethattheteachersuggeststhatthestudentchangeslevelifthestudent’slevelofSpanishdoesnotmatchtheleveloftheclass.

4.6.PROGRESSTEST

Thereareclasstestsat theendofsomeunits for levelsA1-B1aswellasendof levelexamsonhigherlevels(B2-C2).Teacherskeeptrackofstudent’sprogressonacontinuousbasis.

4.7.ATTENDANCE

Werequirestudentstoattendatleast90%ofthelessons.Ifforanyreasonastudentknowsthathe/shewillbeabsentforadayormorehe/sheshouldinformtheDirectorofStudies.

4.8REPORTSANDCERTIFICATES

At the end of the course students will receive a report and a certificate. The report is anevaluationwrittenby theteachersabout theprogressmadeby thestudent.Thecertificate isadiplomawithall thedetailsaboutthecourse(personaldata, level,duration,assistance,etc.). Incaseofunjustifiedabsencethatexceeds10%ofthedurationofthecoursewearenotobligedtohandoutthereportandthecertificate.

5.OTHERSERVICES

5.1.INTERNET/WI-FI

The school has computerswith Internet access at students’ disposal and there is alsoWI-FI allover the building, so students can also bring their own laptop. TheWI-FI key is shown on thenoticeboards.

6.ARRIVAL

6.1.AIRPORTTRANSFER

WecanarrangetransferonarrivalatanddeparturefromValenciaairport,trainandbusstation.To guarantee the transfer we need to know the arrival details (date, time, place, and flightnumber) at least two days before the student’s arrival. If there are last minute changes, thestudentshouldinformtheschool,otherwisewecannotbeheldresponsibleforthetransfer.Onarrivalourdriverwillbewaitingforthestudentattheairport"MeetingPoint"intheArrivalsHall(nexttothecafeteriaintheArrivalsHall).Hewillbeholdingasignwiththestudent’sname.Thestudentwillbedrivendirectlytotheiraccommodation.

Ifthearrivalisatthebusortrainstation,ourdriverwillwaitatthemainentrance.

7.ACCOMMODATION

Theaccommodationofficersareatthestudents’disposalduringofficetimes.

7.1.HOWTOGETTOTHEACCOMMODATION:

For students living with host families: Students should call the host family at least oneweekbeforearrivaltotellthemtheapproximatetimeofarrivalorletusknowitsothatamemberofthehostfamilywillbeathometowelcomethestudentonhis/herfirstdayinValencia.

For students living in sharedapartmentsand studios:Studentswhoaregoingto live inoneofthestudentapartmentsorinastudiowillreceivetheinstructionsonwheretheyhavetopickupthe keys on arrival together with their accommodation details at least to weeks before thestartingdate.For students living in residence:Theycangodirectlytotheresidenceonarrival, theReceptiondeskisopen24h,theywillbewelcomedandgiventheroomkeys.

7.2.CHECKINGINANDOUT

CHECKINTIME:Sundayafter2:00p.m.CHECKOUTTIME:Saturdaybefore12:00p.m.

Theaccommodation isavailablebetween14:00a.m.ontheSundayprior tothefirstdayof thecourse (Monday)until 12:00p.m.on theSaturday following the lastdayof class (Friday). Extranightsmightbeavailableatthepublishedprices.

7.3.DEPOSITFORACCOMMODATION

Allstudentsstaying inapartmentsandprivatestudiosmust leaveadepositof100€.Wedonotrequireadepositfortheothertypesofaccommodation.Thedeposithastobepaidbyfillingoutthecreditcardauthorizationform(notincash).Studentswill receive the formtogetherwith thekeysonarrivaland theymustgive it toour staffat theReceptiondeskonthefirstdayofclass.Wewillnotchargeanythingtothecreditcardinadvance.Wewillinformthestudentifanydamagehasbeencausedoriftherehavebeenanyextrachargesforelectricity,waterorgas.Wewillalsochargeanextranightifthestudentdoesnotleavetheiraccommodation by 12:00 pm on the departure day. The corresponding amounts will then bedeductedfromthedeposit.Alistofdamagesspecifyingtheamounttobedeductedforimproperuseofthefacilitiesandofadditionalchargesismadeavailabletothestudents.

7.4.THEACCOMODATIONWEOFFER

7.4.1.SHAREDAPARTMENTSThistypeofaccommodationgivesstudentsthechancetolivewithstudentsfromothercountries.Eachapartmenthas threeor fourbedroomsandoneor twobathrooms,whicharesharedwithotherstudents.Allapartmentshavefullyequippedkitchens,aloungewithTV,awashingmachineandaniron.

Location: The apartments are located close to the school, no more than 20 minutes away bypublictransport.

Utilities:Thepriceincludesthecostsofelectricity,waterandgasuptoacertainexpense(normaluse).Itisimportanttoturnoffthelightsandheatingwhenleavingtheapartment,thiswaytherewillnotbeanyextracharges.

Ifthereareextrachargestobedeductedfromthedepositthecostwillbedividedbetweenallthestudentssharingtheapartment.

Flatmates:Thepeoplesharingtheapartmentareusuallyinternationalstudentsfromtheschool.Thenumberofstudents ineachapartmentvaries,dependingontheapartmentandthetimeofthe year. Some apartments have 23 students, others 58.Wemake an effort to accommodatestudents of different native languages in the apartments, so that students will speak asmuchSpanishaspossibleamongthemselves.

Meals:We recommend that our students talkwith the other students in the apartment aboutwhethertheywillcookmealstogetheroreatseparately.

Bedlinensandtowels:Studentsshouldbringtowels.Theschoolwillprovidesheetsandblankets,buttheywillhavetotakecareofthelaundryofbedlinenandtowels.

Cleaning:Studentsshoulddiscussandagreeupondividingcleaningresponsibilitiesamongallthestudentswholiveintheapartment.Onceeverytwoweeksacleaningladywillcleanthecommonareascorridor,livingroom,kitchenandbathroom.Theapartmenthastobetidyandthekitchenleftwithoutdirtydishes,etc.,otherwiseshewillnotbeabletoclean.Laundry:Theapartmentshaveawashingmachineforstudentstodotheirownlaundry.PleaseseetheAnnex1:Rulesofconductinsharedapartments.(Informationwegivestudentsonarrival)

7.4.2.HOSTFAMILIESLivingwithaSpanishfamily isthebestwaytobecomefamiliarwiththeSpanish lifestyle,gettoknowSpanishcustomsandpractise the language.There isa familyatmosphere,onlySpanish isspoken and theremight be other students in the house, so students will find it easy tomakefriendswiththem.

Weselectourfamiliescarefullysothatourstudentsfeelcompletelyateasewiththem.Thehostsmay be an older couple, a younger couple with children or a single person. Students can belodged in a singleordouble roomand can chooseamong three typesofboard (breakfast, halfboardorfullboard).

We recommend that our students try to be as open minded as possible and to adapt theirbehaviourtothenormsandschedulesofthehousehold.LivingwithaSpanishfamilymaybeverydifferentfromlifeintheirhomecountry.Ifstudentshaveanydoubts,theycantalktothefamilyas if itwere theirown family.The familywillbehappy to learnabout thestudentsandhis/herhomecountryandwouldliketohelphimtolearnabouttheSpanishlanguageandculture.

Location: The host families are located close to the school, nomore than 30minutes away bypublictransport.

Meals: The familywill prepare themeals.Meal times in Spainmight be very different to thestudent’sownmeal timesbut students should try togetused to them (seepage25). Studentscannotcookatthefamilyhouse.Iftheywanttousethefridgetheyshouldaskforpermission,itisuptothefamilytoallowit.

Bed and breakfast: is suitable for studentswhowant tobemore independentduring theday.Spanishbreakfastissmallandusuallyconsistsofacupofcoffeewithasliceoftoastandjamanda“magdalena”(adaintycake).

Half board: This includes twomealsaday,breakfastanddinner. If the studentprefers tohavelunchinsteadofdinner,ithastobeagreedwiththehostfamilybeforehand.Werecommendthatstudentstakeatleasthalfboardiftheyareinterestedinfeelingpartofthefamilyandinordertopracticethelanguage.

Fullboard:Thisconsistsofthreemealsaday,breakfast,lunchanddinner.ItisthebestoptionifthestudentwantsintegratewiththeSpanishcultureandenjoySpanishcuisine.

Linen and laundry: Studentswillbeprovidedwithbed linen, towelsandone laundrywashperweek.Thehostmotherwilltakecareofthelaundry.Studentsshouldaskonthefirstdaywheretheycanleavethelaundrytobewashed.

In Valencia, apart from Spanish, there is a dialect called Valenciano. In Valencia Spanish isspokenallthetimebutsomesignsaswellasstreetnamesarewritteninValenciano.

SpanishpeoplegenerallyhavetheirmealslaterthaninotherEuropeancountries:Breakfastisbetween7.30and10a.m.anditusuallyconsistsofmilk,coffeeorjuiceandtoastor croissants.Around11a.m. there isanotherbreakwhen they takecoffeeora juiceandalittlesnack,saltyorsweet.

Lunchisservedbetween2.00and4.00p.m..Thisisthebiggestmealofthedayandconsistsoftwo dishes and dessert. The familywill change your sheets and towels once aweek, andwash your clothes once aweek.Don’tusethewashingmachineyourself.
