From the Pastor’s Corner
CYCLE C 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time
T he Pharisees and scribes began to complain, saying, 'This man
welcomes sinners and eats with them.'" Jesus knew these
self-righteous religious leaders were complaining. And he
knew they needed to learn a lesson. So, in addition to giving a lived example of welcoming the
company of "tax collectors and sinners," Jesus also directly taught the skeptics about the
importance of welcoming those who have been lost. Today's Gospel gives a powerhouse lineup
of three parables that all teach a similar message: rejoice over the lost sheep, rejoice over the lost
coin, and rejoice over the return of the lost son.
The theme can be summarized in the simple directive: rejoice don't reject. When someone
who isn't part of the "fold" appears in church, this is cause for rejoicing! It should not be cause
for gossip, sideways glances, or nervous whispers about what to do or say. Rather a genuine smile
and word of welcome would be in order at the very least, and a heartfelt invitation to join the
community would be totally appropriate.
Too often we become complacent about our Christian company. We get used to seeing the
same people every Sunday and forget about the "lost" men and women who are outside the
bounds of our comfort zone. Jesus gives us the image of an active shepherd who goes "after the
lost one until he finds it," and a diligent widow who will "sweep the house, searching carefully"
until she finds her coin. He tells us of a father who "ran to his son, embraced and kissed him," in
spite of the separation they had faced. We too are called to take initiative in seeking out those who
are lost, and to rejoice heartily when they finally do come back home.
Prayer to Remember 9/11
Heavenly Father,
on this day, a terrible act of brutality
was visited upon our people.
We ask for your grace upon
the souls of those who died this day,
and the loved ones they left behind.
Bless those who, today, work unceasingly
to protect us all from further acts of violence.
Change the hearts and minds of those
who would murder the innocent in your name.
Help us to remember Christ's victory over all
death.
Lead us all to you, Lord, in a true unity,
begotten not of blood that was shed in anger,
but shed by your Son, out of love for us.
Amen.

Many RCIA candidates are drawn to the
Church because they have experienced
the warmth and welcome of our parish
community. When you volunteer to provide a light
breakfast snack for RCIA, you continue this
wonderful tradition of hospitality that embodies our
parish community.
RCIA meets in the rectory every Sunday from
10am-noon, Sept. 25, 2016 until May 1, 2017, so as
you can see, we need many volunteers and as the
saying goes, many hands make light work. No need to
fuss – just drop off muffins, coffee cake or
something light in the rectory a few minutes before
or after going to Mass. To welcome & support our
candidates, please call Lisa Dolan at 758-0119
Thinking of Becoming Catholic? The parish community of St. Christopher and
St. Sylvia invites all adults interested in becoming Catholic – those not baptized, those baptized in other Christian traditions, and baptized Catholics who never received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation –
to join us on a journey of discovery. Find out how Catholics follow Jesus to deepen their lives of
faith. Come and see what the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is all about.

pray for them as they move on to new
beginnings elsewhere. We thank them
for their grateful service over the years
