Sunday, 20 May 2018 Pentecost Sunday Year B
From the Dean’s Desk
Dear Friends,
The late summer we experienced this
year brought about the inevitable
presence of bushfires with the
accompanying damage that is part of
the bushfire’s nature. As tragic and harmful as they
may be, bushfires are an essential element to the
regrowth of the forests. Without the heat that is
generated by the bushfire the eucalyptus pods cannot
burst forth and allow for new plantation. Fire and heat
are a necessary accompaniment to this new growth.
In all reality, without these intense fires, the bush
would die.
This image of the Australian bushfire can become an
image of the Solemnity we celebrate today. At the
time of the first Pentecost, described in the first
reading [Acts 2:1-11], the disciples were overcome
with doubts, uncertainty and fear as they tried to come
to terms not only with the tragic death of Jesus, but
also with the more astounding rumours concerning the
empty tomb and talk of his appearance among his
followers. After experiencing the Ascension of the
Lord, these disciples retreated to the upper room in
fear. Pentecost brings about a tremendous change in
their lives.
Amid all this clamour, the Spirit descends upon them,
and Luke describes this in beautiful and powerful
images: ‘they heard what sounded like a powerful
wind from heaven, the noise of which filled the
entire house…and something appeared to them
that seemed like tongues of fire; these separated
and came to rest on the head of each of them.
They were filled with the Holy Spirit’ [Acts 2:2-4].
Luke’s progression in speaking about the event is
interesting: they hear at first a powerful wind; its
noise fills the house; they see something like
tongues of fire; they become filled with the Holy
Spirit. Only after hearing, seeing and experiencing the
presence of the Spirit were the disciples ready for
mission. The effect on the disciples of this event is
astronomical. They immediately leave the safety of
the upper room and begin with zeal and energy their
mission to preach the Gospel, which continues to this
day.
Like a bushfire, Pentecost – and the presence of the
Holy Spirit – clears the ‘undergrowth’ of fear, doubt
and anxiety in our lives. The Spirit’s presence in us
and in our Church is a unifying force for good. We
have received the Spirit at our Baptism. We had that
same Spirit given to us in its fullness and giftedness at
our Confirmation, when we were infused with the
seven gifts of the Spirit: wisdom, understanding,
counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the
Lord. These are gifts for discernment and for
mission. We should be able to recognise, through the
presence of this same Spirit, the individual gifts we
possess. Paul lists the gifts that emanate from, the
Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, trustfulness, gentleness and self-
control [Galatians 5:25]. With the assistance of the
Spirit we are then able to utilise them for the good of
the Christian Community.
John reminds us in today’s gospel passage [John
15:26-27.16:12-15], that this Spirit is our Advocate (or
Paraclete) – our helper in our mission and in the living
out of the Christian life. It is the Spirit who will lead us
to the complete truth [16:13] and what he teaches us
will be taken from Jesus, so that there is a continuity in
formation and mission.
May we be always open to the presence of the Spirit
and to his promptings:
‘Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and
enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your
Spirit and they will be created and you will renew the
face of the earth’.

Statue - Our Lady Help of Christians Have you seen our new statue? When entering the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, look to the left. She is absolutely beautiful. We especially give thanks to a very generous parishioner who has kindly donated Her, but chooses anonymity. We will bless the statue on Her feast day, May 24 at the 12.30pm Mass.
Baptism Accessories The parish office stock baptism bibs, sashes and candles for the baptism ceremony at very reasonable prices. We also have for sale a hand made outfit for a boy, 6–12 months. You are welcome to view items Monday– Friday 9.00am-4.00pm. A very special thank you to Beverley Horne is due. Bev makes the bibs and sashes on a voluntary basis sourcing materials from many avenues. This is why we can offer them at such a reasonable price. Great work Bev, you do a wonderful job.
Collectors Of what I hear you ask. We are short a few ‘money collectors’ at the 9.30am Mass on Sundays. If you attend this Mass and would like to put your hand up to help, see David at the end of Mass or contact the parish office. Remember, this is where the funds begin to help with all our ministries. God bless.
Catholic Foundation May Appeal Today, The Catholic Foundation will launch its May appeal which supports our works of Faith, particularly our seminarians and their good works within the wider community. Meet Seminarian Tom Green. He joined the seminary in 2016, and embodies a generous spirit of charity and service, committed to serving God and others. Throughout 2017, Tom visited students in state schools and provided catechises, scripture studies and taught children how to pray. Every Friday, Tom also visits the local refugee centre and provides food hampers to the less fortunate. His team also provides financial and medical support to those in desperate need. A gift for our seminarians is also a gift to the wider community. Please become an Ambassador of Faith today and donate a $7 monthly gift – that’s less than $2 per week. Donate today and sustain our works of Faith across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains. For more information, or to donate online, please visit www.yourcatholicfoundation.org.au or call 02 8838 3482.

Cloister Café What a beautiful time of year to soak up the sunshine and enjoy a cuppa with some friends. Take time out this Sunday to make new acquaintances - we have a few new parishioners who may be feeling a little lost with the well formed groups of parishioners. I would also like to thank the volunteers who do a wonderful job. Unfortunately we have lost a couple of members of our team and now need to recruit a few more. It’s not hard work and quite rewarding. You would only be required to assist on one Sunday per month. If you think this may interest you, please call Marian Polizzi (Hospitality Coordinator) 9630 4019 or the Parish Office.
St Pat’s Matters I hope by now you have picked up the last edition of St Pat’s
Matters. This magazine is only made possible by the contributions
of people associated with the parish (and by my relentless
persuasion of trying to prise an article from all sources).
Which brings me to:- Sharing ‘MUM’ MEMORIES
We’ve just celebrated Mother’s Day, the perfect segue into
sharing treasured memories about our precious mothers and how
they shaped and influenced our lives. This you can do by sending
your reflections for inclusion in the next St Pat’s Matters, for the
parish family to read.
Email submissions to M. Polizzi at balmap5@bigpond.com or leave
at the parish office in an envelope marked ‘For St Pat’s Matters’.
MAY - The Month of Mary The month of May is devoted to Our Blessed Mother
Mary. Every day in this month we can offer presents to
Our Lady by saying a prayer to her.
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, works, joys, and suffering of this day in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, reparation for sins, the reunion of all Christians; I offer them for the intentions of our Bishops and of all Apostles of Prayer and in particular for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.
