St Thomas Aquinas Catholic School & Sixth Form
Student Information
Booklet 2020
Welcome to St Thomas Aquinas
Catholic School
A warm welcome to St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Secondary School.
I know that you will be disappointed not to be experiencing a full
induction into our school but I do hope that this booklet will give you
some information about what you can expect in September.
One of the most important things to know is that our mission
statement "Christ is at the centre of our school community where we
live, love and learn together" is at the heart of all that we do.
I hope that the information we are sharing with you here will help to
address any of the worries or nerves that you might have and answer
some of the questions that I know you are keen to ask.
Your Head of Year, Mr Stephenson, and the Assistant Principal in
charge of Year 7, Ms O’Reilly are really looking forward to hearing
from you on our dedicated email for any work you want to share or any
questions you might want to ask Year6@stacs.org.
Remember the school website we have weekly updates through June
and plenty of resources and activities to help you to learn more about
our school.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS at
STACS This is Simon. He is in Year 7 and has 90% attendance.
Simon thinks this is pretty good and so do his parents.
Questions for you to answer:
If you got 90% in a test, would you be happy?
Do you think 90% attendance is good?
What does 90% attendance actually mean?
90% attendance = ½ day missed every week!
1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons
MISSED!
If you missed 4 weeks each year, you would miss 100 lessons a
year! Can you imagine how much this would impact your learning
and progress?
90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school = ½ a school
year missed! This would clearly affect your GCSE grades!
Students who have attendance of 97% or above achieve the
highest grades.
Students who have an attendance of 90% or less fail to
achieve the grades they are capable of getting.
Good attendance gives you
An increased lifetime salary. This means you are more likely to
get a better paid job, have more money and, therefore, a
higher quality of life.
Improved health.
A longer life!
At St Thomas Aquinas, we believe that EDUCATION IS A GIFT
and EVERY MOMENT COUNTS.
You will hear your teachers, form tutors and Head of Year say
this to you a lot during your time with us.
Attendance has a direct impact on the grades you leave school
with so it is important you are in school every day – our target
is 97% attendance and 100% punctuality.
Having time off school also has an impact on your emotional
wellbeing. It can be difficult to maintain friendships if you have
lots of time off and you might miss out on important social
events.
By being in school every day, you will show us that you are a
COMMITTED LEARNER and EXCEPTIONAL PERSON – there
are weekly rewards for this!

Behaviour Expectations at
STACS
The aim of this information is to enable you to understand the clear
expectations that we have of you and your behaviour in and out of
school. Everything we do, everything we ask for is to enable you to
become committed learners and exceptional people. We do not
apologise for wanting the best for you as your education is a gift and
we will make sure that every moment counts here at STACS.
Why is it so important?
The behaviour we show is an outward sign of respect, pride and
belonging to a school community.
This means a respect for others learning time in a classroom.
Pride in displaying the right values as a member of the Aquinas
family in our local community.
Belonging to a school that is serious about education.
So how do you become a committed learner?
What is a consequence?
A consequence at STACS is on the same night either a C1 (30 minute)
or C2 (1 hour) detention. For example if you wear the wrong uniform
such as not bringing your tie into school you will receive a C1 30 minute
detention on the same night.
If you decide to talk and disrupt the learning of your classmates in a
lesson you will be given verbal warnings. If you decide not to listen to
the advice of your teacher and show you want to learn then you will
be told to leave the lesson and sit in another classroom with another
teacher. This is called a Faculty Removal. This is not normal behaviour
here at STACS and therefore the consequence is a C2 1 hour
detention on the same night.
Why is it so important?
We want you to feel free to learn and to experience the best
education here at STACS. To be exceptional people, to be role models
to others, to be successful in life, to feel liberated to enjoy learning
and be able to achieve with pride you must be committed to your
learning. We will ensure that we can offer you that learning
experience in every classroom with a consistent approach to dealing
with negative and positive behaviour.
REWARDS at STACS
We want all students who show that they are COMMITTED
LEARNERS and EXCEPTIONAL PEOPLE to be recognised and valued
in our school community.
Here is an example of some of the awards we have at our school.
Attendance Awards
We are launching our ‘Get to Green’ award system in September. Each
Monday, your form tutor will challenge you to be in school each day
that week. If you complete a full week, you will ‘Get to Green’ the next
Monday and will be entered into a prize draw with students in your
form for a prize such as a skip the queue lunch pass for that week.
Faculty Awards
Each week you will receive Praise Logs for demonstrating attributes
of a Committed Learner and Exceptional Person.
Subject teachers will award one praise log every lesson for students
who go above and beyond and select one student per week to give a
praise postcard to.
Heads of Faculty will select one student from subject teachers’
committed learners to be the Faculty Committed Learner of the
Week – this student will be invited to #HotChocFriday with Mr
Martin (Principal) along with students chosen by the Senior
Leadership Team.
Following a Progress Review, students with the highest attitude to
learning grades will be awarded with certificates in assembly.
Form Tutor/Head of Year Awards
Form Tutors will award one praise log every form time for students
who go above and beyond and select one student per week to give a
praise postcard to.
Heads of Year will select one student from their year to be their
Exceptional Person of the Week. This student gets a certificate in
assembly and is invited to a special Head of Year breakfast.
As you can see there are lots of opportunities to shine at STACS and
show you are a ‘Committed Learner or an Exceptional Person’.
