Introduction and brief comments to tables and diagrams
In this review, the Market Research Centre at ASM Holding introduces development dynamics of truck production, market and parc in the Russian Federation for the period 2001-2012.
The research was performed by ASM Holding with the use of data submitted by the manufacturers, Federal Service of State Statistics, Federal Customs Service, State Automobile Inspection (GAI), Association of Russian Automakers (OAR) and other organizations.
The review contains 20 tables and 5 figures.
Table 1 shows dynamics of Russian production of trucks up to 5.0t GVW in 2001-2012. The table separates production of domestic models from production of foreign models assembled in Russia. It may be seen from the table that the total truck output in the pre-crisis year 2007 grew ХХ% vs. 2001, while output of foreign models in 2007 grew ХХ times vs. 2003, the year when it was first launched. The crisis of 2008-2009 severely hit truck production, mostly domestic models. The share of foreign models in the total truck output grew from ХХ% in 2007 to ХХ% in 2012, and it is expected to further grow to ХХ% within 3 or 4 years. At whole, this GVW truck category is recovering from the crisis: the 2010 production volume grew ХХ% year-on-year, and the 2011 output grew ХХ% on the year. Despite a ХХ% output decline in 2012, the growth of production in this truck segment is expected to go on.
Table 2 shows dynamics of Russian production of trucks 5.1t to 20.0t GVW with a breakdown by domestic models and foreign models, as well as models manufactured in the Republic of Belarus. Analysis of this table discovers ХХ% growth of domestic truck production in 2007 vs. 2001. Russian assembly of foreign models in this GVW category started in 2003, and their output in 2007 was ХХ thousand units, or ХХ% of the total. In 2011, production of foreign models in Russia tripled to reach a ХХ% share of the total output in this category, and in 2012 their share expanded to ХХ%. Production of MAZ (Belarus) trucks was up ХХ% in 2008 vs. 2001. However, their output fell more than twice in the crisis year 2009, and then it was up ХХ% on the year in 2010, up ХХ times in 2011 and up another ХХ% in 2012, thus surpassing all previous annual production levels.
Table 3 shows dynamics of Russian production of trucks over 20.0t GVW with a breakdown by domestic models and foreign models. The table also shows production of such trucks in the Republic of Belarus and Ukraine. Analysis of this table discovers growth of production of this category trucks in Russia by ХХ times between 2001 and 2007. Output of foreign models grew ХХ times, however their share in the total output amounted to only ХХ%. After mastering capacities by Volvo Trucks and Renault at Kaluga Plant, the share of foreign models grew to ХХ% in 2010, to ХХ% in 2011, and to ХХ% in 2012, with an outlook for further growth. Output of domestic models grew ХХ% on the year in 2010 and ХХ% in 2011, but it declined by ХХ% in 2012.
Truck production in Belarus rose ХХ% from 2001 to 2008. Then it grew ХХ% on the year in 2010, ХХ% in 2011, and ХХ% in 2012. BelAZ quarry dump trucks were the main driver of the growth in 2011, while MAZ road tractors were enjoying a strong demand in 2012.
AvtoKrAZ (Ukraine) increased truck output ХХ times between 2001 and 2007. The plant was more successful to recover from the crisis, having manufactured up ХХ% (year-on-year) trucks in 2010 and up ХХ% trucks in 2011. However, the output declined ХХ% in 2012.
Table 4 shows dynamics of truck production by manufacturers in Russia. Analysis of this table indicates a stable growth of vehicle output at majority of Russia’s manufacturers. Their total output (including foreign models) grew ХХ% in 2007 vs. 2001. However, the total output of domestic models is declining. In 2012, it was down ХХ% year-on-year.
Foreign models are shown separately in the table. Their production was growing continuously in 2001-2008; it fell ХХ times in 2009; but it grew again nearly twice in 2010, and again ХХ times in 2011. Totally, output of foreign models grew ХХ% in 2012 vs. the pre-crisis year 2007, and a substantial further growth of their production is expected.
Table 5 shows Russian sales of trucks up to 5.0t GVW. The sales analysis indicates that sales volumes of this group of domestic vehicles grew ХХ% in 2007 vs. 2001. In 2009, they took a third of the 2008 volume, but they grew ХХ% in 2010, up ХХ% in 2011, and up ХХ% in 2012 and approached the record level of 2008. The market share of foreign models was ХХ% in 2007. Sales of foreign models fell ХХ% on the year in 2009 but were again up ХХ% in 2010 and up ХХ% in 2011, thus overcoming the 2008 level; they added another ХХ% sales in 2012, and this trend will continue.
4
Table 6 shows Russian sales of trucks 5.1t to 20.0t GVW manufactured in Russia and Republic of Belarus. Analysis of this table indicates that sales of domestic models grew ХХ% in 2007 vs. 2001. In 2009, they fell 2.5 times. They grew ХХ% in 2010 and ХХ% in 2011, but were again down ХХ% in 2012, still yielding to a low 2002 level of sales.
Among the trucks assembled in Russia, foreign models took a ХХ% share in 2009 and ХХ% in 2010. Sales of foreign models nearly doubled in 2011 and 2012, their share being increased to ХХ% and ХХ% respectively.
Table 7 shows Russian sales of trucks over 20.0t GVW manufactured in Russia, Republic of Belarus and Ukraine. Analysis of this table indicates that sales of domestic models grew ХХ times in 2007 vs. 2001. In 2009, they fell ХХ times, but they grew ХХ% in 2010 and nearly reached the 2006 level. Foreign models (ХХ units) only took ХХ% of the total segment sales in 2008. In 2009, their sales quartered to ХХ units, but they grew ХХ times to ХХ units in 2010, even surpassing the 2008 level. Sales of foreign models tripled in 2011 and added another ХХ% in 2012 to increase their share in the segment to ХХ%. The major contributors to that were Volvo, Renault, Iveco AMT and Scania Peter.
Table 8 shows dynamics of Russian sales of new trucks manufactured in Russia, with separated foreign-model sales. Analysis of this table indicates that majority of manufacturers increased sales of their models between 2001 and 2007. In total, sales of trucks manufactured in Russia within the period grew ХХ%. The further growth of sales was ХХ% in 2010, ХХ% in 2011 and ХХ% in 2012. Within the total sales of trucks manufactured in Russia, the share of foreign models is permanently increasing: it was only ХХ% in 2001, ХХ% in 2007, ХХ% in 2011 and ХХ% in 2012.
Table 9 shows truck imports in Russia by major brands and the three GVW categories: up to 5.0t; 5.1t to 20.0t; and over 20.0t. Besides, each category is divided into two vehicle groups: new vehicles and used vehicles. Analysis of this table indicates uninterrupted growth, starting from 2009, of the “new to used” vehicles ratio. Thus, new vehicles were taking only ХХ% of total imports in 2002; ХХ% in 2004; ХХ% in 2006; ХХ% in 2008; ХХ% in 2009 (peak of the crisis); ХХ% in 2010; ХХ% in 2011; and ХХ% in 2012. This was caused not only by increase of import tariffs for used vehicles in 2005, but also by experience of consumers who found that new vehicles would in many cases be repaid sooner than the used ones. The share of heavy-duty trucks (over 20.0t GVW) in the total truck imports of 2012 was ХХ%, while the share of light trucks (up to 5.0t GVW) was ХХ%.
Import of Chinese trucks into Russia started in 2006 with ХХ units (ХХ% of the total truck imports) and reached its peak in 2007 with ХХ thousand units (ХХ%). However, because of quality and maintenance issues, the share of Chinese imports squeezed to ХХ% in 2008, ХХ% in 2009, and ХХ% in 2010. Chinese truck imports in Russia resumed growth in 2011 (ХХ units, ХХ%) and 2012 (ХХ units, ХХ%).
Table 10 shows all truck imports in Russia, including imports from the Republic of Belarus. Imports from Belarus are represented by only new vehicles. The annual imports from Belarus grew from ХХ to ХХ thousand units between 2001 and 2008. Then they fell to ХХ thousand units in 2009 and grew to ХХ thousand units in 2010; ХХ thousand units in 2011, and ХХ thousand units in 2012, which constitutes ХХ%, ХХ% and ХХ% of the total truck market respectively
Table 11 and Figure 1 show all truck market split between GVW categories. The table reveals that the total market grew ХХ% from 2001 to 2007; sales of trucks manufactured in Russia were up ХХ%, and imports (without Belarus) grew ХХ times in 2008 vs. 2001. Imports abruptly fell in 2009 (down ХХ times), but doubled again in both 2010 and 2011, and added ХХ% in 2012.
Table 12 and Figure 2 show the truck market by vehicle origin, in unit terms. Analysis of this table indicates that the share of domestic vehicles was continuously decreasing and squeezed to less than ХХ% in 2008. It increased, however, to ХХ% in the crisis year 2009, but resumed contraction to ХХ% in 2010, ХХ% in 2011, and ХХ% in 2012.
Sales of foreign models assembled in Russia were growing through the whole observed time including the period of crisis. Their market share reached ХХ% in 2010, ХХ% in 2011, and ХХ% in 2012. The market share of Belarusian trucks in 2012 (ХХ%) remained on the 2001 level. The share of imports from other than Belarus countries increased from ХХ% to ХХ% between 2001 and 2008; it contracted to ХХ% in 2009, and resumed growth to ХХ% in 2010, ХХ% in 2011, and ХХ% in 2012.
In whole, the truck market grew from ХХ thousand units in 2010 to ХХ thousand units in 2012, but it still has not restored the 2008 level.

Table 13 shows the truck market in value terms. The values are shown for vehicles of different origin without VAT and customs duties.
Table 14 shows market shares taken by different truck manufacturers. This is a summary table on the Russian market reflecting the current state of domestic manufacturers, foreign OEMs in Russia, and importers from Belarus, Ukraine, and other countries. Imports from Ukraine are shown for reference and are not double-counted in the market total, being already included into imports witout Belarus (see Table 9).
Figure 3 illustrates the structure of the Russian truck market by major manufacturers and importers. GAZ and KAMAZ still remain the leading market players followed by Sollers incorporating UAZ. The market share of Sollers in 2010, 2011 and 2012 was ХХ%, ХХ% and ХХ% respectively. The share of imports reached ХХ% in 2012, a dangerous sign for the country’s security
Table 15 shows the truck parc (vehicles in use) in Russia. The total truck parc grew ХХ% in the recent 12 years. The share of trucks manufactured in Russia contracted by 12 points in the period to ХХ%. The share of the foreign-branded truck fleet increased from ХХ% to ХХ% in the period. With launching new foreign production facilities in Russia, it is expected that the share of foreign models in the truck parc will further grow.
Table 16 and Figure 4 show distribution of the truck parc among federal districts. In all federal districts, majority of the fleet are vehicles manufactured in Russia taking a share of ХХ% to ХХ% with the exception of Far-East Federal District where their share is less (ХХ%) because of proximity to Japan and China. The biggest fleets are in Central Federal District (ХХ% of the total truck parc), Volga Federal District (ХХ%) and Siberian Federal District (ХХ%). The above data are for 2012.
Table 17 shows age structure of the truck parc in Russia. The table and applied diagram suggest that the share of vehicles being in use for more than 10 years is over ХХ%. The number of new vehicles in the truck parc grows slow, mainly for account of up to 5.0t GVW light trucks.
Table 18 shows rejection of the end-of-life trucks from the Russian fleet in 2004-2012. It can be seen from the table that in the course of six years since 2004 the write-off of rejected trucks was on the level of ХХ%-ХХ% (average ХХ%) a year. In 2010, only ХХ% of the truck fleet were written-off, which could be partly explained by consequences of the crisis. A similar write-off (ХХ%) was in 2011, and ХХ% in 2012. With such rate of rejection, the average vehicle life is going to be more than 17.5 years causing big economic and ecological losses.
Figure 5 illustrates length of motor roads in Russia for the period from 1995 to 2011. One can clearly see that the number of paved roads used for mass goods transportation did not virtually grow in 1995-2008, and it was only in 2009 that some improvement appeared. Especially poor situation is noted in construction of federal roads for inter-city haulage. And inclusion of local roads into the common register seems to be just a wish to showcase growth of total road length, which has nothing to do with real development of transport turnover.
Table 19 shows traffic of goods by mode of transport in 2000-2011. It is seen that the road transport handles ХХ% of the total goods traffic in Russia (in million tons), while the share of railway is only ХХ%. This is because motor vehicles are widely used on short legs in all economic sectors.
Table 20 shows turnover of goods by mode of transport. One can see that the road transport handles only ХХ% of the total goods turnover in Russia (in billion ton-km’s), while the share of railway is as much as ХХ% (2011). Since a big goods turnover is based on long-distance carriage, construction of through motorways from Europe to Pacific would sufficiently boost the goods turnover of motor transport.
