So what is Chemical Engineering about?
Chemical Engineering faces multi-scale and multi-disciplinaty
projects related to chemical and process industry.
Chemical and Process Industry (petro-chemical, fine
chemicals, Oil&Gas, pharmaceutical energy production, food,
biotechnological, environmental technology, etc.) concerns
the transformation of substances:
- THERMODYNAMICS
- FLUID DYNAMICS & TRANSPORT PHENOMENA
- UNIT OPERATIONS & DESIGN
- SAFETY AND SUSTAINABILITY

STEM curriculum:
the premise to an international career
• Basic requirements of Master Studies in Chemical
Engineering at Italian level are fulfilled
• The curriculum is characterized by specific courses
addressing biochemical processes, materials, energy
and environment
• Second year of STEM is designed to allow spending up
to two semesters abroad
• Dual Degree program with Columbia University NY
available – others under discussion
• 20+ partner universities available for Erasmus
exchanges

Obtaining Credits - I
• Each activity in the STEM curriculum is classified by name
and type (required/elective – normal course / laboratory)
and number of CFU (“credits”)
• To obtain the degree you must obtain 120 CFU according
to a plan of activities
• In ordinary courses, to obtain the credits you must pass a
final exam
• You have 6 possibility each year to pass the exam
• Each professor defines rules for passing and type of exam
(some professors may ask you to take tests or complete
homeworks or develop reports during the course)
• Each professor defines the dates for the exams

Obtaining Credits - II
• In ordinary courses if successful you obtain a grade
(between 18 and 30 – honors also possible)
• In laboratory courses usually you obtain only a pass /
failed grade
• The successful grades are averaged over credits
• The weighed average is important since it defines the
grade of your final graduation and it is used to rank
students when applying for grants
• There is no direct correspondence among Italian
graduation system and other graduation systems - read

Electives
• Around October 15th you will be required to select
electives (list can be changed at specific deadlines)
• A list of “suggested” electives is available on the
website of STEM
• Electives outside the suggested list may be selected,
but the board of professors should approve them
• A specific presentation of suggested electives will be
organized
• Electives need to be carefully selected taking into
account the term (do not select too many electives in
term 1 due to the number of required courses)
• Check timetable of lessons before selecting electives..!

Credits for Language Activities
• Credits are awarded to students attending language
courses on their own
• Free language courses (English and Italian) are available
to DICAM international students
• Specific rules apply to have credits awarded - please
check on web site of learning activity

Research Projects A and B
• Research Project A is a training activity (internal to university or
external – for non EU residents limitations may apply to external
training)
• A university tutor should be selected by the student for the
activity (or assigned by the Director of Studies - DoS if preferred)
• Proposed activity (title and tutor) need to be submitted for
approval to the board of the program (reference person: Dr.
Cristiana Boi)
• Specific forms need to be filled in before beginning the activity
• Research Project A is fulfilled when the student has dedicated to
the activity 150 hours (as certified by the tutor) and the university
tutor has approved a final report (10-20 pages usually)
• Specific rules apply to have the credits awarded - check on
website

Research Projects A and B
• Research Project B allows for the activity required to
write the graduation thesis (at least 300 hours)
• The activity may be internal or external, in Italy or
abroad, e.g. in Erasmus partner universities (non EU
residents may have limitations due to immigration visa)
• A university tutor should be selected by the student for
the activity (or assigned by the Director of Studies - DoS
if preferred)
• Research Project B is fulfilled when the student has
prepared a graduation thesis approved by the university
tutor
• To obtain the credits, you should defend the thesis on
due dates - see website of the school of engineering

Research Projects A and B
Research Projects A and B:
• may be completely separate activities
• may be “integrated” activities
• suggestion: integrate the activities in a single project
aimed at the preparation of the graduation thesis
• even if you plan to carry our the activities in different
contexts (e.g. RPA in Bologna and RPB abroad) if you
select the same university tutor you may be able to
carry out a preliminary activity here and to be more
prepared for Research Project B)

Erasmus Plus and Overseas
• Specific mobility grants are available to spend periods
abroad by the Erasmus plus and Overseas programs
• Specific applications will be published (usually between
December and January)
• Application is complex – be prepared!!
• Information on the STEM website (still to be published)
and by the responsibles of exchanges
• Erasmus mobility may be for a year, a semester or only
for the graduation thesis project (decreasing difficulties
in finding a destination and suitable study programs)
• Strong suggestion: use second year / second semester
for mobility abroad

Deadlines for applications:
• Erasmus+ deadline in February each year to leave Sept
Y - July Y+1
• Erasmus+ placement deadline in November each year
to leave Jan Y+1 - Jun Y+1
• Decide in advance when you need to apply

Dual Degree
with Columbia University NY
• Dual Degree agreement with CU NY is signed and
available
• For a student enrolled in Bologna, the first year should
be completed before leaving (all 60 CFU obtained) and
all second year should be spent at CU NY
• Tuition fees for year spent at CU NY should be paid at
CU NY – no specific conditions
• CU NY will examine all candidates and has the right to
reject candidates
• a specific study plan will be prepared for the students
accepted in the program
