Ideal Year of ScoutingThe packs that plan, promote, and implement their Ideal Year of Scouting, offer unparalleled experiences for more youth, and are recognized in the Journey to Excellence program.

What is an Ideal Year of Scouting? It’s a method of planning for your unit to do all the Scouting programs and activities you would like to do, with little or no cost to your families. The Ideal Year of Scouting Planning Guide is an important tool in this planning process and it helps pack leaders develop their plan for delivering a quality Scouting program to the youth in the Simon Kenton Council.

What are the components of the Ideal Year of Scouting? What's in it for your Pack? Tools and resources to plan, promote, and implement the Ideal Year of Scouting are available along with other resources at:

Getting The Message OutReaching every boy with the message of Scouting requires informing and inspiring people to consider the value of Scouting to themselves and the community.

Message to Schools

Communicating to principals and teachers the benefits that your pack brings to the school is a critical part of partnering with them. This ensures every family learns about Scouting as a great tool to shape the lives of their children for the future.

Message to Parents

Parents and guardians are the decision makers when it comes to the activities their children will join. We must continually tell and re-tell couples, single parents, and other influencers about Scouting’s promise to give their children advantages in life.

Message to Boys

Boys want to join Scouting because it’s FUN! Keep the “fun and adventure with friends” in front of them at all times to create an insatiable desire to be a part of your pack.

Message at Join Scouting Night

When you hold your recruiting event at school, you are on familiar ground for parents and boys. Being organized, informative, enthusiastic, and fun will create for them the confidence to join and get involved.

The Scouting Adventure Begins with You!Dear Pack Membership Chair,

Thank you for volunteering for one of the most critical roles in a Cub Scout Pack. Your efforts in getting the word out about the benefits of Scouting and in welcoming new families are vital to the continuation of the Pack.

As a parent-volunteer myself, and one who has served in your role in my own son’s Pack, I know how daunting the task can seem in the beginning, particularly with many other demands on your time. Here is the good news. The Simon Kenton Council has committed to do all that it can to support you in this important work, saving you time, and helping you succeed with less stress by avoiding the need to “re-invent the wheel.” This planning guide is one aspect of that support. Some great additional recruiting resources, including step-by-step “playbooks,” are also available on the council’s website along with contact information for all staff members assigned to assist units in your district. These experts who have “been there and done that” stand ready to help.

Take us up on it! Schedule a time to meet with your District Executive in the month of April to review this planning guide and create a customized recruiting plan for your Pack. Together, you and your “DE” will create an effective plan, one that includes proven techniques and specific action items assigned to particular individuals on a definite timetable. Execution of such a plan will result in the coordinated delivery of a compelling message to every family with a Kindergartner through 5th grader in your area.

With a little planning, creativity, and enthusiasm you can ensure that the Scouting experience for boys in your area not only continues but actually grows and improves. Good luck and thank you again for all your efforts.
