A Study of Paul Cezanne

Vocabulary for this lesson

• Still life = drawing or painting on nonmoving objects.

• Horizon line = a line that is drawn horizontally onto your paper to separate either earth from sky or wall from table space (background/foreground).

• Overlap = to draw in such a way that some objects appear to be in front of or behind another.

Paul Cezanne

• He was a Post Impressionist painter who was most known for his still life paintings.

• His paintings were not “realistic” but rather Impressionistic in style, color and brushstrokes.

• He often outlined the objects in his work to help them stand out.

• He used more than one color on each piece of fruit.

Look for these things in each painting

• Horizon line• Composition• Proportion• Overlapping• Color usage• Background design
