Overview The Stratosphere Hotel is a 3-star property situated on the north end of the Las
Vegas Strip. It has over 2,400 rooms, a large casino, and an award-winning rotating
restaurant offering a 360-degree view of the city. Like many hotels located on the
Strip, Stratosphere operates a year-round high-volume hotel in a highly competitive
market.
In response to their underperforming website and an over-reliance on online travel
agencies (OTAs) for bookings, Stratosphere worked with consultant Scott Yankton
and Travel Tripper to rethink their entire online direct distribution system. Specifically,
the hotel wanted to improve its booking engine and make it easier for guests to book
directly on their website.
Travel Tripper ultimately designed a brand new booking flow for Stratosphere’s
website that allows guests to book rooms easier and faster than on their previous
website. The new booking engine also integrates specific features, many of them also
employed by OTAs, in order to optimize conversions and increase bookings.
As a result of this redesigned booking engine, Stratosphere saw significant
improvements in both their revenue and direct booking volume—all within a few
months of launch.

The Stratosphere Hotel’s previous website had been underperforming for a number of
reasons. The booking widget wasn’t integrated into the booking engine, so customers
were forced to input dates twice. Rooms, amenities, and special offers were also
scattered across different pages, requiring lots of clicking around to find important
content.
This frustrating user interface was compounded by a clunky and visually confusing
booking engine. It didn’t have any room images, and special deals and rate packages
were incredibly hard to spot. It also wasn’t obvious where customers should click to
find extra information or book rooms—an issue hampered by a small and obscurely
positioned call to action button. Combined, these limitations meant there was no
clear path to conversion.

Travel Tripper developed an entirely new booking flow for Stratosphere, modeled off
of travel e-commerce best practices used by OTAs. This new booking flow involves a
tighter integration of the Stratosphere’s website and booking engine, vastly improving
overall user experience.
The new booking engine, now called RezTrip Direct, features larger images to
showcase rooms, while a clickable TripAdvisor badge lets customers easily see reviews
without having to conduct a separate search. Rate Match, a price checking tool, also
allows customers to compare current rates with other booking sites.
Room options are also easier to compare thanks to a clear layout. Room descriptions
are summarized with concise bullet points, and the hotel’s cancellation policy and
rates are prominently displayed. As a result, customers can quickly find the most
important elements they need to inform their booking decision.
Further along the booking process, numerous urgency prompts have been added,
similar to those employed by OTAs on their site to increase conversions. These
include mentioning limited room availability, stating the number of bookings made
in the past 48 hours, and displaying crossed out prices to indicate a deal. To further
increase the likelihood of a direct booking, a prominent call to action button now
leads to a two-step booking process with a simplified checkout.

Since switching over to Travel Tripper, the Stratosphere Hotel has seen measurable
improvements to their direct booking business. Within weeks of launching RezTrip
Direct, the website started receiving higher quality traffic, leading to greatly improved
