Skills Kids Need Going Into Kindergarten

The list below shows some of the skills that kindergarteners will be developing over the year. You can help by practicing some of these together ahead of time!

That said, don't put too much pressure on your child — or on yourself. Keep in mind that this list simply includes guidelines; the exact expectations may vary from program to program.

Math Skills

• Count from 1 to 10 without skipping numbers

• Match a number to a group of five or fewer items (“I see three cats”)

• Recognize and name basic shapes (square, circle, triangle, rectangle)

• Understand more than and less than

• Arrange three objects in the right order (like from smallest to biggest)

• Name or point to the colors in a box of eight crayons
