Sustainable Development

• Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Our Common Future (The Brundtland Report), 1987

• But what does it mean for us?

The Triple Bottom Line

People Planet

Profit

The Needs of Future Generations

• How can we know what their needs will be?– We can’t actually know – but we do know that

lasting quality sells, and over time represents an efficient use of resources

– Current trends are for • smaller homes,• more compact (“urban”) development, • less emphasis on ownership; shorter tenure & rentals

• But we’re still building a lot of sprawling residential development that sells

4

What Are the Desired Outcomes?

• Connectivity / walkability• Mix of uses, mix of housing – tenure and cost• Proximity of work and home• Denser development – patterns from a time

when people walked more• Support for local food production• Protection of natural and cultural resources• Re-use of existing structures
