This handbook is designed to inform parents and students of the
rules, regulations and policies of Teays Valley West Middle School.
A thorough review of this handbook is helpful to students adjusting
to our daily routine.
In order to have organization in any group, certain policies and
procedures must be followed. This handbook does not and cannot
cover all aspects of student life. However, the intent of the handbook
is to be used as a guide. Most of the policies have been developed
over a period of years. This handbook is continually being revised.
It is important to the staff of Teays Valley West Middle School that
all students are safe and in a position to be successful. It is our goal
that this handbook serves to promote cooperation between the school
and home of each student.
In the first week of school each grade level will meet with the
principal to discuss important points and specific rules of the
handbook. We strive to make sure all students are familiar with the
rules and their questions are answered.

REPORT CARDS/INTERIMS Report cards are sent home with students every nine (9) weeks to
notify parents of their student’s progress. In addition, an interim
will be sent home to parents halfway through the grading period.
We encourage parents to be involved in your schoolwork. You
should discuss the report with your parents and teachers. Parents
are also encouraged to check Jupiter Ed for their student’s
progress. If your parents have questions regarding your school
progress, they should contact the school.
GRADING SCALE The following grading scale has been adopted by the Teays Valley
Board of Education.
95-100 A 74-76 C-
92-94 A- 71-73 D+
89-91 B+ 68-70 D
86-88 B 65-67 D-
83-85 B- 62-64 F+
80-82 C+ 61-0 F
77-79 C Semester grades for all students will be calculated by averaging the
two (2) nine-week grades. The final grade for all students will be
the average of the four (4) nine-week grades.
_GRADING SCALE POINT SYSTEM
PROMOTION POLICY In order to be promoted from one grade level to the next, each
middle school student must successfully pass all of the subjects but
one (1). All students must earn a minimum of three (3) points in
each required subject that meets daily. Point values are as follows:
A = 4 B = 3 C = 2 D = 1 F = 0
One (1) of the three (3) points must be earned in the second
semester. Any student who does not earn the required number of
points in a course will fail that course for the school year. If a
student does not earn the required one (1) point in the second
semester of a yearlong course, he/she will fail the course regardless
of the number of points earned in the first semester.
5
Those students enrolled in unified arts classes receive a ¼ credit for
passing each of the classes. In order to get a full credit, as in year-
long classes, students must pass three (3) of the four (4) classes,
earning at least one (1) point in each class. All unified arts classes
will be letter graded (A-F). Grades from these classes will also count
toward eligibility purposes.
JUPITER ED All TVWMS teachers utilize Jupiter Ed. Jupiter Ed is an online grade
book that can be accessed via the Internet. At the beginning of the
year teachers will send home instructions on how you and your
parents can access your grades in each class. Teachers can also send
important messages to parents through an email feature on Jupiter
Ed. We encourage both you and your parents to take advantage of
this tool to monitor your progress.
HOMEWORK You are responsible for completing all assignments given as
homework. Write your assignments in your agenda book to help you
remember homework and other events.
Students who fail to complete homework assignments may be subject
to the following discipline:
Verbal Warning
Deficiency report sent home
Phone call to parents
Teacher assigns a lunch detention
Students who do not put forth effort in class may be subject to
discipline under our insubordination policy for NO ACADEMIC
EFFORT.
MAKE-UP WORK If you are absent, you are responsible for contacting the teachers of
the classes you missed when you return to school. Your teacher will
help you determine the assignments you missed and what time limit
you have for completion. Students will be given every opportunity
to get work completed, however it is the student’s responsibility to
request and make up the work.
Parents may request homework for their child after he/she has been
absent at least three (3) consecutive days. Parents must request
homework by 8:30 AM in order to guarantee “same day pick-up.”
After 8:30 AM, homework will be collected the following day.
Homework collected may be picked up between 2:00-3:30 in the
office.
HONOR CLASSES Requirements for placement in an “honors class” include:
Teacher Recommendation
Standardized Test Scores
Classroom Performance/Academic Responsibility
Most recent cognitive score
Scholastic Math/Reading Inventories
HONOR ROLL The honor roll will consist of those students with all A’s and B’s and
have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students who receive a C will not be
eligible for the Honor Roll.
LONG-TERM PROJECTS Long term projects are defined as any assignment/project that is
assigned by a teacher with a due date of 3 or more weeks in the
future. The reason for grading any assignment is to determine the
student’s knowledge and skills for meeting the objectives of the
work. The original due, date set when the assignment is given,
will stand as a strict due date for completion. If the student is
absent, the assignment is still due at the school by the end of the
school day. If an emergency happens the teacher must be notified
before the end of the school day to have the situation dealt with on
an individual basis. If contact is not made, or the situation does not
meet the criteria for an extension, the assignment is due the day the
student returns to school. The assignment will be accepted with the
understanding that the student will face an office referral and will
face disciplinary actions set forth for not adhering to the due date
for a long term assignment. Disciplinary actions may include After
School Detention, Friday school, or an ISR.
NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY Membership into the NJHS is granted only to those students
selected by the Faculty Council. The council consists of five
members appointed by the principal. The council is responsible,
with input from the faculty, for selection of new NJHS members
based on an application each potential member is required to
complete. The council is responsible for issuing warnings and/or
dismissing members who do not maintain the standards of the
NJHS. When it is time to apply for NJHS please make sure the
entire activity sheet is filled out properly. Not doing so will have
an adverse effect on your chances of making the NJHS.
Students are given an activity form after the 3rd grading period of
their seventh grade year. Those selected will be members of NJHS
during their seventh and eighth grade year. Students interested in
the NJHS should keep the following in mind:
Candidates must have a cumulative scholastic average of 3.5
GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Average is based on a minimum of first
three grading periods of middle school and a maximum of
seven grading periods.
Candidates will be evaluated on the basis of scholarship,
leadership, service, character, and citizenship.
Candidates will be required to completely fill out the Student
Activity information form including all the activities in which
they have been involved.
ATTENDANCE
ATTENDANCE POLICY In order for a student to receive maximum benefit from the
instructional program at Teays Valley West Middle School, regular
attendance is necessary. Every student of compulsory school age is
required by Ohio law to attend school. Every parent/legal guardian
of a child is required by Ohio law to make sure his/her child is in
school and attends all assigned classes. Any attendance pattern
contrary to this will be investigated. Students who are excessively
absent may have truancy charges filed through Pickaway County
Courts.
Students are truant when a student is absent without a legitimate
excuse for five or more consecutive school days, seven or more
school days in one month or 12 or more school days in a school
year.
6
The following attendance regulations will be in effect:
A parent/guardian must notify the school when a student is
absent or late. Notification is to be given to the office by
telephone, written note about return, doctor or court excuse, or
parental visit on the day following the absence. To report a
student absent call 740-983-5099.
If the parent/guardian does not notify the school by 8:00 AM on
the day of absence they will receive an automated message.
Excused Absences – Up to 5 days absent per year will be
excused with parent/guardian notification/contact. Examples of
excused absences are as follows: Personal illness, death in the
immediate family, serious illness in the immediate family,
quarantine for a contagious disease, religious holiday, and
vacation, when requested by the parent and approved by the
principal. Students with excused absences will be given an
appropriate amount of time to do make-up work.
Unexcused Absences - When a student is absent from school
more than five (5) days in a school year without medical/court
documentation the absence will be unexcused. It will be left to
the discretion of the principal and teaching staff if students who
receive an unexcused absence will be permitted to make up
work.
Any student having more than five (5) days absent will be
required to provide the school with a written statement signed by
a physician, dentist or health professional, for the absence to be
considered excused. The statement must specify the reasons the
student was unable to attend, the date or dates on which he/she
was unable to attend and have the signature of the health
professional. Medical excuses will not be accepted after one
week (7) days.
A letter will be sent home reminding parents of the district’s
attendance policy and summary of ALL student’s attendance
history upon reaching 5, 10, 15, 20 days of absences. This letter
is only to serve as a reminder of this information and students
attendance history.
Students who miss 25 or more days of school will be retained
unless there are extenuating circumstances and/or medical
excuses.
If a student is absent for more than two (2) consecutive days and
the parent/guardian cannot be contacted by telephone during that
time, the school district shall notify the local police of the
student’s absence.
RELEASING CHILD TO CUSTODY/DIVORCED
PARENTS
The school wants to cooperate with the parents of our students but
we must do so according to Ohio Laws.
Sometimes parents have disagreements and make request of school
personnel regarding releasing children during the day. If custodial
arrangements, which have been court ordered, restrict access to the
child or his/her records, a copy of that order must be on file in our
office. This court-issued document directs the school, not necessarily
the wishes of one parent or the other. The adult checking the child
out must sign for the child’s release. Parents have an obligation to
inform the school any time the custody of a child changes. School
officials will need to see and copy court orders pertaining to a
child’s custody.
ABSENCES/TARDIES
TARDY TO SCHOOL - All students arriving at school after 7:38
AM and before 9:30 AM will be tardy. Tardies are only excused
when accompanied with a medical excuse. Students must sign-in at
the office, where they will be issued a pass to enter class. Parents
do not need to sign students in when they arrive tardy.
TARDY TO CLASS - You are expected to be in your seat at the
start of class. The only time a tardy will be excused is by an
authorized pass. Three (3) tardies (school or class tardies) in a
nine week period will result in an after school detention.
Tardies beyond three (3) will receive detentions, Friday
Schools and In-School-Restriction.
FULL DAY ABSENCE - Any student leaving school before 9:30
AM or arriving after 12:30 PM. AM ABSENCE - Students that arrive to school after 9:30 AM but
before 12:30 PM will be counted a half day absent.
PM ABSENCE – Any student leaving school prior to 12:30 PM
will be counted as a half day absent.
EARLY DISMISSAL – Students leaving the building after 12:30
PM.
A parent/guardian must sign students out of the office before
students are able to exit the building during the school day.
VACATIONS/EXTENDED ABSENCE Any student realizing he/she will miss three (3) consecutive days
of school or more should contact the school. Vacations are defined
as an extended absence from school with the immediate family.
Students will not be excused to vacation with a friend’s family.
Generally, students will not be excused from school for family
vacation. However, special provisions may be made if, in the
opinion of the principal, they are warranted. Vacations approved
by the principal will be excused for no more than five (5) days and
may be unexcused if student has already used 5 parental excuses.
Days missed after five (5) will be counted as unexcused absences.
Forms for vacation and extended weekends should be picked up in
the office prior to the first day of absence. These forms must be
completed and returned to the office at least 24 hours prior to the
scheduled vacation.
WITHDRAWALS If a student plans to withdraw from Teays Valley West Middle
School, a parent/guardian should contact the office giving them as
much advance notice as possible. On the day of withdrawal, you
will see the school secretary for a withdrawal form, which you will
carry to all of your classes for your teachers to sign and record
your grades. When the withdrawal card has been properly signed
and your record is clear, you will return the signed form to the
office.
7
CODE OF CONDUCT
At Teays Valley West Middle School our objective is to educate
children. In order for each child to meet the challenges that he/she
will face in our society, the development of self-discipline and
individual responsibility is essential. Teays Valley West Middle
School follows an assertive school wide discipline plan that supports
the rights of each student to an education in a calm, safe and secure
environment. Our goal is for each student to learn to be responsible
for his or her own actions.
It is important that parents, school staff and students work together to
maintain a positive educational atmosphere. The rules and discipline
procedures at Teays Valley West Middle School have been
established for the protection of students. Students are expected to
respect these rules as well as the staff and administration responsible
for enforcing these rules. The staff needs the support of parents in

other administrative intervention is necessary. Students must bring
school related materials to detention to work on and the detention
will be supervised by TVWMS staff. Parents receive written
notification of a detention and attendance is required for any student
who is assigned. Failure to attend will result in further disciplinary

Suspension (OSS). ISR will be held under the following
guidelines:

exhibited towards another particular student more than once and
the behavior both causes mental or physical harm, and is
sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an
intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for
the other student. It is the policy of the Board that any form of
bullying behavior is forbidden. Whether bullying takes place in
the classroom, on school property, to and from school, or at school

school employee or any other person.
DRESS CODE/APPEARANCE
All clothing and hairstyles must be neat, clean and styled in a way
that is not disruptive to the learning process. In situations where a
disagreement exists as to whether or not attire is appropriate, the
principal shall make the final decision. A good rule of thumb to
follow is if in doubt, do not wear it.
No student on or about school property or at any school-sponsored
activity shall wear, possess, use, distribute, or sell any clothing,
medallions or other jewelry, insignia, emblem, badge, patch, symbol,
sign, tattoo, scar or mark, hair style, or other elements which identify
a gang or which are evidence of membership or affiliation in any
gang or which otherwise disrupt the academic process.
HAIR - Hairstyles must be of a nature that they do not create a safety
hazard. Hair must be out of the eyes. This bears the same
importance as safety glasses. When a flame is used, the hair must be
confined in such a manner that there is no chance of the hair catching
fire. Extremism is unacceptable in regards to hair length, style, color,
etc.

and must cover the body from shoulders to mid-thigh.

fingertip length.
b) “Sagging” is not permitted. Pants must be worn
about the waist at all times.
EMERGENCY DRILLS
FIRE DRILLS Law requires a fire drill once a month. These drills must be kept
serious and orderly. Please move toward the exits at the first
sound of the fire alarm. There must be no stopping for books,
clothes, etc., no talking, no running or walking too rapidly and no
pushing or blocking in the line moving out of the building. A
natural walking pace will clear the building in approximately one
and half minutes, which is satisfactory. Students are to remain at
least 50 feet away from the building until the signal is given to re-
enter. Our fire drills are a part of our regular school procedure and
they must be carried out as such. These instructions are posted in
each classroom.
LOCKDOWNS Several times per year we will conduct lockdown drills. Although
we hope to never experience a real lockdown situation, we must be
prepared to act if necessary. Your teachers will review instructions
at the beginning of the year and will also post lockdown
procedures in the classroom. Students must remember to stay very
quiet and listen to directions. Safety is our number one priority.
TORNADO DRILLS Severe weather drills are held from time to time. You should
remember that these drills are a necessary precaution and you must
listen to your teacher’s directions. Although it is hoped that we
11
never experience a real tornado, a prepared student body will fare
much better if a tornado is actually experienced. During these drills:
No talking, no pushing and walk at a natural pace which will get you
to a safe spot in the building. Your safety and health are dependent
upon your following the rules of tornado safety.
GENERAL INFORMATION CHILD ABUSE REPORTS
Teays Valley West Middle School cooperates with social agencies to
help children. We have a legal obligation to report suspected child
abuse. All school employees are mandatory reporters of
suspected/reported child abuse.
FEES School fees are to be paid during the first few weeks of the school
year. Families who cannot afford to pay these fees may apply for a
financial waiver. Fees must be paid before students can participate
on field trips. These include band and choir trips. Students who
receive FREE lunch may have fees waived by completing a fee
waiver. Fees MAY NOT be waived for students on REDUCED
lunch.
LOITERING/UNAUTHORIZED AREAS A student shall not be in any unscheduled or unauthorized area of the
school building/grounds without the express permission of a member
of the school staff or administration. Students may not loiter (remain
in an area for no obvious reason, hang around, or lag behind) in any
part of the school building (i.e., restrooms, hallways, etc.) or on
school grounds. Any student arriving before or remaining after
school must be under the supervision of a teacher or coach.
MEDICATION Terri Richards, R.N., is the nurse of Teays Valley West Middle
School and will be attending to students’ medical needs. We
encourage medication to be given outside of school hours, but if this
is not possible, students are permitted to use prescribed medication
during the school day with written permission from the
parent/guardian and physician’s verification of the necessity for the
medication during school hours. All medication must be in the
original container, properly identified, and marked with the student’s
name, dosage and time interval it is to be taken. All medication is to
be kept in the office. Asthma inhalers may be carried by the student,
but written approval by the parent and the physician must be on file
at school.
Over-the-counter (OTC) medication will not be given without parent
permission and must be kept in the office in the original properly
identified container. In the event that your child needs non-
prescription medication for minor ailments, the school nurse or her
designee may dispense OTC medication with parent permission and
under the guidelines of the school physician. Parent permission will
be sought annually. Medication forms may be downloaded from the
Teays Valley website: www.tvsd.us
PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCE The most valuable time during the teacher’s busy day is when they
are face-to-face with students, so they will be unable to accept
phone calls during class time. With one (1) day notice a teacher
conference may be arranged by calling the school office. Teachers
have fifty minute prep during the school day for the purpose of
meeting parents and class preparation. Regularly scheduled
parent-teacher conference dates are listed in the school calendar.
SCHOOL CLOSINGS In case of severe weather – snow, low temperatures, ice, fog, etc.,
the official announcement for school closing maybe heard over the
local radio stations, local television stations (channel 4, 6, and 10),
and the district website at www.tvsd.us. A district wide phone call
will also be made home to parents/guardians. Students should not
call the principal, teacher, or schools for this information.
TELEPHONE
Students may NOT use their cell phone during
school hours for calling or texting. A telephone is
located in the office for students to use if an EMERGENCY may
arise. Students must be issued a pass from their teacher to go to
the office and then given approval by the secretary or principal
before using the telephone. Telephone conversations are to be kept
to a minimum. The school reserves the right to refuse the use of its
telephone for unnecessary calls.
TRANSPORTATION Riding the school bus is a privilege. Improper conduct on the bus
will result in the privilege being denied. Only regularly scheduled
bus students are to ride the school bus. If a student needs to ride
another bus or get dropped off at another location they must
provide the office with a written request from their
parent/guardian. This request must be sent to the office during first
period where a bus pass will be issued. Students are to pick-up
their “bus pass” in the cafeteria, during their lunch. Bus passes
must be given to the bus driver upon riding the bus. No phone
calls will be accepted for issuance of a bus pass, except for
emergency situations. Bus students are to go immediately to
their bus upon dismissal from school. Students must get off the
bus at their district assigned bus stop.
SIGNS/ADVERTISING Any signs that you would like to place on the outside or inside of
school property must be approved by the principal.
VENDING MACHINES Vending machines are not to be used during school hours.
VISITORS Adult Visitors – All adult visitors must first report to the office
when visiting school. This includes all parents.
Student Visitors – We do not permit visitation of other students
during school hours. The reason is that there are too many things
that can happen over which we have no control, such as injury to
the visiting student, the student becoming ill while at school and
added teacher responsibility for the student when he/she is brought
to class.
12
STUDENT
RESPONSIBILITIES
You are responsible for your own school supplies, textbooks,
notebooks, pencils, art supplies, library books, etc. You are also
responsible for your personal belongings, such as watches,
calculators, phones, money, clothing, etc. In no case should a purse
or billfold, money or other valuables ever be left unattended.
Identification should be on all articles. This applies to P.E. clothing
and shoes for all students. Please do not bring large sums of money
to school.
LITTER If we are to enjoy and have pride in our school, each of us must share
in keeping it and the surrounding area clean. Wastebaskets and trash
barrels have been placed in appropriate spots for use. Please do not
be guilty of littering on the school premises or those of our
neighbors. This is especially true of the parking lots and areas
around the school.
LOCKERS Each student will be assigned a school locker and in addition, those
students with P.E. will be assigned a P.E. locker. All lockers have a
built-in combination. Lockers are the property of the Teays Valley
Board of Education.
Guidelines for school and P.E. lockers are as follows:
Students are not permitted to share or trade lockers.
Lockers are to be kept neat and clean at all times.
No writing or stickers are to be placed on the inside or
outside of lockers.
Students are not to give their locker combination to other
students.
Students are not to PRE-SET or “RIG” lockers
If you experience trouble getting your locker open, please
report the problem to your teacher, custodian or someone in
the office. DO NOT KICK OR ABUSE YOUR LOCKER.
It is the responsibility of the student to make sure his/her
school locker and P.E. locker is locked at all times and
all items are placed in their locker.
Lockers carry no expectation of privacy for the
students who occupy them. School lockers and their
contents are subject to search by school
administrators at any time and without warning.
TEXTBOOKS All textbooks and library books are owned by the Teays Valley
School District. All textbooks are issued to students by the subject
teacher. The number and condition of the book are recorded and
the student is then responsible for the book issued. A teacher may
request that textbooks be covered with book covers to protect the
book. If a book is lost or damaged the student is required to pay
for the loss or damage.
SPECIAL EVENTS ASSEMBLIES
Assemblies will be conducted at various times during the school
year. These assemblies are special activities held during the school
day to educate, as well as foster student interest and involvement.
They are chosen to enrich units of study or to provide positive
motivational messages.
Whether guests are present or not, each student is personally
responsible for the impression made by the school as a whole.
Unacceptable conduct would include whistling, uncalled-for
clapping, boisterousness, and talking during a program. Improper
behavior may result in removal from assemblies.
Prior to a general assembly, students are to report to their
classroom. Textbooks and other materials are to be left in the
classroom. Purses and billfolds are to be taken to the assembly.
DANCES Dances are scheduled during the school year for students to
socialize in a controlled school setting. It is the school’s way of
showing appreciation for good student behavior and adherence to
the rules, regulations and attendance policies
A dance is a school event that requires the cooperation of all
attending. Students may be denied the privilege to attend the
dances due to behavioral, academic, or attendance concerns. To be
eligible to attend dances, students must NOT receive an office
discipline referral during the week of the scheduled dance or miss
more than 5 days of school during any grading period. The
Student Code of Conduct and Dress and Grooming Policies are
enforced during all school sponsored activities.
Dance Information:
Dances will generally be scheduled in the Cafetorium
from 2:45-4:15 PM.
Cost to attend a dance is $5.00.
Dances are for TVWMS students only.
Students are asked to wait in the main lobby at the
conclusion of the school day and will then be admitted to
the dance at 2:45 PM.
Students are to make arrangements prior to the school day
to attend the dance. Calls home for permission will not be
permitted.
It is expected that students are picked-up 15 minutes after
the conclusion of the dance. Failure to comply may
result in loss of privileges to attend future dances.
13
Snacks will be served at each dance. Students are
encouraged to bring extra money if they wish to purchase
items such as pizza and soda.
Chaperones are always needed at our dances. If parents
wish to volunteer, this is a great way to help.
All student code of conduct policies are enforced during the
dance. Students who act inappropriately will be brought to
the office where parents will be called and asked to come
and pick up their child.

present a doctor’s excuse.
Any student who is assigned in-school or out-of-school suspension
during the 4th nine weeks of school will not be permitted to attend.
FIELD TRIPS Field trips are an important part of the learning experience. They
provide an opportunity to extend the classroom beyond the building
and give the students the freedom to investigate and observe. Since
field trips offer a greater degree of independence, it is required that
each student accepts responsibility for his/her behavior. Students are
required to follow the established dress code on all field trips.
Students who have an office referral for discipline or academic
reasons may not be permitted to participate on field trips. Field

school and while moving from one class to another, unless they have
special permission or special duties that require them to be there. A
student must have his/her AGENDA book in order to be permitted in
the hall during class time. A staff member must initial/sign the
agenda book, with the time documented. Any abuse of pass
privileges during class time or lunch periods may result in the loss of
pass privileges for the grading period.

2. Walk in a normal manner. NO Running.
3. No jumping off steps!!
4. Keep to right.
5. Open only your own locker.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical Education is an important class and students must come
prepared. In physical education we require a student to dress and
participate. Students are required to change into dress code
appropriate shorts/sweat pants, a T-shirt or sweat shirt and tennis
shoes. Students will be assigned lockers for them to keep their
belongings. Please use these lockers and make sure your personal
belongings are locked in your lockers while you are attending class.
Students who do not dress or participate repeatedly will
complete a physical education packet to earn partial credit for
the day, or will be disciplined and their PE grade will be lowered.
STUDY HALL CONDUCT Study halls are a part of the educational day. Those who violate this
study time are not showing proper respect for others.
1. Students will have an assigned seat and must be in seat at
the beginning of period so attendance can be taken.
2. Plan properly and use time wisely. Bring homework,
books, paper, writing utensils with you to class. Students
are expected to have a book . Computer usage is limited.
3. Students are not to leave seats without permission of the
teacher in charge.
4. NO TALKING. Study halls are to be QUIET! 5. Students may not go to see another teacher without a pass
from that teacher. Passes must be obtained before class
begins.
6. Only one (1) student at a time will be given permission to
leave the room. The one exception is an emergency.
7. A percentage of students will be permitted to go to the
library on open library days.
8. Students may not work together, unless permission is
granted.
Failure to comply with these rules will result in any of the
following:
Warning, student will be moved, study hall monitor will
contact parents, office referral.
EXTRACURRICULARS Teays Valley West Middle School offers the following sports for
seventh and eighth grade students: Football, Cross Country, Golf,
Volleyball, Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, and Track.
ATHLETICS Any student who participates on our athletic teams must attend one
(1) OHSAA required meeting per school year. These meetings
will be announced in advanced and are administered by the high
school athletic director. Students must also have an updated
physical, notarized emergency medical form and other Ohio High
School Athletic Association forms prior to the start of official
practices. Students must also be academically eligible to
participate on our athletic teams.
ELIGIBILITLY POLICY FOR STUDENTS All rules and regulations governing the academic eligibility of
athletes as dictated by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Academic requirements will be strictly enforced. In order for a
student to be eligible to participate in any school-sponsored
extracurricular activity, he/she must meet the following standards
of academic proficiency:
1. You must be currently enrolled in school and have
received passing grades in the immediately preceding
grading period in 75% of the subjects in which enrolled.
2. Student academic performance will be monitored and
assessed on a 4 ½-week basis corresponding with interim
grade reports. Students must be passing 5 classes.
Students must maintain a local grade point average of 1.5.
and no more than one (1) grade of “F” to be eligible to
participate in extracurricular activities. Any student
receiving two (2) grades of “F” will be ineligible
regardless of GPA.
3. An ineligible student will not be allowed to participate in
any contest or performance while under academic
suspension, but he/she will be allowed to practice
provided the student attends a staff-monitored study table
each day. (One (1) study table for one (1) practice.)
4. The ineligible status begins on the first Monday following
the completion of the interim grade reports and will
16
remain in effect until grade cards are issued and verified by
the athletic director or principal.
5. Academic ineligibility will carry over from one sport or
activity to another during the transition from season to
season. Student athletes will be able to participate in team
tryouts without academic penalties.
6. Participation on non-OHSAA sponsored teams during your
school team’s season may result in losing your eligibility.
This policy pertains to all student activities, which meet on a
regular basis and are recognized by the Teays Valley Board
of Education. These activities include all voluntary,
ungraded, regularly scheduled events that occur before or
after the normal school hours. Check with your Athletic
Director.
7. Students who are eligible under the Ohio High School
Athletic Association rules at the conclusion of the school
year are eligible to participate the following interim period
of the new academic year.
8. A student must attend a full day of school following an
athletic contest that occurs during the week. Failing to do
so will result in not being permitted to play in the next
contest.
CYBER IMAGE POLICY FOR ATHELTES Any identifiable image, photo or video which implicates a student
who participates in our athletic program to have been in possession
of or in the presence of drugs or portrays actual use, or out of
character behavior or crime, shall be a confirmation of a violation of
our code. Since there is no way to establish a time frame for when or
location for where the image was taken, it shall be a responsibility
that the student must assume. It must also be noted that there may be
persons who would attempt to implicate an athlete by taking such
images to place them in a situation where they might be in violation
of this code. This is our rationale for asking that our student-
athletes not put themselves in such environments.
SPORTSMANSHIP Extracurricular activities are privileges as well as part of the total
educational process and the same level of responsibility and behavior
is expected at practices and competitions as is expected in the
classroom. Should an individual student act in a manner detrimental
to the school and student body at any extra/co-curricular activity,
either as a contestant or a fan, he/she will lose the right to attend
contests and events involving other students and schools and may be
subject to further disciplinary action.
Teays Valley West Middle School students are to sit on the home
team side of the stadium or gymnasium. Students who leave the
gymnasium, field area or school building will NOT be permitted to
re-enter.
PAY TO PARTICIPATE POLICY
TEAYS VALLEY LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
ATHLETIC PARTICIPATION FEE GUIDLINES
The intent of this plan is to help defray the costs to the Board of
Education to offer our athletic programs. Each sport team may have
additional costs that are required of the student.
The fee for students in grades 7-12 choosing to participate in our
athletic programs is $50 per sport. There is a $300 family maximum.
Families who are eligible for free and reduce lunches may have their
fees waived provided appropriate documentation is on file in the
required school office. Free and reduced lunch forms may be
obtained in the respective school offices or board of education
office.
The participation fee, or fee waiver form, must be paid or filled out
prior to the start of the team’s competitive season. (Competitive
season is defined as the first scheduled contest that counts in a
won/loss record.) All fees will be
paid through the Athletic Director’s office. Coaches are not to be
involved in the collection process.
If you are applying for a fee waiver through Free and Reduced
Lunches, the application must be turned in prior to the start of the
season. Applications for Free and Reduced lunches are available
in each school’s office. Once the application is completed it is to
be returned to the building principal. Should the family’s request
be denied, fees must be paid within one week of notification.
Paying the participation fee does not:
A. guarantee playing time at any level;
B. result in control over any of the conditions of the
team or activity;
C. alter policies of the Teays Valley Board of Education,
Mid-State League or Ohio High School Athletic
Association;
D. alter or effect the athletic code and/or individual team
rules as enforced by the coach.
The fee is non-refundable except in cases where the student
becomes physically unfit to perform as designated by a physician
before the competition season starts. There is no refund if the
student quits the team, is removed from the team or becomes
ineligible to participate as a result of an athletic code violation.
WHAT DO YOU DO IF…
You are tardy to school in the morning or late to school during the
day – Report to the office and obtain a pass to class.
You know you need to be absent for an extended period of
time………. Have parents clear needed absences with the building
administrator as early as possible. Request a vacation form,
complete and return to the office before you leaving on vacation.
You become ill or need to leave the building during the school
day………. Report to the office; permission must be obtained from
parents before leaving. Those students leaving for appointments
must have a note signed by parents and turned in to the office the
first thing in the morning before school starts. When you leave the
building, your parents must sign you out in the office.
You are injured at school………. Seek a staff member for
assistance or report to the office. Be sure an accident report is
filled out.
You need to see the school counselor………. Go to the guidance
counselor and make an appointment before school, at lunch, after
school, or during study hall. Should an emergency occur that
necessitates you seeing the counselor immediately, report to the
office and request to see the counselor.
You lose a textbook………. Report the loss to the teacher of that
subject. The fee for the lost book will need to be paid promptly. If
the book is found in good condition, no charges will be made.
17
You lose personal property………. Check first with lost and found
located on the stage in the cafeteria. If item is not located there,
report the loss to the principal, immediately.
You cannot get your locker open – Report to the office as soon as
possible. Do not kick or abuse lockers.
You want to invite a friend to visit school – DO NOT DO IT! We do
not allow student visitors.
You are detained by a teacher or administrator – Obtain a pass to
admit you to your next class.
You are suspended – You are not allowed on school property or to
attend school activities.
