The development of the port on Holmen in the last 50 years has reduced the need for

comprehensive

changes and new installations on the Strømsø side. It has thus been possible to take

care of

valuable parts of this historic port area. A few central buildings have recently been

restored, with

emphasis on the preservation of old facades and valuable architectural features. For

future

commercial use of the area it will be important to define the cultural monuments in the

area, so that

guidelines can be laid down for business activity that preserves the cultural monuments

and their

character.

and still is playing in the community and region

Har dere hørt uttrykket oppgangssag før? Ei oppgangssag er ei vanndrevet sag som sager

opp tømmerstokker til planker, bord og annen trelast. Første oppgangssag i

Drammensdistriktet kom i 1528. Saga førte til sterk økning i produksjon og økte

muligheten for eksport av trelast. Etter hvert ble det etablert sagbruk oppover langs

Drammenselva.

I hvilket år tror dere det ble slutt på å bruke vannveien for å frakte tømmer? I Drammen

ble det slutt på fløting av tømmer i 1969, men for eksempel i Skiensvassdraget pågikk

dette helt frem til 2005. I dag fraktes mesteparten av tømmeret på tømmerbiler.
