Thanks to you
Supporter Review 2013/2014
Welcome to our second Supporter Review. If you’re reading this, it’s because you have kindly volunteered or supported us. So firstly, we’d like to say a very big thank you.
What a spectacular twelve months it has been! We celebrated our 70th birthday in style, expanded our services into even more communities and were able to help more people than ever before. We couldn’t have done any of it without your support. The breadth of our research increased, with projects across eleven institutions, looking at improving the ways cancer is diagnosed and treated, as well as how we can support people living with cancer today.
Thanks to your hard work, commitment and generosity, last year we raised over £9 million to help support cancer patients and their families. We wouldn’t have been able to achieve this without you. Each and every bake sale, abseil, lottery ticket, donation or Christmas card has helped us make a real difference. We simply couldn’t have done it without you.
Thank you
Dear Supporter,Our thanks to you

Supporter Review 2013/2014
When you have five kids, family life is busy and going through chemo meant I had to slow down and take it easy. I found this really hard, especially when so many people rely on me.
I was really lucky to have all of my treatment on Tenovus’ Mobile Cancer Support Unit. Parking was a dream compared to the hospital and the atmosphere on board was so friendly. It was lovely to see the same staff and you get to know each other so you really feel like they’ve been on the journey with you.
Having so few patients at a time, meant that I never had to wait long. Whether it was advice, a cup of tea or just a chat, I knew they were there if I was worried about anything and it all helped make my treatment much more bearable.
Nothing can make cancer and chemotherapy easy to cope with, but Tenovus helped make life miles better for me and my family.
Thank you so much
Thanks to you, we’ve been able to change people’s lives

Supporter Review 2013/2014
Every year we spend around £1 million funding the researchers of tomorrow who are looking for a cure, as well as those who are trying to find the best ways we can care for and support people affected by cancer today.
This year we celebrated our history of cancer research and the thousands of people it has meant we can treat, help and support. We now fund 25 PhD students across Wales who are looking at cancer prevention as well as how cancer is diagnosed and treated. Their projects focus on a range of cancers including breast, prostate, bowel and liver.
Tim lost his mum to breast cancer when he was a child, which has helped drive him to want to understand cancer better and improve how it’s treated.
Thanks to your generosity, we can fund this vital research, which helps people living with cancer today and gives hope for the future.
we fund research that gives hope for the future
Meet Tim, one of our PhD students.
Tim’s project looks at how prostate cancer can be better diagnosed and understood, as well as preventing recurrence.
Thanks to you,

Supporter Review 2013/2014
we’re here 365 days a year for anyone worried about cancer
Our Freephone Cancer Support Line is open 8am – 8pm, 7 days a week, so by 8am I’m in the office, at my desk with a cuppa, ready to take calls. Many of the people I speak to are worried about their diagnosis, the side effects of their treatment or want to know what their treatment will include. It’s surprising how a short conversation can make someone feel much better.
We also take a lot of calls from people who are concerned about a family member or friend with cancer and want to know more about it, what to expect, as well as how Tenovus can help them.
Quite often when someone is worried about a loved one, they completely forget about themselves. After we chat and work through their questions, I make sure I ask how they’re doing. I remind them that at Tenovus, we’re here for anyone affected by cancer. If someone wants to talk about their feelings with someone outside their family and friends, we’re here.
At 5pm I hand the Support Line over to a colleague who’ll be there to answer calls until 8pm. You’d be surprised how many people phone outside normal office hours. Luckily, thanks to you, we’re open 365 days a year, ready to listen.
Meet Jane, one of our Cancer Support Nurses.

We’re so grateful to you and all our supporters for your amazing efforts this year. From raffle tickets, to running; bucket collections to bike rides.
We help Tenovus because of our need to support those living with cancer. For hope given by research and innovative ways to deliver treatment. For the joy people get from wonderful support groups like the choirs and for the pleasure gained in the community from our fundraising events.
Need, hope, joy and pleasure;all good reasons to be part of Tenovus.
Betty Fitzgerald Secretary of Radyr Friendsof Tenovus group
I was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2000 and Tenovus were there for me then. They’re so much more than a cancer charity though; they are a wonderful group of people doing a wonderful job. Thankfully fourteen years later I still benefit from being involved and now fundraise for Tenovus. It gives me a great amount of satisfaction to be able to give
something back. It’s wonderful to know my fundraising means that Tenovus can be there to help someone elsegoing through a frightening time, just as Idid, fourteen years ago.
Mike Evans, Tenovus fundraiser, Bridgend
and all our amazing supporters! Thanks to you,

Supporter Review 2013/2014
We all worry about what will happen to our loved ones after we’re gone, and writing a Will is one of the best ways to look after them.
But did you know, leaving a gift in your Will is also one of the most powerful ways you can support Tenovus? A gift to Tenovus in your Will means you’re not only taking care of your loved ones, but helping to improve and even save the lives of millions of cancer patients, for many years to come.
By choosing to leave a gift to Tenovus and supporting our ongoing work, you could fund vital research into better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. You could also help us improve cancer services in your own community, so that everyone has access to the advice, support and care they need.
We are hugely grateful to anyone who supports us, however they choose to do so; but gifts left in Wills mean we can continue our vital work as well as helping us plan for the future.
As a thank you to our supporters, we’ll be running a number of ‘Free Wills’ campaigns over the next few months, offering those who are over 50 a free ‘simple’ Will, through local participating solicitors. Whilst there’s no obligation to leave a gift to Tenovus, we sincerely hope that you will be able to.
If you’d like to find out more about our Free Wills Campaign please call our Legacy Officer for a confidential chat on 029 2076 8859.

we’ve been able to change people’s lives.
Meet Marcia, a volunteer in our Maesteg shop. In early 2013, Marcia’s mother-in-law was diagnosed with terminal cancer which came as a huge shock to the whole family. Marcia was helping to care for her when a nurse at the local hospital suggested she call our Freephone Cancer Support Line.
When a member of your family is diagnosed with cancer you feel lost and helpless. That’s when you’re glad Tenovus are there for you, at the end of the phone. It was such a difficult time and after my mother-in-law passed away,
I decided that I wanted to give something back to thecharity. I started to volunteer with Tenovus in June 2013and I haven’t looked back.
Thank you so much
Thanks to you,

£10 could help keep our Freephone Cancer Support Line open 7 days a week. We’re there to listen when someone is worried about cancer, ready to support them and their loved ones.
£40 could help pay for counselling sessions so someone with cancer always has someone to talk to. We can provide this face to face, by phone or by Skype.
£100 could help keep our Mobile Cancer Support Units on the road so we can bring treatment closer to people’s homes, saving them stressful and costly journeys to and from hospital.
£150 could help fund a PhD student so we can continue our research into the best ways to diagnose and treat cancer, as well as making it more bearable for patients and the people who love them.
