Thank you!First of all, we’d like to say a huge thank you for all your support in 2011/2012.

This year, thanks to your generosity, energy and support, we have been able to help even more children and young people with cancer. Here are just a couple of examples of how you have helped us:

In March 2012, we launched our Northern Ireland Appeal in conjunction with the 2012 Cash for Kids Day. Our goal is to raise £3.7m to build two new Homes from Home in Belfast, and thanks to the support of people from all over Northern Ireland we raised an amazing £125,000.

We were also delighted in November 2011 to host our first ‘Sportsman’s Lunch’ in which 100 sport fans joined CLIC Sargent Patron Barry McGuigan and football manager Martin O’Neill for a fantastic day at Belfast’s Europa Hotel. The event raised over £9,000.

“It was great to donate to something that will help our children and young people in Northern Ireland.”

Shirley, Cash for Kids Day donor

It has been a wonderful year, but we still need your support. If you’d like to help us further, whether it’s fundraising for our Northern Ireland Appeal, running, trekking or organising your own event, please go to www.clicsargent.org.uk/getinvolved for details.

WelcomeA message from Daphne Pullen, Chair of Trustees, and Lorraine Clifton, Chief Executive

Hello and welcome to this year’s Supporter Review. If you’re reading this, it’s almost certainly because you have volunteered or supported us in some way so before anything else, we’d like to say thank you.

Thanks to your fantastic commitment, we are delighted to say that our income last year was £21.24 million.

The year has been tremendously exciting for CLIC Sargent. From influencing government reforms to providing emotional, practical and financial support, we have continued to do all we can to improve the lives of children and young people with cancer.

We have also continued to develop and improve our vital services. In particular, we have increased the support we are able to offer young people, as well as to bereaved parents and families who have lost a child or young person to cancer.

None of this would be possible without you, our wonderful supporters. We thank you all.

However, at the moment we can only help two out of three children and young people with cancer. We want to reach each and every one of them. But we can only do this with your continued support. Whatever way you choose, be it through volunteering, donating, taking part in an event or helping us in other equally valuable ways, please continue to support us and play a part in helping us reach that goal. Thank you.

A Day in the Life of Ken, a CLIC Sargent NurseKen has worked at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children as a CLIC Sargent Nurse since November 2010.His role is to help children and young people with cancer, and their families, through treatment.

“When a child is diagnosed with cancer,” says Ken, “I aim to meet the family while they are in hospital

and let them know about the nursing and social work support CLIC Sargent provides.”

An important part of Ken’s daily work involves helping children and their families with some of the necessary medical procedures involved in treating cancer such as blood tests and even chemotherapy. This means that instead of having

to travel to hospital, which can often be many miles away, children can spend much more time at

home with their families. Many parents particularly appreciate this, as by taking responsibility for some of these

duties, they can regain a sense of control and purpose at a time when they often feel frustrated and powerless.

Ken’s time is often spent providing emotional support. As an example, Ken might also visit a child’s school to explain to teachers and classmates what their friend is going through. At other times, Ken will also spend time with the families of children with terminal cancer to help them through this unimaginably difficult time.

Without people like you and your fantastic support, we wouldn’t be able to provide nurses like Ken who make such a difference to so many families’ lives. Thank you.

Thomas’ storyThomas is eight years old and lives near Caerphilly in Wales. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour when he was just four and in addition to 18 months of chemotherapy, he needed brain surgery three times. Thomas is no longer in treatment, but still needs regular scans.

Louise, Thomas’ mother, said:

“We met Jane, our CLIC Sargent Specialist Nurse Key Worker, as soon as Thomas was diagnosed. She’s a fantastic nurse. When your child is diagnosed with cancer it’s scary, and you sometimes want to pretend that everything will be better, but Jane keeps you focused on reality and helps you through it. She’s approachable, knowledgeable and brilliant with Thomas.

As well as coming to our house to give chemotherapy to Thomas, Jane has been great at coordinating everything we need as a family, and has helped us to access support from other charities as well as CLIC Sargent.

After treatment ends you have to adjust to living with a child who has experienced cancer. That’s where Jane has been invaluable. Thomas doesn’t need a doctor, but we still need support, so rather than go to the GP it’s great to have Jane, who knows his history and completely understands what we need.

Jane is always on the end of the phone, and although she’s got other families to support, she’s always got time for us. We really value and appreciate her,

and as a teaching professional myself I completely respect her – she’s so unflappable.”

Jane is just one of the specialist nurses that we have been able to provide, thanks to you and

your tremendous support. Whatever you can do to make sure we can help more families like Thomas’, we would be hugely grateful.

“When your child is diagnosed with cancer it’s scary, but Jane keeps you focused on reality and helps you through it.”

How we helpOur hope for the future is that every child and young person with cancer can live their life to the full.Every day, 10 children and young people hear the devastating news that they have cancer. Treatment normally starts straight away but this can often take place far from home and can last for as long as three years.

Although eight in 10 will survive cancer, it is still the leading cause of death from a single disease among children and young people in the UK.

Every child or young person with cancer is different and consequently will have a different experience. At CLIC Sargent we know that people’s reactions to a cancer diagnosis can vary considerably, so we take time to listen and understand. Our aim is to help ensure that the whole family receives the support which works best for them.

Around 3,600 children and young people aged between 0 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer in the UK every year:

44% are aged 0 to 15 years

14% are aged 16 to 18 years

42% are aged 19 to 24 years.

We provide: Clinical, practical and emotional support

Financial support, including grants and benefits information

Free accommodation at our Homes from Home – close to specialist hospitals

Free breaks so that families can spend time together away from the everyday challenges of childhood cancer

A wide range of valuable information on childhood cancer and its impact for children, young people and their families.

We have over 200 care professionals including nurses, social workers, play specialists and other staff who all provide support to children and young people with cancer.

We also campaign and influence others to improve the support children and young people with cancer, and their families, receive.

We can only do this thanks to your help and generosity.

How we supported children, young people and their families in 2011/12 This chart shows the percentage of our total direct charitable expenditure that was used to support children and young people with cancer, and their families, during 2011/12 by:

Reducing the practical and financial impact of cancer treatment on a child, or young person, and their family

Supporting the emotional wellbeing and resilience of children, young people and their families

Maximising the time that children and young people can spend safely at home during treatment

Maximising children and young people’s potential by enabling them to access education, training and employment opportunities.

This includes the clinical, practical and emotional support provided by our health and social care professionals, our Homes from Home service, the holidays and short breaks and financial support we provide. It also covers the valuable information we provide on childhood cancer and its impact and our work to campaign and influence others to improve the support children and young people with cancer receive.

Ross’ storyYou may remember that we told you about four-year-old Ross in our April newsletter. Ross, from East Lothian, was diagnosed with rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer of the soft tissue, around his eye when he was 18 months old.

Since then, he and his family have received continual support from CLIC Sargent. “Our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Julie, introduced herself to us on the day we received Ross’ test results,” says Ross’ mother Lesley. “We were shocked and confused but she gave us some information to take away and read. Julie would come to appointments with consultants and explain anything we didn’t understand afterwards.

I took 10 months off work, and received sick pay for the first six months. We received a CLIC Sargent grant which was a huge help. Parking cost us £10 per day, and when you’re at the hospital so regularly it really adds up. Julie also helped us fill out forms for Disability Living Allowance, which was essential for us because Ross’ dad, Andy, also took three months off.

Our CLIC Sargent Nurse, Daphne, would come to the house and take bloods, which meant we didn’t have to make the hour and a half round trip to the hospital for a 15 minute appointment.

Ross is doing well now and we even arranged a holiday at Malcolm Sargent House in April, which was absolutely brilliant. The staff at the house are so helpful and it was great to spend some time together as a family. The beach is a very short walk from the house. It was such a relaxing and well-needed break.”

Thank you for supporting Ross and his family. Every day your support means we can help many more families like theirs who are facing childhood cancer. We can only do this thanks to your ongoing help. Please consider making a donation today. Thank you.

J D Wetherspoon smash their £1 million a year target!A huge thank you to our longstanding corporate partner J D Wetherspoon, whose customers and staff raised £1.4 million for CLIC Sargent during 2011/12. We are delighted to have been in partnership with J D Wetherspoon for 10 years and are soon to be celebrating a partnership total of £6 million!

CLIC Sargent runners hurtle past the finishing lineIn 2011/2012, the CLIC Sargent running team had a bumper year, raising £1.4 million and beating our £1.1 million target through events like the 2012 Virgin London Marathon and the Bristol Half Marathon.

Cupcake Ladies raise over £7,000 for CLIC SargentWhen Shauna Hayes’ niece Rebecca was diagnosed with cancer and tragically died, Shauna wanted to do something to remember her and to thank CLIC Sargent for the support we had given to her family. With friends she formed the ‘Cupcake Ladies’ and set out on CLIC Sargent’s epic London to Paris Cycle Challenge in 2011. They raised over £7,000 and have since become stars of newsletter and newspaper features.

Anais’ Story17-year-old Anais, from London, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in March 2010 and received radiotherapy treatment. Anais and her family received support from CLIC Sargent.

“I met my CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Urvashi, just after I was diagnosed,” said Anais.

“She has been brilliant. If I ever felt worried or confused about my treatment or how I was feeling, I could go to her and she would give me lots of advice and support.”

Juliette, Anais’ mum, said:

“Urvashi really takes time to listen to how you feel and she’s always there when we have questions about Anais’ treatment. She also helped us to apply for Disability Living Allowance as I had to leave work and had no income. That really helped and I was so grateful to her for helping us to fill out those complicated forms. She helped us apply for a CLIC Sargent grant, which we put towards paying for things like a laptop to help Anais stay connected with her friends. Without that, Anais would have felt even more isolated.

Urvashi really helped the whole family stay on track and feel supported throughout Anais’ treatment. She still keeps in touch now so I want to say a huge thank you.”

Urvashi is just one of the health and social care professionals your donations have helped us fund and who make such a difference to thousands of children and young people’s lives. Thank you.

“If I ever felt worried or confused, my CLIC Sargent Social Worker, Urvashi, would give me lots of advice and support.”

Our future plansOver the next year, we plan to further develop and improve our services and reach more children and young people with cancer.

In these tough financial times, the planned changes to the benefits system could make life even more difficult for young people and their families, and we hope to do all we can to make sure that they are affected as little as possible.

We plan to raise more funds and ensure we continue to use every penny as wisely as possible.

We will improve the ways we support those who need us. Everything we are doing, and plan to do over the coming year, will be part of our long-term ambition to reach each and every child and young person with cancer who needs us.

Our priorities

To continue improving our services

To make sure we can reach more of the children and young people who need us with our vital services

To raise more funds to help us achieve these ambitions

To offer more help to 16 to 24-year-olds, as we know there are gaps in the support available to them

To produce more information to help children and young people with cancer, and their families, cope with the impact of cancer on their lives.

Homes from Home – helping families stay closer together during treatmentFor many children and young people with cancer, the only way they can receive treatment is often at hospitals many miles from home. Treatment can last up to three years and during this time parents often have to spend nights on the ward or in a local hotel, while the other parent cares for siblings at home. Either that or families have to make long, tiring and expensive trips to hospital.

We understand how important it is for parents to be close to their child during treatment. That’s why, thanks to supporters like you, we provide eight special Homes from Home providing free self-catering accommodation in seven cities close to children’s cancer treatment centres. Through our Northern Ireland Appeal, we also hope to build two new Homes from Home in Belfast.

By being close by, families can be there to support each other and regain a much-needed sense of normality.

We can only provide these homes thanks to the generosity of people like you. Find out more at www.clicsargent.org.uk/upliftingtimes

“It was a 40-mile round trip from home to the hospital. It was fantastic to be able to stay at CLIC Haven during this time. The Home from Home is directly behind the hospital. It was kitted out completely like a home and was a really comfortable place to stay”

“Our lives changed forever when Sascha was diagnosed with leukaemia. We have had to find strength we never knew we had.”

Nicky, Sascha’s mum

Sascha’s storyFive-year-old Sascha, from Portaferry in Northern Ireland, was diagnosed with leukaemia in February 2011. She was treated at Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital, 30 miles from her home.

“When we first heard that Sascha had leukaemia”, said Sascha’s mother, Nicky, “I don’t know how I coped. I just knew I had to get on with it and didn’t want Sascha to see me upset. When we went to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for an emergency transfusion, Sascha was terrified.

Naomi, our CLIC Sargent Play Specialist, was amazing. She made up rhymes and stories so that Sascha could understand what she needed to do, and used toys to explain the hospital equipment. This really helped Sascha face the things she was afraid of.

Both my husband and I had to take time off work and you start to worry about how to cope with practical things like paying your bills and mortgage. Bridget, our CLIC Sargent Social Worker, seemed to know exactly what we needed. She told us about financial grants and the help that was available to us. It was a

massive relief.

Our lives changed forever when Sascha was diagnosed with leukaemia. We have had to

find strength and coping skills we never knew we had to face each challenge. We could not have done this without Bridget and Naomi.”

We can only provide social workers and play specialists like Naomi and Bridget thanks to your amazing support.

Please help us make sure we can continue to help more children like Sascha.

“One of the main attractions of the 70 Wild Miles event is that it is not only very physically demanding, but it is also a tough mental challenge. It was a chance to push ourselves to our limits and at the same raise money for a charity that does excellent work for children and young people with cancer.”

Conor, 70 Wild Miles participant

“CLIC Sargent not only looks after the child with cancer but also the parents and siblings and I think that’s a really important and noble thing to do. I volunteer because it’s my way at hitting back at a disease that sometimes hits that most innocent part of our society namely children, and in my book we all should do something to fight for those children and their families.”

Max, Lisburn
