Some Definitions and an Outline

• Agile• Leader• Know Yourself• Know Your People• Employ the Art and Science of Intelligence

Know Yourself

• Personal mastery…Self-Awareness…and ask and inventory the following:

• What are my strengths?• How do I perform? • What are my values?• What characteristics should I develop and

work on?

Know Your People

So what do we have to work with? Who are our future team members and employees?

They are….

• Pew Research Center results

• Council on Foreign Relations Report

• Rothkopf’s observations

Know Your People, and Develop, Communicate and Demand…

• Character and Integrity• Candor• Vision• Mission• The key intelligence questions• A strategy

You Need to Develop an Intelligence Skill Set

• What is Intelligence and why do leaders need it?

• Anticipate change and reduce surprise• Oh no!!

– Motorola, Nokia and Apple– Blockbuster and Netflix– Traditional publishing and Amazon– Newspapers, TV…social media– Traditional Higher Ed and MOOCs

The Problem of Too Much Information

• Volume• Velocity • Variety

Variety Statistics and Prevalence

• As of September, 2012 Facebook had over 1.01 billion people using the site each month, and 604 million people used Facebook monthly on a mobile device

• In July 2012, Twitter exceeded 500 million users globally with Tweets written in 25 languages, and with Arabic showing the largest percentage increase

• YouTube is also widely accessed, with over four billion hits occurring per day

But We Can Use It To Our Advantage

• Keyword searches and bing.com/social• twitter.com/search-advanced to search for a

desired location and users within that vicinity

• Use tweet.grader.com/go/tweetingsince to find out how long the user has been active

• Can also use peerindex.com to determine the credibility of retweeted sources.

Using Social Media to Collect Intell

• Key nodes within that group can be determined using NodeXL, a software plug-in for Microsoft Excel that allows users to create social network analysis (SNA) charts of any accessible Twitter account

• The plug-in can be downloaded at nodexl.codeplex.com and a full tutorial is located at http://goo.gl/h4O44.

Using Social Media to Collect Intell

And Another Step

• Twitalyzer can be used to retrieve various trends and patterns within a source’s Twitter account. Enter the source’s name into twitalyzer.com and to retrieve personal information such as:– location coordinates, occupation, expertise,

percentage of males/females in their network, average age of followers, users the source has engaged with recently, other users that have recently mentioned or retweeted their posts, and recently discussed topics.

A Metrics Dashboard

And Another Way to Leverage Intell

• Everyone a “sensor”• Recruiting Efforts and Methods• Scouting Methods and Efforts• How do you collate and make sense of this

information?• How is travel, meeting, and game reporting

captured and disseminated?• Must build sensor and reporting culture• Chief sensor is the coach and leader

And Another Way to Leverage Intell

• A system of interpretation and review to quickly and correctly assess the new situations

• GE’s Workout Sessions• The Army’s After Action Reviews

Bottom Line

• Agile Leader = Know Yourself, Know Your People, Instill Candor and Integrity, Leverage Intelligence
