At the end of the First World War a floating mass of Armenian survivors of

unprecedented, ruthless and most barberic massacres prepatrated by the Turks

found themselves struezling for rehabilitation in parts of their historical

ancestra lands.

This catalistic operation hai hardly mathered momentum when, before the in-

different eves of the Great Western Powers, it was interrupted by further

Turkish attempts for the suppression of the Armenian race.

Once acain these human wrecks faced the challenge of survival in the face of

innumerable difficulties, by mass migrating towards the neighbouring hospi-table Arab countries.

On arriva to destination their priorities were basic. It was to have a roof| on their heads. To this end every piece of discarded tin, wood or corrugated|

tron was collected and with astonishing skill and ingenuity used as buildingmaterial, with the result that a refuge was assured against the rigors of the

approachine winter, principally in the desolate Aleppo district of Suleimanieh.

1 It was under these abpalling conditions of utter poverty, undescribable miseryand lack of basic sanitation that the struzele for life started in the 1920's

‘ for these Armenians, lastine till the mid-thirties.

Eowever, despite the aloom and adversities encountered daily, these expatriatesfrom the interior once Armenian provinces as well as from Aintab, Marash and

Fillis faced their task with fortitude and determination to prepare a betterfuture through sheer hard work and industry for the coming generations.

Durine that eritical period a man, Vartan Derounian, a leading and accomplishedprofessional photorrapher in Alenno, had the visionary insight to record for

posterity the plirht of these refugees in their primitive homes. Be-fore leaving Aleppo in 1947 he left this remarkable collection of photographsto Mr, Aveis Shahinian who had taken over the succession of the business and

who, in his turn handed over to us before leaving for South America.

Sad as it may be, housed confortably in modern appartments equipped with everyconvenience, the new generations are oblivious of the swcrifices made by their

grandparents. This valuable collection of photo@rraphs will remain an indelibleevidence of tha price their ancestors paid for the well bein@ of generationsto follow.
