COURTESY OF CAL STATE BAKERSFIELDor the third year in a row,Dos Pueblos High Schoolof Goleta won the KernCounty Regional ScienceBowl at California State
University, Bakersfield. Secondplace went to Stockdale HighSchool and third place went toCentennial High School, both inBakersfield.
The Dos Pueblos team will nowadvance to the National ScienceBowl sponsored by the U.S.Department of Energy in Wash-ington, D.C., April 28-May 2.
The speedy final round includ-ed many buzzes by the competi-tors before moderator MilesMuzio, meteorologist for KBAK-29Eyewitness News, finished givingthe multiple choice answers.
“I’m always impressed by thelevel of knowledge of the studentshere,” Muzio said during theawards ceremony. “Congratula-tions to all.”
This year marks the 14th yearthe Science Bowl has been hostedby CSUB, and the 19th year KernCounty has hosted the regionalcompetition.
The event featured 150 studentsfrom 15 high schools competingin a question-answer quiz formatthat covers biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computerscience, Earth science and astron-omy.
The event is sponsored by Occi-dental of Elk Hills and Aera Ener-gy.
Dos Pueblos team captain IlanGoodman said the students put alot of energy into preparing for thecompetition.
“We’ve been practicing all year.We have meetings every week andmore than once a week since NewYears. We mostly do practice ques-tions and read textbooks on sub-jects we haven’t had classes on,”he said.
The final question of the daywas: “What oceanic plate sits westof the South American Plate, forming a convergent boundary?”The answer, given correctly by theDos Pueblos team, was the NazcaPlate.
Thomas Meyer, CSUB professorof physics and computer scienceand coordinator of the event, saidhe was pleased by the goodsportsmanship of all the studentsin today’s competition.
“They’re amazing,” he said.“That’s why we do it. These aresuch fantastic kids. Every time Iparticipate in this, I think, ‘Thefuture of America is in good hands— scientifically speaking, that is.’”

ee whiz! Seems like a month ofSundays since the last columnwas contrived. Let’s see, basedon an average month, you getabout four Sundays so you
divide a month by four and times it by 30,and there you have it. Yep,forty-three days ... with “seems” being thekey word in the paragraph.
Lots of good local sporting events hap-pening this time of year. High school bas-ketball and soccer playoffs ramping up,high school wrestling championships upfor grabs, CSUB baseball once again deliv-ering its pitch to the community, the Con-dors scrapping hard, BC baseball andsoftball, etc. Now that the weather is start-ing to break a bit, treat yourself to somelocal sporting fare to support our athletesand to perhaps jumpstart your personalfitness campaign as March approaches.
When I was growing up (still am!), mybuddies and I seamlessly went from foot-ball to basketball to baseball while in highschool. Why? Because there wasn’t much
else going on to bide our time. Rarely doyou see three-sport athletes these days.
It’s a sign of thetimes that the elec-tronic age has gar-nered its share ofthe attention ofstudents — andperhaps inhibitedsome from moreinvolvement inschool athletics.Strictly my percep-tion. I know thatthere are kids play-ing multiple sportsand I would like torecognize one stu-dent from FrontierHigh. Her name isTavia Rutherford. Ido not know Tavia
personally. I do know that Tavia is a three-sport athlete and I shall add “star” as well.Tavia played on the golf team, will com-
pete on the softball team and is one of thetop soccer goalies in Kern County for thenumber-one ranked Division II Titans.Thank you for bearing the torch for multi-ple-sport athletes, Tavia. You are certainlyan inspiration.
Well, looks like NASCAR has a new “TheKid” moniker to banter around now that20-year-old Trevor Bayne broke throughat the Daytona 500 for his first win. A neo-phyte to be sure, Bayne was hoping for alittle experience at Daytona Beach — andgot a whole lot more than he bargainedfor. The circuit was in need of this type ofinfusion as attendance waned in 2010,such to the point of threatening its eco-nomical future. Nice to see a fresh face inthe winner’s circle. No kidding.
Puh-lease, would someone hurry upand sign Carmelo Anthony? That NBA-driven drama played itself out some timeago. Looks like the New York Knicks are onthe verge of exterminating daily ‘Meloheadlines by trading for him, but you nev-er know. He’s played every suitor like a fid-
dle and the tune has become sour.Professional golfer Freddie Couples
tried to turn back the hands of time onPresident’s Day weekend but came upshort against Australia’s Aaron Baddeley. The 51-year-old Couples was in the run-ning for the Northern Trust title at Rivierain “El Lay” but looked fatigued and ranout of gas on Sunday’s back nine.
Have you noticed how silently the SanAntonio Spurs have carved out the bestrecord in the NBA at the All-Star break? It’sas if they’ve taken on the persona of theirveteran leader Tim Duncan whosedemeanor as a modest mouse is verydeceiving.
Uh-oh! Did I just utter Modest Mouse?Music. REO Speedwagon at The Fox The-ater on April 17. (I just want to) “Keep OnLovin' You.”
It was splendid to see the fan supporton February 16 at Rabobank Arena as theCSUB Roadrunners played host to theFresno State Bulldogs. The second-largestcrowd to attend a CSUB game at “The
Rabo” saw a great first half. Unfortunately, the ‘Runners couldn’t sustain theirmomentum in the second half.
C’mon Albert Pujols. Please do not holdbaseball’s St. Louis Cardinals hostage forthe highest per/year contract in the histo-ry of the sport. You are a good guy whohas put up Hall-Of-Fame numbers in yourcareer, assumingly without the help ofPEDs. St. Louis has been good to you. Please reciprocate the love for their sake.(Unless, of course, you want to sign withthe Giants!).
The Chicago Bulls have been calmly lay-ing in the weeds waiting for the soon-to-be return of Joakim Noah and his energyand will make a very deep run in the NBAplayoffs. Point guard extraordinaire Der-rick Rose will orchestrate that title run.
Thought For The Day: Consciouslythink downstream and go with the mentalflow as thinking upstream takes moreeffort.
See you in a month of Sundays.
