COURTESY OF CAL STATE BAKERSFIELD or the third year in a row, Dos Pueblos High School of Goleta won the Kern County Regional Science Bowl at California State University, Bakersfield. Second place went to Stockdale High School and third place went to Centennial High School, both in Bakersfield. The Dos Pueblos team will now advance to the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy in Wash- ington, D.C., April 28-May 2. The speedy final round includ- ed many buzzes by the competi- tors before moderator Miles Muzio, meteorologist for KBAK-29 Eyewitness News, finished giving the multiple choice answers. “I’m always impressed by the level of knowledge of the students here,” Muzio said during the awards ceremony. “Congratula- tions to all.” This year marks the 14th year the Science Bowl has been hosted by CSUB, and the 19th year Kern County has hosted the regional competition. The event featured 150 students from 15 high schools competing in a question-answer quiz format that covers biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, Earth science and astron- omy. The event is sponsored by Occi- dental of Elk Hills and Aera Ener- gy. Dos Pueblos team captain Ilan Goodman said the students put a lot of energy into preparing for the competition. “We’ve been practicing all year. We have meetings every week and more than once a week since New Years. We mostly do practice ques- tions and read textbooks on sub- jects we haven’t had classes on,” he said. The final question of the day was: “What oceanic plate sits west of the South American Plate, forming a convergent boundary?” The answer, given correctly by the Dos Pueblos team, was the Nazca Plate. Thomas Meyer, CSUB professor of physics and computer science and coordinator of the event, said he was pleased by the good sportsmanship of all the students in today’s competition. “They’re amazing,” he said. “That’s why we do it. These are such fantastic kids. Every time I participate in this, I think, ‘The future of America is in good hands — scientifically speaking, that is.’” To learn more about participat- ing in, sponsoring or volunteering for next year’s Science Bowl, con- tact Penny Lampkins at 654-3082 or [email protected]. ee whiz! Seems like a month of Sundays since the last column was contrived. Let’s see, based on an average month, you get about four Sundays so you divide a month by four and times it by 30, and there you have it. Yep, forty-three days ... with “seems” being the key word in the paragraph. Lots of good local sporting events hap- pening this time of year. High school bas- ketball and soccer playoffs ramping up, high school wrestling championships up for grabs, CSUB baseball once again deliv- ering its pitch to the community, the Con- dors scrapping hard, BC baseball and softball, etc. Now that the weather is start- ing to break a bit, treat yourself to some local sporting fare to support our athletes and to perhaps jumpstart your personal fitness campaign as March approaches. When I was growing up (still am!), my buddies and I seamlessly went from foot- ball to basketball to baseball while in high school. Why? Because there wasn’t much else going on to bide our time. Rarely do you see three-sport athletes these days. It’s a sign of the times that the elec- tronic age has gar- nered its share of the attention of students — and perhaps inhibited some from more involvement in school athletics. Strictly my percep- tion. I know that there are kids play- ing multiple sports and I would like to recognize one stu- dent from Frontier High. Her name is Tavia Rutherford. I do not know Tavia personally. I do know that Tavia is a three- sport athlete and I shall add “star” as well. Tavia played on the golf team, will com- pete on the softball team and is one of the top soccer goalies in Kern County for the number-one ranked Division II Titans. Thank you for bearing the torch for multi- ple-sport athletes, Tavia. You are certainly an inspiration. Well, looks like NASCAR has a new “The Kid” moniker to banter around now that 20-year-old Trevor Bayne broke through at the Daytona 500 for his first win. A neo- phyte to be sure, Bayne was hoping for a little experience at Daytona Beach — and got a whole lot more than he bargained for. The circuit was in need of this type of infusion as attendance waned in 2010, such to the point of threatening its eco- nomical future. Nice to see a fresh face in the winner’s circle. No kidding. Puh-lease, would someone hurry up and sign Carmelo Anthony? That NBA- driven drama played itself out some time ago. Looks like the New York Knicks are on the verge of exterminating daily ‘Melo headlines by trading for him, but you nev- er know. He’s played every suitor like a fid- dle and the tune has become sour. Professional golfer Freddie Couples tried to turn back the hands of time on President’s Day weekend but came up short against Australia’s Aaron Baddeley. The 51-year-old Couples was in the run- ning for the Northern Trust title at Riviera in “El Lay” but looked fatigued and ran out of gas on Sunday’s back nine. Have you noticed how silently the San Antonio Spurs have carved out the best record in the NBA at the All-Star break? It’s as if they’ve taken on the persona of their veteran leader Tim Duncan whose demeanor as a modest mouse is very deceiving. Uh-oh! Did I just utter Modest Mouse? Music. REO Speedwagon at The Fox The- ater on April 17. (I just want to) “Keep On Lovin' You.” It was splendid to see the fan support on February 16 at Rabobank Arena as the CSUB Roadrunners played host to the Fresno State Bulldogs. The second-largest crowd to attend a CSUB game at “The Rabo” saw a great first half. Unfortunately, the ‘Runners couldn’t sustain their momentum in the second half. C’mon Albert Pujols. Please do not hold baseball’s St. Louis Cardinals hostage for the highest per/year contract in the histo- ry of the sport. You are a good guy who has put up Hall-Of-Fame numbers in your career, assumingly without the help of PEDs. St. Louis has been good to you. Please reciprocate the love for their sake. (Unless, of course, you want to sign with the Giants!). The Chicago Bulls have been calmly lay- ing in the weeds waiting for the soon-to- be return of Joakim Noah and his energy and will make a very deep run in the NBA playoffs. Point guard extraordinaire Der- rick Rose will orchestrate that title run. Thought For The Day: Consciously think downstream and go with the mental flow as thinking upstream takes more effort.
