The pantry is celebrating another milestone!More than 84,000 pounds of pet food hasbeen donated to our pantry over the pastthree years! This pet food goes into our cityto help struggling community members pro-
vide for their pet.May has already started to be a busy month for
the Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry, more than 3,000pounds of pet food was distributed around town tovarious distribution locations. More deliveries willbe made throughout this month.
Because of hard economic times, the prices ofgoods and services have steadily increased, makingeveryday expenses difficult. Pets have become hid-den victims because pet food is pricey.
The Bakersfield Pet Food Pantry was formedthree years ago. We are a 100 percent all volunteer,non profit group that help keep pets in their homes
by donating pet food to those in dire need. We oper-ate solely on donations from the public.
We assist low income seniors and families, dis-abled, and the homeless with emergency pet food.Often we make the difference if their pet gets fed ornot. Many just need temporary help until they canmake ends meet. Others make sure that their petseat even if they don’t. One lady told us “she under-stands when there is no food in her house, but herdog doesn’t.”

Hillcrest Memorial Park, a local Dig-nity Memorial® provider celebrat-ing 50 years serving Bakersfield,announced its annual MemorialDay Ceremony designed to bring
the community together to honor andremember America’s heroes who gave theirlives in the line of duty.
The event will be held on Monday, May28, at 11:30 a.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park,9101 Kern Canyon Road.
“Memorial Day gives us a unique oppor-tunity to honor and remember those braveAmerican heroes who made the ultimatesacrifice for our nation, men and womenwho have died serving our country,” saidCurtis Woods II, general manager of Hill-crest Memorial Park. “We are delighted to
host this event that brings families andfriends throughout our community togetherin the spirit of patriotism.”
The event will begin with a brief introduc-tion and welcome by Curtis Woods, generalmanager of Hillcrest Memorial Park, andwill include remarks from CongressmanKevin McCarthy of the 22nd District, andEvan Morgan with the Wounded Heroes ofAmerica, the day’s guest speakers.
Participants in the ceremony include theReverend John Heath, American LegionPost #26, the combined JROTCs from Bak-ersfield, South and West high schools, mem-bers of the American Legion Auxiliary, units#213 and #682, and Kern County AssociatedVeterans.
