We URGENTLY need…

To promote human development in an equitable and sustainable way.

To solve the climate crisis with a sense of global responsibility.

To adopt patterns of production, consumption, and reproduction that

safeguard Earth’s regenerative capacities.

To protect and restore the integrity of Earth’s ecological systems with special concern for biological diversity and the natural processes that sustain life.

To encourage and support mutual understanding, solidarity, and cooperation

Recognize that peace is the wholeness created by right relationships with

oneself, other persons, other cultures, other lifes, Earth, and the larger whole

Demilitarize national security systems to the level of a non-provocative defense

posture, and convert military resources to peaceful purposes, including ecological

restoration.

You have just read some principles of The Earth Charter.

The Earth Charter

In 1987 the United Nations World Commission on Environment and

Development called for the creation of a new charter that would set forth

fundamental principles for sustainable development.

The goal was to help build a just, sustainable, and peaceful global

society in the 21st century.

But it was only during the Rio Earth Summit in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro,

Brazil, that the first draft of The Earth Charter was produced.

After an extent participatory discussion in all the continents that lasted

eight years, The Earth Charter was launched in a special ceremony at

The Peace Palace in The Hague, the Netherlands on 29 June, 2000.

Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands attended the ceremony.

Mikhail Gorbachev, Maurice Strong, Steven Rockefeller,

Leonardo Boff and the Nobel Prize winner Wangari Maathai are

amongst the supporters of this important initiative.

You can also take part.

Today, more than ever, we need to disseminate

and put into action The Earth Charter principles.

If you also agree with this urgency,

believe in these principles and have enough breath

to help in this “little ants work”,

we suggest a few actions:

1. Access The Earth Charter website, read the document and if you agree

with the principles endorse the document. Suggest to your company,

organization and friends to also endorse it.

2. Send this presentation to people that think like us and to those that need

to think like us.

3. Do presentations and talk to friends about The Earth Charter.

5. Publish and disseminate the press release about The Earth Charter

Campaign 2009.

4. Help run The Earth Charter 2009 campaign - web banners, TV spot,

magazine ad - planned to launch in Brazil on April 22, 2009, The

International Earth Day.

We will need a lot of help to make this happen!
