Grade A Grade, Round 5 against Mosman at Balmoral Oval SUNDAY
Result North Sydney Leagues WON FIRST INNINGS Innings 1 of Mosman 10/210 (2/17 N Morgan, 2/22 M Kings, 2/30 P Thomson)
Innings 1 of North Sydney Leagues 10/282 (101 D Parker, 51 P Thomson, 31 CG Reed)
Player Points: 3: D Parker, 2: P Thomson, 1: CG Reed
Fielding Points: 3: AB Buddle, 2: T Flutey, 1: J Doyle Week One saw us win the toss batting on a nice, flat Balmoral deck and it was good to see the Doc back with the pads on striding
out to the centre with 'Moon Dog' Mooney to take on the kids from Mosman. The openers didnt do a bad job before both fell and
we were 2 for not many early on. Mad Dog (31) steadied the ship as he has done all year supporting Dan who dispatched the
Mosman bowling attack to all parts of Balmoral. After support from Tyson & myself Dan brought up his ton in style with a straight
drive for four, you beauty Dan - one of the best knocks in A grade in a long time - Im sure there is more to come from him too!!!
Buddle(7) & Kings(10) toiled hard before our pinch hitters Thommo(51) & Cam
'Buzz' Reed (31) came in to really drive home the good work done earlier in the
day, all out for 282 - great day with the bat and looking forward to next week.
Week two came and with Dan stopping off for a skim latte on the way to
Balmoral (he is from the Eastern Suburbs!) we started the field with only 10 for
a short period. The key for today was to bowl a good line & length, build some
pressure & take our chances & that's exactly what we did. Buzz & Mooney took
the new ball a bowled nicely with Mosman's bat's playing & missing regularly.
Both got their reward taking the wickets of Mosman's number 1 & 3 with 50 on
the board & still plenty of runs to get, both caught by second slip without fuss
(Squeak take note!).
For a short period of time Mosman seemed to be getting on top building a solid
partnership and it was tough going for our bowlers, however typical of the
bears this week and with the skippers' cry of 'It shouldn't be this hard boys' ringing in their ears we stuck in there. Helped by some
loose shots & terrible running between wickets by Mosman & good catching (2 to 'Junior' Buddle and a great caught & bowled by
'Mad Dog' Morgan) we saw them reeling again at 5 for 111 and our tails were up! Our first & second change bowlers P Thommo (2
for 30), M Thommo (0 for 11), M Kings (2 for 22) & N Morgan (2 for 17) really stepped up during a tough period building pressure
right throughout the day which was great to see. We saw some good tight bowling by Kings (really needs to speak to his missus to
get more game time), Moon Dog & Buzz at the end of the day saw us home with about 5 or 6 overs to go in the day, our hard work
paid off & the bears had 6 points in the bag - great win boys!
It was a privilege to take the reins & skipper the boys this week & to keep A's winning streak going!

Match Reports
Grade A Grade, Round 6 against West Pymble at Koola Park
Result North Sydney Leagues WON FIRST INNINGS (ONE DAY) Innings 1 of North Sydney Leagues 9/176 (50 J Doyle, 38 AB Buddle, 30 P Thomson)
Innings 1 of West Pymble 10/129 (3/17 L Baker, 2/15 P Edwards, 2/24 E Garrett)
Player Points: 3: J Doyle, 2: L Baker, 1: AB Buddle
Fielding Points: 3: T Flutey, 2: E Garrett, 1: J Doyle Leading into the break this was always going to be a big game. WP (2nd)versus The Mighty Bears (3rd) at 2 points the deficit. The
Bears A’s on their greatest winning streak for a while, winning 2 games on the trot, could we make it three?
After inspecting the pitch and expecting it to be its usual flat
Koola park test wicket, there was something unusual about it that made you wonder whether it was going to go the distance for
the entire 80 overs. The deck looked like it had developed a bit of a crust, which in combination with the yellow looking outfield
would suggest that the ground had received less water than a Chinese Gymnast. A good toss to win and we padded up.
In went Elliott (9)and Lincoln (22) who got us off to their usual solid start and there was talk that 180 would be a good score on
this ground. However we dearly missed Daniel in the middle order and things started to crumble quickly. Pauly Thompson(30) got
a solid start and helped the run rate tick over, however the middle order wickets fell like dominoes and Vanilla did his best
impersonation of Marcel Marceau running between the wickets that I have seen, leaving the Skip stranded and scratching his head
up the danger end. Vanilla was later seen in the car park, collecting money off a few of the Bears who in the past, unfortunately
have not been quick enough to run between the wickets with The Squeak (Uncer you reading this?). The Bears were crawling up in
their caves and licking their wounds at 7 fa 81.
Insert Superman 1 music .>>>>>> Der de de de der, der der der, der de de der, der der der…In came Alexander Buddle (38*), 15
years of age, no fear and with our specialist No.9 (who was earlier, tugging on my arm, “C’mon Skip, how about it, can I bat up the
order, can I, can I ?”) John Doyle (50) comprised our saviours’ innings playing true cricket strokes to all parts of the ground, making
up a partnership of all most 80 runs to take us to a defendable 9 fa 176 off 40 overs. The boys were pumped…
Our turn with the ball. After ripping the red rock out of its protective plastic sleave and counting the seams, I realised we were 2
seams short. A frantic phone call to BB and Burger, who is always so handy in hindsight, tells me later: “mmmphhhgggg, I’ve got
two, 4 piece balls you should’ve rung me, arrrghhh”, scratches arm. The opposing skip was gracious enough to place one on loan,
just as well. Anyhow things started well with Vanilla (8.5.2.8) bowling with his usual venom and Rhys (5.2.0.16) giving away few
runs and causing the opposition to try and increase their run rate with the change bowlers. However gentleman, there was no let
up whatsoever as our bowling roots run deep and Cam (7.1.1.37) got rid of his usual four balls early and then hit the line. Links the
Destroyer (6.1.3.17) got the breakthrough and was the pick of the bowlers, backing up his usual form on his favourite Koola pitch.
Elliott (5.1.2.24) and even Skip (3.0.2.15) all contributed to bringing down the opposition who struggled to chase down the total on
a deteriorating pitch, West Pymble all out for 129 and a great win for the boys. Most oppositions would struggle to make those
runs, with what I consider the best bowling attack of the comp. What a team effort, leap frogging West Pymble into 2nd spot and
only 4 pts behind the Leader (North Shore). Things finally seem o be coming together with this A grade side this year, keep on
rolling boys.

Fielding Points: 3: A Caroll, 2: T Eales, 1: N Horgan There was a great write-up from the NSCA front page:
"Leagues' Len Shaw shows them how it's done
Last week's C Grade match between Macquarie Uni and North Sydney Leagues was set to be an easy win for Mac Uni. At Tunks 4,
Leagues were all out for 92, and the Uni boys then came out hitting with Tony Barnes leading the way with 132 in a total of 8/385.
NS Leagues put in their oldest and staunchest defence by giving 78 year old Len Shaw the opening duties. Tony Barnes from Mac
Uni writes "Len was not out in the first innings after coming in at seven in North Sydney's score of 92. Mac Uni fancied their
chances of an outright and sent North Sydney back in. Len then came out and held the batting together, scoring 44 not out in the
second innings total of 3-163. He was facing some very quick 18 year old bowlers with quite a few balls flying through. He took a
number of balls on the body but his defence stayed rock solid and later in the day he opened up with some firmly played fours. It
was a pretty decent effort from a 78 year old and a bit of an inspiration for all the Associations "older" players. He was certainly
the best batsman on the day and the toughest to dislodge we've encountered this season."

Fielding Points: 3: A Than Aye, 2: B Fraser Good effort in the field, Alex threw down middle stump from the boundary for the first wicket, set 166 to win.
Chase started ok despite a few early wickets. Swanny and Adam were looking good and had us a 5/120 odd at the drinks break
(swanny was out off the last ball before drinks trying to defend after already hitting 3 fours in the over... always attack) and then
the wobbles started, and continued until all out just 3 runs short.
Should have won, but didn't.
Grade C 1 Day, Round 7 against Wanderers at Blackman Upper SUNDAY
Result North Sydney Leagues WON FIRST INNINGS (ONE DAY) Innings 1 of Wanderers 10/86 (3/15 A Carmichael, 3/33 A Kidd, 2/10 L Kitchen)
Innings 1 of North Sydney Leagues 1/90 (40 T Howell, 30 S Dey, 14 S Chapple)
Player Points: 3: A Kidd, 2: A Carmichael, 1: L Kitchen
Fielding Points: 3: M Kenny, 2: A Kidd, 1: S Evans Despite the ridiculous temperature and a noticeable (and unlikely) absentee just before play was to start, the threat of a possible
afternoon shower and resulting draw forced the Bears into sending the Wanderers in to bat.
With the early pace and accuracy from Brendan "Dolly" Dunne who was charging in down the slope, runs were always going to be
difficult to come by for the opposition. Despite a number of half-chances and constant playing-and-missing, the opening spell only
removed 1 of the openers.
Enter the destructive bowling pairing of Andrew "The Kat" Kidd and Andrew "Freddie" Carmichael. The momentum of the game
quickly swung in the Bears favour, with Freddie breaking middle stump in two with a rocket delivery and The Kat just a couple of
inches away from taking a catch off his own bowling to record a would-be hat-trick. One over-excited and unnamed fielder was
heard to comment that "good or bad, whenever The Kat is bowling, things always seem to happen". Amen.
While the Freddie and The Kat combination was indeed special, the real momentum changer for the innings came from some
inspired wicket keeping from Matt "Spanky" Kenny (3 stumpings) who, even with his best efforts and questionable choice in head
gear (Samuel L. Jackson inspired hat), continues to struggle to get his unfortunate nickname changed.
After 23 overs and only 86 runs, the Wanderers appeared to have had enough and the flight and guile of Lachlan "Kitch" Kitchen
and pace and bounce of Nick "Snake Charmer" Barrett quickly wrapped up the remaining few batsmen.
The final result was never in doubt with Simon "Goldilocks" Chapple (14) and Tim "Trigger" Howell (40*) opening the batting - it
was just a matter of time. After a brilliant bit of fielding from the opposition, Goldilocks was removed and Sujit "Sparkles" Dey
(30*) entered, informing everyone that he had to leave shortly to make it to a surprise birthday party. Needless to say, the
remaining 40 runs were achieved in quick fashion, with the Bears wrapping up the game before the 10th over was bowled.

Grade C 1 Day, Round 9 against Wanderers at Forsyth Lower SUNDAY
Result North Sydney Leagues WON FIRST INNINGS (ONE DAY) Innings 1 of Wanderers 10/172 (3/4 N Barrett, 2/31 A Carmichael, 2/63 L Kitchen)
Innings 1 of North Sydney Leagues 8/173 (48 N Barrett, 46 T Howell, 42 M Kenny)
Player Points: 3: N Barrett, 2: T Howell, 1: M Kenny
Fielding Points: 3: M Kenny, 2: T Howell, 1: L Kitchen This game was always going to be a tough one for the team following the previous nights buck's party. Fortunately, Freddie was
unable to attend the festivities, so the team at let's had a chance at a result.
The outlook for the Bears wasn't flash early, with only 9 players at the field with only a couple of minutes to go before play
commenced - the two offenders, Spanky and Snake Charmer had only made it home at 7.30am that morning. Fortunately for the
team, Spanky was only lost a suburb away, whereas Snake Charmer remained non-responsive on the mobile.
After winning the toss, the decision was made to rattle the stumps and aim for an early finish. Unfortunately, our opening attack
wasn't the most ferocious, with the ever reliable Dolly ambling into his delivery stride at the speed of a corpse - maybe it was the
hangover, or maybe it was the blue pimco tracksuit pants he was wearing. While the opening bowling partnership only managed
to pickup the sole wicket, confidence was restored upon 1) the arrival of Snake Charmer to the ground, and 2) the change bowlers
Freddie and Kitch coming into the action. Success was immediate, with the pair burning through the overs while picking up some
valuable wickets. With Trigger volunteering to through on the gloves at the halfway point, Spanky and Snake Charmer quickly
mopped up the opposition tail, ending their innings at 172.
Unfortunately the Bears innings got off to a horrendous start, falling to 5/29 before Trigger and Spanky steadied the innings.
While the opposition thought they had this one in the bag, the Bears remained quietly confident given the stacked lower-order
which was sobering up as every minute passed. Despite Kitcho claiming he was the best no.11 going around and we would be
fine, his services were not required with Snake Charmer and Freddie ably bringing the team home in the end. Congrats must go to
Trigger, Spanky and Snake Charmer who all just missed out on cracking the half-ton and to Plugga and Mule who put in a more
than a solid stint out in the middle umpiring.
