The History of DNA

Early Work

FriedrichMiescher,1869,firstisolatesasubstancefromthenucleusofcellsthathecalls“nuclein.” later“nucleicacid.”

Biochemistsidentifytwotypesofnucleicacids,RNAandDNA.

In1929,PhoebusLevineattheRockefellercenteridentifiesthefourbasesofDNA.

What Does DNA Do?ResearchersknewthatDNAwasfoundinchromosomes,theydoubtedthatitwasthehereditarymaterial.

Onlyfourbases.Howcouldforbasescodeforallsortsofproteins?

Researchersthoughtthattheproteinalsofoundinchromosomeswasprobablythehereditaryfactor.

Frederick Griffith

Erwin Chargaff

Chargaffproposedthatthesebasespairwithoneanother.
