A dominative midfield display wasn’tenough as the Lingers lost out to Oak-wood.
The game started with a touching dis-play of Remembrance as captain SamCockerill laid a wreath of poppies in thecentre circle and lead the teams in aminutes silence. The sides also worepoppies on their kits as a mark of re-spect to those who gave their lives.
Lingfield dominated in the openingstretches and indeed for a lot of thegame, and it took less than 10 minutesfor Kerran Boylan to tap in the firstgoal thanks to good work from Ro-maine Atkinson. Unfortunately, just afew minutes later it was even again asa fast Oakwood counter met the on-rushing Daniel Smith, leading to theball flicking into the air wildly and land-ing in the back of the home net.
The rest of the half followed a similarpattern with the Lingers enjoying largeperiods of chances and possession, andthe visitors occasionally looking danger-ous on the counter. Despite this, just15 minutes into the second half it was
the away side that took the lead, astheir number 9 headed in at the nearpost. You could count the number ofgenuine Oakwood chances on one handand yet just moments later they had athird, as Daniel Smith’s scuffed clear-ance in the wet allowed Oakwood tocross and tap in again.
Insult was added to injury as ChristianLondoño, arguably Lingfield’s best crea-tor in the second half had to limp offinjured 20 minutes from the end. Oak-wood’s confidence swelled and they be-gan to create more and in the fourthminute of extra time the away number7 (whose presence on the pitch was du-bious considering some of the challeng-es he’d made throughout the game)found himself through. He calmly rolledin the fourth and final goal, leaving theLingers feeling very hard done by in-deed.

Formed in 1888 as Haywards Heath Juniors F.C the clubdominated the Mid Sussex League in the early 1920'sbefore they left to join the Brighton + District League in1931. The championship was duly won the followingseason with a 100% record and Haywards Heath joinedthe Sussex County League in 1932.
After WW2 the club re-entered the county league onit's resumption, winning the league title in 1949/50 and1950/51. When Hanbury Park was opened in 1952,Haywards Heath joined the Metropolitan League andcompeted against the third teams of Football LeagueDiv. 1 clubs.
In 1957/58 the club lifted the Sussex Senior Cup, beforerejoining the County League in 1961/62. HaywardsHeath won the County League once more in 1969/70,but just over ten years later found themselves in Div. 2following relegation in 1980/81.
Div. 1 status was regained in 1986/87 as runners-up toWick and the following season the club finished in 3rdplace. However, The Blues were relegated once more
in 1991/92. Worst was to come, with the club droppinginto Div. 3 the following season, were they remaineduntil winning promotion back to senior football at theend of the 2002/03 season as runners-up to Midhurst+ Easebourne.
Haywards Heath were relegated back to Div. 3 followingjust one season. After what appeared to be a renais-sance for the club, worse was to follow in 2004/05 asThe Blues finished one off the bottom of County LeagueDiv. 3, but were spared relegation. In the midst of signif-icant changes off the pitch, the club improved to finishin a mid-table position in 2005/06.
In the last few years Heath have flirted with promotion. The 2010/11 season under Tim Wilkins saw them againjust miss out on promotion, but after a poor start to the2011/12 season, Tim stepped down mid season andSimon Corless took over. The club finished in a relega-tion place but have just been given a reprieve and willcontinue to compete in County League 3 for the2012/13 season. Simon Corless is already looking aheadand Heath will be hoping for a good competitive season.
