The Penny Press

Before the Penny Press

Benjamin Day started the Sun, the first successful penny paper.

James Gordon Bennett started the Herald, which would become the most successful paper, selling worldwide.

Horace Greeley’s Tribune believed a paper should educate people as well as keep them informed.

New York was the birthplace of the Penny Press. Newsboys bought the papers and resold them, their cries filling the New York Streets.

The popularity of the Penny Press grew, and soon the sensational, cheap newspapers were in demand all over the country.

The legacy of the Penny Press lives on in the use of advertising as a source of income, and in the informational, educational, and entertainment articles in today’s newspapers.
