The Pines of Rome

Composed by: Ottorino Respighi

I’m bored.Let’s take over

the world.

Ottorino Respighi● Ottorino Respighi was born in Bologna, Italy

on July 9th, 1879● He was taught piano and violin by his father,

who was a local piano teacher.● Respighi went to Russia to be principal violist in

the orchestra of the Russian Imperial Theatre in Saint Petersburg during its season of Italian opera.

● He then returned to Bologna, where he earned a second diploma in composition.

The Pines of Rome● The this piece is in the FORM of a Symphonic Poem● A Symphonic Poem is:

○ “A one-movement orchestral work based on an idea or theme from a poetic, dramatic or other non-musical source.”

In other words:○ A “Symphonic Poem” is a piece with a story and

characters.

○ A Symphony may or may not have characters, and is often non-objective, or “music for musics sake”.

The Pines of Rome● This piece has FOUR movements

● Each of the four movements depicts

pine trees in different locations in

Rome at different times of the day.

“Pines of the Villa Borghese”● The great Villa Borghese is a monument to the

patronage of the Borghese family, who dominated the city in the early seventeenth century.

● This first movement portrays children playing by the pine trees in the Villa Borghese gardens.

● It is a sunny morning and the children sing nursery rhymes and play soldiers.
