UK HIGH SCHOOLROAD SHOW
THE STUDENT WORLD
October 2017
The High School Road Shows are an excellent way to meet students and
build relationships with careers advisers in the very best schools across the
UK, by way of overseas study fairs and presentations. These schools include
public, private, grammar and state funded schools in targeted regions of the
UK, that we feel have the best profile for overseas study.
Developing a presence in UK schools is fundamental to a successful
awareness raising and student recruitment campaign. In the build up to the
Road Shows, our dedicated UK School Liaison and Operations Manager,
Anna Birbeck, visits the schools to prepare students for the event, often
giving an assembly talk to students in years 11, 12 and 13.
Each Road Show lasts 3.5 days and the group of universities typically visits
up to 12 schools, with access to more by collaborative hosting, where parents
and students from schools in the local area are also encouraged to attend.
The number of universities from each country is limited to 6 per Road Show,
to ensure our events maintain a truly global feel and aren’t dominated by any
one country.
We take care of the planning, organisation and management of all aspects of
the Road Shows to ensure your visit is a comfortable one!

For a non-selective state school, this school is an anomaly and features in ‘The Good Schools’
Guide’ which is the best regarded on line resource for parents. State schools that make it into this
guide are an elite few so this is a real indication of the exceptional teaching standards and
achievement of the students.
Students here achieve very good results, comparing extremely favourably with local and national
averages. In 2016, 81 per cent achieved 5+ A*-C grades including English and maths (59 per cent
A*-A grades). It is designated as a high performing specialist school with a languages specialism
(it was the first school in the borough to teach Mandarin from year 7 to 13).
The school’s motto is Vive Ut Vivas (live that you may have life) and the school extols this to the
full with partnerships with schools in Africa, India, China and Singapore. The school also has a
dedicated Director of global learning and communication who says, ‘We want to prepare our
students fully for the commercial and globalised world.’ This is mirrored in the fact that students
here are receptive to studying abroad and fully engaged in learning more about their options for
overseas study.
Main subject areas of interest are medicine, engineering, biochemistry, Chinese, economics,
architecture and languages. We had had recent feedback that a student has had a place accepted
at one of the universities on our last tour.

Fees: £20,070 (day)
Ibstock Place School (IPS) is an independent co-educational day school for pupils aged 4 to 18,
providing a rich variety of opportunity in a friendly, supportive atmosphere with a strong family
ethos.
IPS is academically strong and its students perform very impressively in examinations. GCSE
results for 2015 were outstanding. 79% of all GCSE entries were graded at A* or A; this
achievement placed IPS in 13th position in the national table of 239 Independent Co-educational
Schools listed in The Times (29 August 2015). These were no exception - A-Level results for 2016
recorded a record-breaking average UCAS points score of 409 points per pupil.
In terms of life after IPS, all students benefit from an extensive Careers and Higher Education
programme. The overwhelming majority of Sixth Formers progress onto university and as such, a
great deal of time is devoted to preparing them for the challenge of HE admission both within the
Sixth Form and earlier on. Recognising that increasing numbers of pupils are looking beyond the
UK for Higher Education, the School also provides excellent support for those wishing to apply to
universities in the United States, mainland Europe and Australasia.
The US is a popular destination choice for leavers, with students recently having taken places at
American universities such as John Hopkins, University of North Carolina, University of Florida,
University of California and George Washington University, to name a few.
Porgrammes students go on to take at university are varied but there seems to be a strong lean
towards economics, business and finance related courses, as well as modern languages.

Sutton Valence School (SVS) has the benefits of being both a day and a boarding school.
This allows for a bespoke provision, with many day pupils taking advantage of flexible
boarding opportunities. Sixth Form life actively encourages team spirit and leadership
skills, responsibility for themselves and others and a feeling of pride in their endeavours
and those of their peers, whilst always maintaining a primary main focus on academic
achievement. SVS is proud of the excellent value added each student achieves in its Sixth
Form. Once again, Sutton Valence has proved that it deserves to be in the top 2% of
schools nationally for adding academic value for every student with 67% of the year
achieving A*-B grades.
Over the past nine years, the number of A* to B grades at A Level has risen by 75%. This
year, an outstanding one in five of our Upper Sixth achieved straight A* or A grades which
is a substantial rise in the amount of top A* grades from last year. In fact, out of our
students, 13% achieved the coveted A*, even as national top level grades fall for the fifth
year in a row.
The dedicated Careers Department, through education, support and guidance, empowers
SVS students pupils to make their own informed decisions which will ease their transition
from School into Higher Education and the world of work. With over 65 applicants to
university in 2016, no two SVS students have followed the same path. They end up all over
the world, whether studying in American or European universities, in this country, or
applying for a prestigious Higher Apprenticeship, or organising a useful and meaningful
gap year.
The subjects that students go on to study at university are varied, the most popular in the
recent leavers destinations are focused on Business and Management/Marketing/
International Hospitality.

Fees: £21,105 (day); £32,865 (full board)
The Blundell’s student is a true all-rounder. The school wants its students to focus on more
than one thing and is renowned for its extensive activities and sports programme. Blundell’s
students are made very aware of the benefits of living an enriching and varied life, and all
realise how important it is to complement the academic drive in the classroom with a healthy
and active life.
The academic programme at Blundell’s is extensive with most subject combinations being
possible. All students choose 4 A level subjects in the Lower 6th and have the option of
dropping one subject as they move into the Upper Sixth. Students are also encouraged to
take an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) – a project that allows them to develop the
higher order skills that are demanded in a successful university student.
With academic rigour forming the foundation of the 6th Form at Blundell’s, this school aims
to prepare each individual for the next step in their lives and equip them with the attributes
that one would hope for in a successful young adult. Lessons are designed to push the
student to their full potential, and each individual is challenged to discover every possible
pathway to future success.
Blundell’s was delighted with the excellent A level results achieved by its students once again
last year. In the Upper Sixth (Year 13) of 97 students, 41% of the results gained were at A*/A
with 23 students gaining 3 A grades or higher and over two thirds of all grades were between
A* and B. The A Level pass rate was 99%.
From the moment students enter the 6th Form the discussion begins on where they would
like to be when they step away from Blundell’s. For many, this is the university pathway.
Blundells has a dedicated Careers and Further Education co-ordinator, and the students have
a Futures lesson every week as part of their timetable. This gives them every opportunity to
make the right decision on university choices, apprenticeships, gap years and the world of
work. There are also many lectures and talks designed to help with career choice. Business
Management seems to be a popular choice for many going on to university and there is an
increasing interest in overseas destinations.

Sixth formers at Sidcot enjoy a more autonomous environment from that of the senior school; they do not have to wear a school uniform and not every lesson period is a formal class. This, together with an endless range of fantastic opportunities to achieve the best academic results, in an atmosphere of openness, encourages students to develop their own ideas and forge their own identity.
In order to provide all its students with a stimulating and creative curriculum, Sidcot offers the choice of studying the IB Diploma or A Levels. The ethos of the IB, with its broad curriculum and emphasis on study skills, community service and internationalism fits well with Sidcot’s Quaker values. A Levels are also excellent preparation for the demands of top class universities and although the IB is more widely recognised internationally, A levels are still a valued mode of entry into universities across the world which is why Sidcot continues to offer them as an option.
Sidcot is a non-selective school and is extremely proud of its students’ academic achievements. The following information gives an indication of how the school has performed against national comparators in external examinations.
A levels:A*-A grades – 34% (national pass rate is 25.8%)A*-C grades – 81% (national pass rate is 77.5)
IB Diploma:Pass Rate – 100% (world average 79%)Average IB Score – 30.1 (world average score 30.1)
Once students reach the sixth form they are assigned their own ‘Progression Adviser’ from Sidcot’s experienced Careers Team. This advisor is a sounding board and a mentor, helping the student plan their next steps whether it is choosing a university course, applying for an apprenticeship, or making decisions about a gap year. Students at Sidcot are encouraged to be ambitious and adventurous and when they leave they have confidence to make informed choices on what is right for them.
Last year 95% of students were successful in gaining a place at university, with 3% taking a planned gap year. Of those going to university, 86% secured their first choice of institution. Russel Group universities were attended by 54%, other UK universities by 41% and International Universities by 5% (which equates to around 8 students). This figure is likely to increase as there is a growing interest in overseas university destinations

Kings Bruton School was founded in 1519 by 3 eminent men who originated from the town of
Bruton. There has been much change since the School was founded nearly five centuries ago,
and the Founders’ original avowed aim of producing ‘perfight latyn men’ has been greatly
modified to suit 21st Century needs. Nevertheless, true to its traditions, the School still has
close links with the town and the parish church, and students continue to be encouraged to
develop their abilities in a friendly, stable, but progressive, environment as a preparation for
life in the modern world.
Life at King’s is full of variety and opportunities. Pupils enjoy a broad and challenging
academic curriculum. The Sixth Form at King’s is a place where ambition and aspiration is
encouraged both in the now and for the future, and pupils are guided in their paths ahead.
Kings Bruton students are consistent in their success at A Level. Out of 151 who took A Levels
in 2016, there was a 100 % pass rate, with 66.2% achieving A*- B grades.
Recognising that no one route is right for every pupil, Kings Bruton offers an established and
experienced programme of careers advice and university preparation, tailored to getting the
best out of every individual. Dedicated time is given to guide pupils in university applications
and their career explorations, helping them find their next step beyond the Sixth Form.
Where appropriate, pupils are prepared for elite university applications, including Oxbridge
and Russell Group. More recently Kings has seen a keen emerging interest in overseas
universities and the Head of Sixth Form has attended Conferences and Networking events
focused on studying abroad, keen to establish links with more International Universities.

In addition to a deep routed culture of learning, Warminster emphasises the development of
character, values, leadership and service, which it sees as vital in competition for aspirational jobs.
Academic success is always important, but Warminster believes it is these qualities that will help
ensure a personally fulfilling life as much as a professionally rewarding one.
At Warminster, Sixth Formers can choose between the traditional A Level programme or the
highly rated International Baccalaureate Diploma, both of which produce strong results. The IB
average score for students is 34.3, well above the world average. A levels are also of a particularly
high standard with a 100% pass rate and 100% A*-B in 7 subjects.
A new IB qualification, as a post-16 option will be offered from September 2017 at Warminster
School. The IBCP is a post-16 qualification which incorporates the values of the IB into a unique
programme addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. The
programme leads to further/higher education, apprenticeships or employment. Students
undertake academic study through IB Diploma programme subjects, accredited career-related
learning, and through the IBCP core ‘learn how to learn’ and engage with real-world issues. The
IBCP Core, good performance in two Diploma Programme subjects and in the Career-Related
study combined can yield the equivalent of BBB at A Level. The IBCP provides the required

Bedales School

To fully understand Bedales you need to understand something of the school’s history and
evolution. Founded in 1893, as a humane alternative to the authoritarian regimes typical of late
Victorian public schools, it’s founder believed that involving “head, hand and heart” was the key
to growth and development. This philosophy is still the corner stone around which Bedales’
innovative education system is built.
Bedales aims for its students have remained ambitious, both academically and more broadly, in
terms of students’ personal development. Even today, the contrast between Bedales and other
schools remains strong. Bedales believes that its informal approach engenders a genuine sense
of partnership between teacher and student and a shared excitement about ideas and
educational discovery. Educational innovation continues with bespoke ‘Bedales Assessed
Courses (BAC)’ which can be taken as an alternative to GCSEs in years 10 and 11. The BAC
allows students the freedom to find themselves extended beyond the confines of the GCSE
syllabus, whilst not being pressed into the examinations treadmill. Instead students work with
material that is specifically designed to promote Bedales’ central education aim which is, “to
develop inquisitive thinkers with a love of learning who cherish independent thought.”
Bedales students go on to study A Levels in the Sixth Form and have achieved strong results for
2016 with the school’s highest ever percentage of A* grades at 23%. 46% of all grades were A*-
A and 78% at A*-B.
Bedales offers a gradual and structured introduction to higher education and careers. There is a
dedicated Careers team to support students every step of the way when it comes to making
informed decisions about their futures. Bedales’ has a specialist advisor on entry to North
American Universities who works closely with the growing number of students applying to the
US and Canada and arranges SAT tuition for those applying to universities in the US.
