Critical Need to Educate and Assist Family Caregivers

With Their Responsibilities

OBJECTIVE Preserve and improve the wellness of family caregivers, with a special focus on the Alzheimer’s caregiver.

Improve caregivers’ self-care and ability to manage emotional stressors and tough decisions while bolstering their access to the latest technologies and community resources.

FOUR PRIMARY GOALS Goal 1: Form multi-disciplinary Advisory Council to foster innovative partnership development among Virginia’s academic programs in aging as well as key statewide service providers.

•Backbone of the Institute and its activities •Offers peer-to-peer connections and opportunities for collaboration •Facilitates new thinking, resources and practice

Goal 2: Develop state-of-the-art apps that assist caregivers through a Virginia App Design Competition

• Competition among current students at Virginia colleges and universities.

Goal 3: Create enhanced tools for Virginia caregivers, including specialized content for Alzheimer’s caregivers and an enhanced Caregiver to Caregiver Forum.

Goal 4: Create a virtual, online hub to share Institute’s activities.

•For consumers, as well as password protected area for Advisory Council Members

•Advisory Council Members can use platform to:

oShare best practices oPursue opportunities for joint initiatives oAdvocate for VA family caregivers

TAKE AWAYS: “What Can We Do?” Be an advocate for seniors, adults with disabilities and caregivers! Support funding related programs that get your state and locality “age wave ready” THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX: fund public/private partnership non-profits focused on promoting the health and wellness of older adults, adults with disabilities and caregivers.
