PRAYER OF THE DAY M: Let us pray that we live repentant lives. C: Holy and merciful God, we thank

you for giving your Son Jesus to die on the cross for us sinners. Turn us away from our sins and back to a life of trust in you. We ask this through Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

FIRST READINGIsaiah 55:1-9 CEV Come to the Lord, who is merciful

R: The first reading for the third

Sunday in Lent is written in chapter 55 of Isaiah, beginning at verse one.

Isaiah 55:1-9 The Lord says, If you are thirsty, come

and drink water! If you don't have any money, come, eat what you want! Drink wine and milk without paying a cent.

2Why waste your money on what really isn't food? Why work hard for something that doesn't satisfy?

Isaiah 55:1-9 Listen carefully to me, and you will

enjoy the very best foods. 3Pay close attention!

• Come to me and live. I will promise you the eternal love and loyalty that I promised David. 4I made him the leader and ruler of the nations; he was my witness to them.

Isaiah 55:1-9 5You will call out to nations you have

never known. And they have never known you, but they will come running because I am the LORD, the holy God of Israel, and I have honoured you.

Isaiah 55:1-9 6Turn to the LORD! He can still be

found. Call out to God! He is near. 7Give up your crooked ways and your

evil thoughts. Return to the LORD our God. He will be merciful and forgive your sins.

Isaiah 55:1-9 8The LORD says: "My thoughts and

my ways are not like yours. 9Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, my thoughts and my ways are higher than yours.

This is the Word of the Lord.C: Thanks Be to God.

Psalm 63:1-8 CEV

R: The Psalm is Psalm 631You are my God. I worship you. In my heart, I long for you, as I would long for a stream in a scorching desert.

C:2I have seen your power and your glory in the place of worship.

Psalm 63:1-8 CEV

R:3Your love means more than life to me, and I praise you.

C: 4As long as I live, I will pray to you.

Psalm 63:1-8 CEV

R: 5I will sing joyful praises and be filled with excitement like a guest at a banquet.

C:6I think about you before I go to sleep, and my thoughts turn to you during the night.

Psalm 63:1-8 CEV

R: 7You have helped me, and I sing happy songs in the shadow of your wings.

C: 8I stay close to you and your powerful arm supports me.

Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit

As it was in the beginning is now and will be for ever. Amen.

SECOND READING1 Corinthians 10:1-13 CEVDo not take God's grace for granted

R: The second reading is written in chapter 10 of First Corinthians, beginning at verse one.

SECOND READINGFriends, I want to remind you that all

of our ancestors walked under the cloud and went through the sea.

2This was like being baptized and becoming followers of Moses.

3All of them also ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same spiritual drink, which flowed from the spiritual rock that followed them. That rock was Christ.

SECOND READING5But most of them did not please

God. So they died, and their bodies were scattered all over the desert.

6What happened to them is a warning to keep us from wanting to do the same evil things.

SECOND READING7They worshiped idols, just as the

Scriptures say, "The people sat down to eat and drink. Then they got up to dance around." So don't worship idols.

8Some of those people did shameful things, and in a single day about twenty-three thousand of them died. Don't do shameful things as they did.

SECOND READING9And don't try to test Christ as some

of them did and were later bitten by poisonous snakes.

10Don't even grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel.

11These things happened to them as a warning to us. All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.

SECOND READING12Even if you think you can stand up

to temptation, be careful not to fall. 13You are tempted in the same way that everyone else is tempted.

But God can be trusted not to let you be tempted too much, and he will show you how to escape from your temptations.

This is the Word of the LordC: Thanks be to God.

47

RESPONSE

C: ♫ Christ humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,

even death on a cross.

gospelLuke 13:1-9 CEV

Repent or die!

M: The holy gospel is written in chapter

13 of the Gospel according to St Luke, beginning at verse one.

C: ♫ Glory to you, O Lord.

gospelM: About this same time Jesus was

told that Pilate had given orders for some people from Galilee to be killed while they were offering sacrifices.

gospel2Jesus replied: Do you think that these people were

worse sinners than everyone else in Galilee just because of what happened to them?   3Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also be killed.

gospel4What about those eighteen people

who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them? Do you think they were worse than everyone else in Jerusalem?   5Not at all! But you can be sure that if you don't turn back to God, every one of you will also die.

gospel6Jesus then told them this story: A man had a fig tree growing in his

vineyard. One day he went out to pick some figs, but he didn't find any.

7So he said to the gardener, "For three years I have come looking for figs on this tree, and I haven't found any yet. Chop it down! Why should it take up space?”

gospel8The gardener answered, "Master,

leave it for another year. I'll dig around it and put some manure on it to make it grow.   9Maybe it will have figs on it next year. If it doesn't, you can have it cut down."

This is the Word of the Lord.C: ♫ Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn

We sing :

Delay not, delay not v. 1,3,5

LHS 304 CAL 293Thomas Hastings (1784-1872), alt.

62

Delay not, delay not

1. Delay not, delay not, O sinner, draw near,

The waters of life are now flowing for Thee.

No price is demanded, the Saviour is here;

Redemption is purchased, salvation is free.

63

Delay not, delay not

3. Delay not, delay not! The Spirit of grace,

Long grieved and resisted, may take His sad flight,

And leave thee in darkness to finish thy race,

To sink in the gloom of eternity’s night.

64

Delay not, delay not

5. Delay not, delay not! Why longer abuse

The love and compassion of Jesus, thy God?

A fountain is opened; how canst thou refuse

To wash and be cleansed in His pardoning blood?

65

Sermon

Hymn

We sing as our free will offering is received.

What a friend

LH 426 CAL 293Joseph Scriven (1820-1886)

What a friend

1. What a friend we have in Jesus, All our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry Everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry Everything to God in prayer.

What a friend

2. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; Take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; Take it to the Lord in prayer.

What a friend

3. Are we weak and heavy-laden, Cumbered with a load of care? Precious Saviour, still our refuge! Take it to the Lord in prayer. Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to the Lord in prayer; In His arms He’ll take and shield you, You will find a solace there. †
