This program is registered with the AIA/CES for continuing

professional education. As such, it does not include content that may

be deemed or construed to be an approval or endorsement by the

AIA of any material of construction

or any method or manner of handling, using, distributing,

or dealing in any material or product. Questions related

to specific materials, methods, and services will be

addressed at the conclusion of this presentation.

creation, it is a re-generative force” –Colin Naylor

The Architect’s Compact

Design buildings as minimal consumers and generators of

energy and other resources.

Use building materials that benefit the environment

throughout their lifecycle

Construct buildings with inspiring and health-giving

internal environments

Site buildings so they foster community

Revitalize cities to capitalize on their inherent efficiency.

Photovoltaic cells and arrays, also known as solar panels, convert

sunlight into electrical energy. Now being used in a number of building

applications, including shingles and fenestration, photovoltaics are

becoming a common onsite renewable energy source. Whether roof-

mounted or built into the design, solar cells are connected in series to

achieve proper voltages. The energy produced can either be stored in

batteries or tied directly to the municipal grid. In some cases, you may

qualify for tax credits or rebates when purchasing and installing

photovoltaic panels. You also may be able to sell the extra energy you

produce back to your local utility.

BUILDING INTEGRATED PHOTOVOLTAICS (BIPV)

The term "thin-film silicon" typically refers to silicon-based PV devices other

than amorphous silicon cells and single-crystalline silicon cells (where the

silicon layer is thicker than 200 micrometers). These films have high

absorptivity of light and may require cell thicknesses of only a few micrometers

or less. Nanocrystalline silicon and small-grained polycrystalline silicon –

considered thin-film silicon – may be able to replace amorphous silicon alloys

as the bottom cell in multijunction devices. As with other thin films, advantages

include the savings of material, monolithic device design, use of inexpensive

substrates, and manufacturing processes that are low temperature and

possible over large areas.

Water

•Use low impact development principles. •Use vegetated swales and depressions to reduce runoff. •Reduce and filter surface runoff. •Use pervious paving materials.

•Consider incorporating green roofs into the project. •Storm water collection systems.
