Dear Friends,
This weekend is the Third Sunday of Advent where we hear in the First Reading “Rejoice in the Lord always, again, I say rejoice”. We light a pink candle on the Advent Wreath and the candle is called the Candle of Joy as we “rejoice” as we prepare for the celebration of Christmas and also the second coming of Christ. Again we hear about John the Baptist in the Gospel as he “prepares the way of the Lord”.
The Pope launched the Year of Mercy on Wednesday in Rome. Over the next 12 months we will hear more about the mercy and compassion of God and our need to be merciful and forgiving people as well.
Wednesday evening we will celebrate the Communal Rite of Reconciliation at 7.00 pm at Our Lady of Lourdes Church.
Also on Wednesday evening we will celebrate an extra weekday Mass at 6.00pm at Our Lady of Lourdes. At Acacia Ridge the special Masses preparing for Christmas will begin on Wednesday at 4:30 am in the morning – these Masses will continue at 4:30 am at Acacia Ridge until Christmas Eve.
The Marian Groups in our Parish enjoyed a wonderful Mass last Saturday morning to celebrate the Immaculate Conception of Mary. A collection was taken up to help fund a new pew for our Church refurbishment and $425 was raised. Thank you very much.
There are sheets at the back of the Church for children and our Ministers to register to Minister at all the Christmas Children's Masses and all the other Masses. All our Ministers are asked to volunteer for all the Masses at Christmas time.
We are continuing to receive funds from our Parishioners towards the refurbishment and extension of Our Lady of Lourdes Church. We have received funds and promises for all the altar furniture, four new pews, five refurbished pews and 150 cubic metres. As you can see from our thermometer on page 3, we have raised $64,069 over the last month. Wonderful news.
A few date claimers for the Sunnybank Parish next year are: Parish Feast Day - Friday, 5th February; Faith 16 talk by the Archbishop - Thursday, 18
th February; Multicultural
Mass - Sunday, 6th March. Please put these dates in your diary.
Faith 16 is being held on the Thursday nights of Lent next year beginning on 11th February. On each of these nights, we will travel to the different Parishes in the Deanery to listen to guest speakers on the topic of “Mercy”. There are some posters and prayer cards in the churches with more details. God Bless, Fr Dan

Third Sunday of Advent: Year C
Introduction: Today’s readings remind us that God is not only the source of our joy but rejoices with and for us. Such joy and peace are meant to be shared and shape our behaviour with others.
First Reading: Baruch 5: 1-9 Jerusalem - the centre and symbol of God’s presence with his people - is the focus of God’s joy and is called to be a witness to the nations.
Second Reading: Philippians 1: 4-6, 8-11 Paul encourages the community at Philippi to pray for the gift of God’s peace that is so much greater than we can understand.
Gospel: Luke 3: 1-6 John the Baptist points to practical ways of responding to God’s call and reminds his listeners how different the Christ will be when He comes.

YEAR OF MERCY FROM POPE FRANCIS
“At times we are called to gaze even more attentively on mercy so that we may become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives. For this reason, I have proclaimed an ‘Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy’ as a spe-cial time for the Church, a time when the witness of believers might grow stronger and more effective.”
[Misericordiae vultus, no.3]
YEAR OF MERCY PRAYER Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Send your spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to the captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the Intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen

FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION
The Feast of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception on Sat 5 Dec reflected the cultural diversity of both our Parishes with the beautiful Rosary Bouquet presented in 5 languages. Parishioners and friends from the other Churches were brought together by our Mother Mary in a melting pot, experiencing the delights of a traditional Samoan Offertory dance, evergreen Marian hymns, rousing Christmas Carols and delicacies at Lunch. Thank you, Fr Dan for celebrating the Mass. And, thank you to all our cheerful helpers! We came together as one and certainly felt the Joy with our Mother! May she enfold you in her protective mantle over Christmas and the New Year! Blessings in abundance ... Patrick & Celine

FAITH 16
Pope Francis (2015) in announcing the extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, reminded us that we need to “contemplate the mystery of mercy” as mercy is a source of peace, joy and serenity that our salvation relies on and is revealed in the Most Holy Trinity. Pope Francis continues telling us that mercy is God’s ultimate and supreme act in which God comes to meet us, it is the fundamental law that dwells in each heart and it connects God and man as hearts are opened by the hope of everlasting love despite our sinfulness.
Pope Francis calls us to recognise and live the season of Lent in this Jubilee year with greater intensity and to treat the season as a time to celebrate and experience God’s mercy. The Brisbane South Deanery, in listening to this call, will pilgrimage to Parishes in the Deanery every Thursday evening during the season of Lent 2016.
ADVENT REFLECTION The first part of today’s Gospel describes the result of John the Baptist’s exhortation. And when all the people asked what they should do, the answer is to share with the poor. This ascetic from the desert gives practical advice for daily life: treat all fairly and honestly. How may honest persons can one meet in a day’s dealings? The lack of honesty in every sphere of life contrasts with the brutal honesty of the Baptist in the second part of the Gospel.
The Welcoming Committee would like to thank all parishioners who have assisted with Cuppa Tea Weekend, as well as either helping or providing food for other Parish events throughout this year. It has been greatly appreciated.
Following our recent meeting, we are now planning for 2016.
The Our Lady of Lourdes Feast Day will be celebrated on Friday, February 5, 2016 with Mass at 7.00pm. The Archbishop will celebrate Mass. After Mass, supper will be served in the Jacaranda Room and it would be appreciated if parishioners could bring finger food, e.g. spring rolls, mini quiches, sandwiches, or sweet treats, including slices, muffins, cupcakes, pikelets etc. Tea, coffee and cordial will be served.
Faith 16 will be celebrated in the Deanery. March 18, 2016 Archbishop Coleridge will be presenting “Mercy in Luke” at Our Lady of Lourdes Church from 7.00 - 8.30pm. All Parishioners are invited to attend and supper will be served. Additional information to be provided in 2016.
The First Cuppa Tea Weekend for 2016 will be held on Saturday, February 6 and Sunday February 7, 2016 at the usual Masses. Tea, coffee, cordial and biscuits are offered after each Mass. We encourage all parishioners to stay and have a cuppa after Mass.
