VLSFO-compliant fuel

oVerView oF tHe Fuel types starting in 2020

HsFoHeavy fuel oil has asulphur content of 3.5per cent. According toIMO2020, these ships willonly be allowed to use thisfuel if they have an exhaustgas cleaning system.

VlsFo This fuel has a sulphurcontent of 0.5 per centand is thus IMO2020-compliant. A majorityof the ships will runon VLSFO startingJanuary 2020.

ulsFo Fuel with a sulphurcontent of 0.1 percent will be used incoastal emissioncontrol areas (ECAs) –and this has beendone since 2015.

lsdoGas oil is IMO2020-compliant, however itis also very expensive. This is used as a backupfor ports where nolow-sulphur fuels areavailable.

lng Liquefied natural gas is not only low-sulphur,it also drasticallyreduces emissions. This fuel thus goesabove and beyondIMO2020.

worldwideStarting in 2020, only fuels with asulphur content of 0.5 or lower areallowed – with the exception of shipswith EGCS.

But not all ships run on low-sulphur fuels; ships of the “Hamburg Express”class have been outfitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS) sinceMarch 2019. Next year, Hapag-Lloyd will be converting the “Sajir” to liquefiednatural gas (LNG). This is a pilot project for the entire industry, as it will be thefirst container ship to be converted.

Fleets by Fuel typeStarting in 2020, the Hapag-Lloyd fleet will bunker upon three different kinds of IMO-compliance

LNG – liquefied natural gas

How tHe exHaust gascleaning system worksIn an open loop, seawateris pumped through theEGCS to desulphurise theship’s exhaust fumes andultimately drained backinto the sea. “Hybrid-ready” allows the systemto later be upgraded toa closed loop.
