TRANSCRIPT

Even found that the actual marking is

quick but the target setting and giving

feedback is very slow?

Ever think that the students do no

interact or engage with their targets?

The key I have found is ...

1. Prepare the targets before the marking starts2. Use conditioning formatting and ‘IF’ conditions in Excel or a spreadsheet3. Merge results and targets4. Make the students interact and engage with their targets.

1. Prepare the targets before the marking starts

Prepare targets based on what you expect at each question and each point of the marking.

These can be derived from:

•Mark schemes: Level 1 shows ... To reach level 2, you need to ...•Examiners’ reports: very valuable to knowing how to distinguish between weak and strong candidates•Professional judgment: such as target sheets, prior knowledge•Level/Grade descriptors

2. Use conditioning formatting and ‘IF’ conditions in Excel or a spreadsheet

Most people have used excel ‘IF’ function for electronically producing the grade in a n adjacent cell:

=IF(BOX 1<43%, "U", IF(BOX 1<50%, "E", IF(BOX 1<60%, "D", IF(BOX 1<70%, "C", IF(BOX 1<80%, "B", "A")))))

2. Use conditioning formatting and ‘IF’ conditions in Excel or a spreadsheetThese ‘IF’ conditions can also be used to generate targets for each question and each mark at that question

=IF(CD10<51%,"Questionnaires are exact and can be repeated exactly, whereas interviews may be adapted to suit the person.",IF(CD10=100%,"Well done on being able to compare different research methods. Now make sure that you can compare different sampling methods and research designs."))

2. Use conditioning formatting and ‘IF’ conditions in Excel or a spreadsheet

These ‘IF’ conditions can also be used to generate targets for each question and each mark at that question

=IF(CD10<51%,"Questionnaires are exact and can be repeated exactly, whereas interviews may be adapted to suit the person.",IF(CD10=100%,"Well done on being able to compare different research methods. Now make sure that you can compare different sampling methods and research designs."))

3. Merge results and targets

Using a mail merge document, a considerable amount of detail can be given individually to students and/or parents

4. Make the students interact and engage with their targets.Students are given that feedback and asked to do a range of tasks based on the feedback given to them:•Strengths•Weaknesses•Targets•How to answer the exam•Mean, median, modes

4. Make the students interact and engage with their targets.Encouraging the students to engage with their achievement over the exam, such as by drawing a scattergraph and trend line for their performance, helps to make them have an insight in HOW they will tackle each paper.
