My Dear Parishioners,
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus contrasts the scribes with the poor widow. The
scribes were very proud and selfish with everything because they did not trust God.
The poor widow was humble because she trusted God and believed that God would
provide. Due to our fallen human nature, our pride can influence us to not trust and to
be selfish.
Unfortunately, this attitude is the result of some bad experiences. Sometimes
we become hurt and angry when no one appreciates the good we do to help
others. Sometimes we have been hurt by criticism or when our motives have been
misinterpreted. With God we can begin to heal from these hurts. First, let us ask God
to purify our hearts so that we turn from within to turning toward God, trusting that He
will help us. It takes patience and time as well as faith and trust in God. Little by little,
let us seek to do God’s will, to please Him, and not do things only to please others.
God wants to give us His grace to give us the confidence that the widow had, not the
puffed up pride of the scribes. Here is a prayer, attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola
and which is part of Ignatian spirituality, that we might pray to assist us in growth of
humility, trust, and faith in God.
Prayer for Generosity
Lord, teach me to be generous,
to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to look for any reward,
save that of knowing that I do your holy will.
Let us continue to give thanks to God from Whom all blessings flow.
In Christ,Fr. Guadagnoli

Guadagnoli
