Dear Parishioners,

One year ago today, Bishop Edward Burns ordained me and four other men—Fr. James Dorman (St.

Thomas Aquinas, Dallas), Fr. Stephen Ingram (Prince of Peace, Plano), Fr. Michal Markiewicz (St. Rita, Dallas),

and Fr. Giuseppe Spoto (Mary Immaculate, Farmers Branch)—to the priesthood.

Truth be told, this past year has not been easy. Self-inflicted scandals, painful media coverage, and an

atmosphere of shame weigh down the spirits of all the faithful—lay and clergy alike. Entrusted with the

pastoral and paternal care of this parish, know that Fr. Guadagnoli and I daily pray for you all in the midst of

these storms.

In response to those prayers, and in celebration of Christ’s gift of the priesthood, I want to use my

anniversary to remind us all of the unconquerable truth of the Gospel: Jesus Christ defeated death and offers

us eternal life. We are and we remain Catholic because the risen Jesus built his Church on the foundation of

the 12 Apostles in order to help us reach eternal life (cf. the second reading today: “The wall of the city had

twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve apostles of

the Lamb.”). We are and we remain Catholic because the Holy Spirit guides and teaches the Church of Christ

through scandals, wars, plagues, governments, and cultures until Christ himself comes again.

What’s more, there remain abundant signs of the Holy Spirit’s presence through, with, and in the Church!

For example, in my first year of priestly ministry at Saint Monica’s I have celebrated:

• 33 baptisms

• 29 confirmations

• 36 weddings

• 572 Masses (yes, I counted)

• Nearly 250 hours in the confessional

• 1 delicious “barbecue dinner with Fr. Wade” auction item from our school gala

Brothers and sisters, each and every one of us—myself included—has to bring the sufferings and spiritual

crises of the past year to Christ in prayer. However, I also hope that we can hearken to Jesus’ words in today’s

Gospel: “The Advocate, the holy Spirit that the Father will send in my name—he will teach you everything and

remind you of all that I told you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it

to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid…” May God bless you all!

Fr. Wade

Mission Statement We, the people of St. Monica Catholic Church, are called through Baptism to

celebrate the presence of Jesus Christ in Word and Sacrament. In becoming what we receive, we are sent in peace to glorify the Lord by sharing our gifts in service to others and by inviting all into a deeper relationship with Christ. Inspired by our

patroness, St. Monica, we pray that all may become children of heaven.

ADULTOS EVANGELIZANDO

ADULTOS

Cristo mismo vuelva otra vez.
