My Dear Parishioners,

“Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” is the theme for Catholic Schools Week this year

(Jan. 27—Feb. 2, 2018). As members of the Body of Christ, we, as the Catholic Church, have a unique

opportunity to transmit our faith and values to our children within our parishes and communities

particularly through our Catholic School system. There are many who have continued to benefit

directly through Catholic School education. Nationally and internationally the influence of a Catholic

School education has made a positive difference in the lives of others throughout the world.

Primarily, a Catholic education is about teaching our faith to our students and helping them to use

the tools necessary to live this faith. As this faith grows and as our students learn to incorporate this

faith in their daily lives, they continue to spread the Good News of the Kingdom of God. Catholic

Schools therefore must be places that create a “special atmosphere animated by the Gospel spirit of

freedom and charity, to help youth grow according to the new creatures they were made through

baptism as they develop their own personalities, and finally to order the whole of human culture to

the news of salvation so that the knowledge the students gradually acquire of the world, life and man

is illumined by faith. (#8, Gravissimum Educationis, Declaration on Christian Education, Pope St. Paul

VI, 1965)

I encourage you to visit your local Catholic School, especially St. Monica Catholic School. As

you visit our parochial school, you will encounter a spirit of learning and charity, “an atmosphere

animated by the Gospel” that influences all connected with our school. I am proud of our children,

our families, our principal, our teachers, and our staff! I want to thank all who give of their time,

talent, and treasure to support and maintain our parish school. Let us together promote Catholic

Education especially by promoting our Catholic Schools!

February 2nd is observed as World Day for Consecrated Life. Its purpose is “to help the entire

Church to esteem ever more greatly the witness of those persons who have chosen to follow

Christ by means of the practice of the evangelical counsels” as well as “to be a suitable occasion for

consecrated persons to renew their commitment and rekindle the fervor which should inspire their

offering of themselves to the Lord (Pope St. John Paul II, 1997). This celebration is attached to the

Feast of the Presentation of the Lord on February 2nd. This Feast is also known as Candlemas Day;

the day on which candles are blessed symbolizing Christ who is the light of the world. So too, those in

consecrated life are called to reflect the light of Jesus Christ to all peoples. World Day for Consecrated

Life will be celebrated in parishes on the weekend of February 2-3, 2019. Please pray for all those

who have made commitments in the consecrated life, and be sure to thank them on their special

day. May they continue to be inspired by Jesus Christ and respond generously to God’s gift of their

vocation.

The Blessing of Candles will take place on “Candlemas Day,” Saturday February 2nd, the Feast of

The Presentation of Our Lord. Please bring your candles to be blessed at Mass on February 2nd. The

Blessing of Throats will take place in church on Sunday February 3rd, the Feast of St. Blaise, at the

Masses.

In Christ,Fr. Guadagnoli

2019 Coffee & Donuts Sign Ups A reminder to all St. Monica ministry leaders that this year the focus will be on our Coffee & Donuts to showcase ministries. There will not be a Ministry Fair in 2019. Ministries are encouraged to sign up to host the Coffee & Donuts. This provides each ministry the opportunity to share information with parishioners and focus solely on individual ministries. Please consider how this will benefit your ministry in 2019, and look ahead on when you can sign up for the Coffee & Donuts. For questions, please contact Patti Patak at [email protected], 214-695-4541 or Maria Juarez-Plank at [email protected].________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

There are still open dates for any ministry that would like to help. Please sign up by visiting st.monicachurch.org, under Faith Formation and RCIA. For any questions contact Maria M. Praying, Fasting, & Almsgiving

Lent brings us face to face with reality. The reality that we need a

calling us to conversion.

St. Monica invites you to join us this Lent as we unlock the graces of

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do we need this campaign? Our school building has not received significant updates in decades. Unfortunately, the infrastructure connues to worsen and the cost to repair it will only get more expensive over me. Thus, St. Monica leadership determined it is in the best interest of our parish community to address renovaons now. Our priority in this campaign is not to significantly increase school enrollment, but to ensure that our students have a safe, secure, comfortable and innovave learning environment. How does this campaign benefit the entire St. Monica community? The project will give us room; provide us with breathing space. We oen struggle to accommodate meeng requests for various parish ministries. Moving the preschool to McManus Hall, allows us to convert the exisng preschool classrooms and offices in the Family Center to standard meeng rooms for use throughout the day and evening. We gain four rooms to accommodate large groups of people and two smaller rooms suitable for more inmate groups. What is the timeline? How soon can we start? The ming of construcon and renovaon will be dependent on funds raised and cash on hand. We are meeng with the contractors at the end of the month to determine if any work can begin in summer 2019, but the bulk of the construcon will likely occur in summer 2020. Construcon will be completed over the summer, so the projects will not impact our school calendar. The contractors selected for this project are familiar and comfortable working with schools and in a limited meframe. What happens if we do not reach our goal? The plan is set-up with mulple projects to ensure you know exactly what will be addressed as we work towards our overall goal. We will not take on any projects that we cannot afford or incur debt to complete the project. How can I participate? Can I pledge over time? Our campaign offers a wide range of gi opportunies to parcipate at all levels. You may choose a plan that provides you with both flexibility and me to complete the payment of your pledge. How was a pledge amount determined? We used a number of factors for seng request amounts: giving history to the parish and the school, past campaign support and the number shared in the planning study, if you parcipated. The gi request amount included in your leer is not an expectaon, but an invitaon. We encourage you to prayerfully consider your pledge and determine a gi amount that is sacrificial and meaningful to you. We are grateful for every gi, no maer the amount.

Thank you for being a special part of our faith community. This is an exciting time in the life of our parish as we launch our capital campaign. This theme focuses on our community, which is grounded in our faith tradition. We belong to a parish that is alive in action and spirit, thriving and growing thanks to our love for one another and our desire to follow the teachings of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

To ensure we continue along this path, leadership identified several capital needs which we must address in our parish school. A successful We Are St. Monica – A Legacy of Faith campaign will ensure we can provide a safe, secure and innovative environment for our school, so that we may continue to educate our students in the Catholic faith.

Guadagnoli
