Students do not need any previous music training—instead, you will use an older tuning system that allows a novice to play the main 3 chords of most popular tunes with one or two fingers. MUSIC FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEADCEL 334 9FThis continuing education course is designed to explore how great composers have approached the experience of loss through death, and have used music to proclaim their beliefs and achieve acceptance and resolution. Mozart, Verdi, Brahmas, and Mahler will be covered in this course. Topics include short biographies of the composers, discussion of their work structure, comparing their works from psychological, emotional, and religious points, and listening to and observing recordings of their works with pertinent commentary. TRAVEL PHOTOGRAPHYCEL 314 9FThis continuing education course is designed to introduce students to the best practices in Travel Photography. Topics will include preparing equipment for travel, compositional techniques, and tips on shooting various situations they may encounter while traveling, such as landscapes, festivals, architecture, and people. Students will be given the opportunity to share photos and travel stories from places they have already traveled to. Additionally, students will expand their knowledge of techniques for shooting digitally and working with digital images. MARYLAND IN THE CIVIL WARCEL 181 9FThis continuing education course will explore the role Maryland played in the Civil War. From attempts to secede
from the Union, to battlefield action, Maryland was a critical border state. Students will explore this history and the social causes that exploded during that time. Emphasis will be on the part played by Eastern Shore citizens and Maryland’s evolution from a slavery-based economy. A general familiarity with Civil War history is desired, but not required. ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS
KATHERINE BARNEY is the co-author of The Best of Newport; author of Annapolis: The Guide Book, Eastern Shore of Maryland: The Guide Book, God’s Bounty, Chesapeake’s Bounty, Chesapeake’s Bounty II, New England’s Bounty, Nantucket’s Bounty, Maryland’s Western Shore: The Guidebook and several publications on the fiber-optic telecommunications business. She is also a consultant on international business and protocol. Her hobbies include gourmet cooking, fine wines, history, sailing, genealogy, gardening, theology, and travel.
LARRY BLOUNT began “retirement” in 1998 after a 30-year dual career in administrative, planning, and policy assignments with the U.S. Public Health Service and as a civil affairs officer with the Army/Army Reserve. He has a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in anthropology. His interests include lifelong learning, walking, sailing, boating, skiing, travel, and photography.
SUSAN CLAGGETT is a USPTR and USPTA professional certified, and has been teaching tennis on the Eastern Shore for 25 years and loves it!! Susan teaches all facets of the game from beginner rallying to competitive doubles play. She competes regularly in Maryland USTA leagues and is a professional tennis coach at the YMCA, Easton where she runs the junior tennis program and adult cardio tennis classes.
REV. MARK DELCUZE is an Episcopal priest currently serving as a Rector of Christ Church Parish, Kent Island. He holds a B.A. (with Distinction) from the University of Virginia and an M. Div. from the Episcopal Divinity School (Cambridge, MA). In 33 years of ordained life he has served as Ecumenical Officer for two dioceses, has been a three-time deputy to his denomination’s General Convention has served as Vice President of Diocesan Council for the Diocese in Easton.
MICHELLE FOLLETT is a teacher of textile arts. After finishing a career that included instructional design for a software development company, Michelle pursued building her background knowledge in textile weaving in order to become a textile arts teacher. Michelle holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Education from Illinois Benedictine University, and is a Master Weaver candidate for Olds College in Alberta, Canada. Michelle is a proponent of learning by seeing, doing and teaching, and looks forward to sharing her enthusiasm of learning with you.
TEDDY GRIFFIN has a degree in Computer Science from the University of Maryland and spent over 30 years in Application and System programming. After retirement, she has enjoyed making jewelry and is eager to share that passion with others.
NANCY HESSER (Ph.D., Comparative Literature), has taught at universities in the US, DR Congo, and Mali. Since settling in Dorchester County, she has conducted a variety of lifelong learning courses on the Eastern Shore, focusing on short stories and exploring such topics as American regionalism, the Roaring 20s, contemporary African voices, Central American and Caribbean literature, ghost stories, and flash fiction. She enjoys walking in the marshlands with her husband and canine companions.
PHILIP HESSER has taught in the US and Africa and served with the UNHCR and the Academy for Educational Development. He has taught at Salisbury University and Wor-Wic Community College, and can be found running the Dorchester marshes with his retriever, Marshall, and hound, Bayly. Indulging his interests at the intersection of landscape, life & livelihood in Delmarva and on the Bay, he wrote What a River Says: Exploring the Blackwater River and Refuge (Cambridge: Friends of Blackwater, 2014) and is at work on The Old Home is Not There: The Native Land of Harriet Tubman.
TYRELL JAMES has an extensive background in health and fitness. He is a certified boxing coach under USA Boxing, a personal trainer, a clinical weight loss coach, a master herbalist, and nutritionist.
STEVE KINLOCK has earned graduate degrees in psychology, education and history and has over 30 years of teaching experience at the high school and college level. He has also served in elected office.
PATRICIA LANG is an experienced, local artist. Her career expands five decades and includes numerous awards and exhibitions. Pat is a member of Working Artists Forum, a non-profit organization of professional artists who are juried into membership. Pat serves this organization as Publicity Chairperson, Co-editor of the WAF newsletter, and sub-webmaster for the website. She is also the 2016 Chairperson for Local Color, an art show open to professional Delmarva artists held during Plein Air Easton. She has taught for several years in the IAL program, as well as previously from her studio.
KATHY LEARY is a certified Zumba Gold instructor. She has been participating in Zumba classes since 2010, and has been teaching Zumba Gold at Martinak State Park and Chesapeake College since obtaining her Zumba Gold certification in July, 2017. Kathy is also a dancer in Maxine Wixom’s dance group “Showtime Dancers” that performs in shows in nursing homes and senior centers in Easton and Cambridge.
CANDACE LICCIONE is the owner of Wye River Designs—a creativity and wellness studio—in Grasonville for the past 15 years. Wye River Designs features classes in mosaics, collage, mixed media, and jewelry making. Before she moved to the Eastern Shore, she had an herb business called The Herbal Sanctuary in Royersford, PA. Designs combines her love of arts and crafts and wellness. Wye River Designs also offers over 200 kinds of medicinal herbs, teas, and aromatherapy and wellness classes.
BOB MILLER is a retired science teacher with a 35+ year passion for photography. He does all kinds of photography but has recently specialized in nature photography. He has taken his camera all over the world including Africa, Iceland, The Antarctic, The Arctic, Australia, Europe, Brazil, and our United States. He has won many awards and was recently named Digital Photographer of the Year by the Arundel Camera Club. His photographs have been published in Galapagos calendars, Save the Bay, Backyard Gardens, and most recently in the fine art photography magazine, B&W. Bob enjoys teaching and loves to share his love for photography with others.
MARK NIEDERHAUSER has been practicing/teaching in the martial arts for over 25 years. He often travels to Utah and Wyoming to further his education in the arts, specifically the art of Kenpo Karate. He is a member of the AKKI (American Kenpo Karate International).
ABBY OBER, a resident of St. Michaels, has a B. A. in Fine Art from Rollins College and has been teaching classes and workshops for all levels and abilities for over ten years. She has participated in numerous exhibitions in Pennsylvania and Maryland including the recent “Local Color” in Easton.
JANET O’CONNOR is a home cook and a wannabe Chef. While she had a 25-year career in banking, holiday cooking for family and friends started a lifetime of fun in the kitchen. She graduated from “The Enraged Chicken Restaurant Cooking School” in New Orleans to become one of its catering chefs. Back in Maryland, she began catering parties and weddings. Janet currently lives in Symphony Village in Centreville and lives out her chef-dream as she caters annual fundraiser events there. With volunteers from the community, lunches and galas of up to 200 people are served gourmet meals, sandwiches, and hors d’oeuvres.
CAROLINE PHILLIPS is a photographer and filmmaker from the Eastern Shore of Maryland. After studying Film and Media Arts at Messiah College, she quickly became involved on the Eastern Shore with photographers and filmmakers assisting them with shoots that have taken her to places like Hong Kong and Vancouver. Starting in 2016, she went off on her own, making documentary-style videos and photos. She currently operates Riverine Creative, a visual production company specializing in creating video content for local businesses and brands. When she isn’t filming, she’s taking photos for magazines such as Shore Monthly, Edible Delmarva, and Chesapeake Bay Magazine. Caroline currently lives in Kent Island with her dog, Phoebe, where they love to take walks along the water and snap photos of the Eastern Shore landscape.
BARBARA REISERT earned two Associate degrees in Liberal Arts and Business Administration at Des Moines Community College then moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland, established and ran a small Bed and Breakfast in Claiborne and created “The Claiborne Clarion”, a monthly newsletter for the residents of this friendly little village. Serving as both a student and facilitator at The Academy for Lifelong Learning along with being a board member for eight years filled my empty hours. Now living in Easton she just finished memoir number 300 and has written a book for her three grown children.
KAREN RITCHEY grew up in Frederick County, MD and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA in Political Science/Criminal Justice. She has worked for the State of Maryland-Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services for over 30 years. She is an avid traveler and always researching for the “next” trip even if it’s in her own backyard.
SUZANNE SANDERS earned a B.A. in Humanities from Johns Hopkins because, hey, somebody has to balance out all those pre-med students. She has worked as a journalist, bartender, poet, adviser, full-tilt mom, and Russian translator. At Jonas’ Attic, she showed how to have fun with metaphysics. She volunteers at the library and is working on a seemingly perennial novel. She lives in Easton with her husband. They are currently lacking in the kitten department. BILL SHEPARD is a retired career diplomat who served on U.S. diplomatic missions in Europe and Asia and served as a Consul General in Bordeaux. He is the author of many works. These include, “Maryland in the Civil War”, an e-book cited as source material by the Maryland Humanities Council, “Over There, A Doughboy in France, 1918”, the e-book, “The Great Detectives (From Vidocq to Sam Spade)”, and author of Shepard’s Guide to Mastering French Wines.
BEVERLY SMITH has been teaching for Chesapeake College’s IAL program since moving to Chestertown in January 2014, after a 40-year career as a professor of art history. She has continued a lifelong interest in what is going on now in art. Beverly has always found contemporary art to be an unending delight; it continues to challenge and excite her and she has always felt that way about talking with and telling others about art. She is also a practicing artist and has recently added acting and set painting to her resume.
RAYMOND VERGNE is a retired physician and educator that lives in Easton with his wife Anita. He is currently the secretary of the Board of Directors of the Mid Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and writes the program notes for the orchestra’s subscription concerts. As a former usher at the Casals Festival, he was once instructed to walk onstage before a recital and place sheet music on the piano, for which he received a thunderous ovation.
