TRULY MALAYSIAN PROJECT ~ lah ~

Which part of Malaysia I came from?

I, came from Mapai, which is located in Kanowit, Sibu, Sarawak.

It takes 45 minutes to reach the town by land transport and an hour by boat from Sibu. The main ethnic groups are Iban, Chinese, Malay & Melanau.

There is this one historical building that still remains in Kanowit, which is Fort Emma. Fort Emma is a fort built in 1859 by Rajah James Brooke, out of timber and bamboo. It was named after Emma Brooke, sister of Rajah Charles Brooke. The fort remains impressive, despite years of neglect. It is now open to the public as a museum.

Unique customs of the place

During Gawai Festival (known as the Harvesting Festival/Pesta Menuai), the Ibans will wear their traditional costumes as to maintain their traditional customs. There will also be a performance called ‘Ngajat’ alongside the musical instruments such as, ‘sape’ ‘gong’ and ‘gendang’. Not only that, they will also drink ‘tuak’, alcoholic beverage made of fermented rice, yeast and sugar.

When it comes to food, kanowit is famous for ‘Mee Kampua’, ‘Candut/Cendol’ and ‘Manuk Pansuh’.

Town I would share

I would share the town, Kanowit, because even though it has it’s own historical memory, I have not seen yet people would documenting the town.

Among all of the places, the town has a very strategic location because it is the centre point of Sibu.

Introduction of my place.

As I mentioned before, I came from a quite big village at Sg. Mapai. The village earned it’s name from the river itself, Mapai. Our main activities are farming, owning small stalls for self-business and hunting.
