TERM 3 Week 9

GOOD COUNSEL

PRIMARY SCHOOL

10TH SEPTEMBER, 2019

Dear Parents/Carers,

At the end of last week students in Year

3 & 5 received their NAPLAN results

from the testing that they completed back

in May. NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills

that are essential for every child to

progress through school and life, such as

Grammar & Punctuation, Numeracy,

Reading, Spelling and Writing. NAPLAN

is not a pass/fail test, but assesses

learning progress. At the classroom level

it is one of many important tools used by

teachers to measure student progress.

Each child’s achievements are compared

with the achievements of all students in

Australia not just within classes. The

results help us at school - to better

identify students who need extension or

additional support; identify and review

programs and support offered to

students and to set goals in Numeracy

and Literacy.

The great news story for Good Counsel

Primary School in 2019 is that our

students in Year 3 & 5 achieved above

the QLD State Mean and the Australian

Mean in all assessment areas. For those

who did not see some of the print media

releases we also ranked in the top 10 of

all primary schools in North Queensland.

The focus we have had at Good Counsel

Primary School for a number of years

has been on improved teaching and

learning combined with intervention

initiatives, additional school officer

support and extension groups is now

paying off.

THU 19 SEP PREP FAIRY TALE DAY

Congratulations to our students and

teachers for their efforts.

Next year, all Catholic Schools are

moving to NAPLAN online for elements of

the testing. This is both an exciting move

but one that requires much planning to

ensure our computer hardware and

connectivity is up to standard. A practise

test preparing for 2020 will take place in

some classes this week.

Last Wednesday, our Year 1 students

walked to Villanova Aged Care facility to

bring some smiles to the residents.

According to Mrs Guli and Mrs Slater the

residents absolutely loved having them

visit and were able to share stories of

how times have changed since they lived

in the ‘olden days’. Well done to all.

BIKE SAFETY NEXT WEEK

Wednesday 18 Sept Prep -

Yr 2 are being asked to bring

their bikes or scooters and

your letter as to storage of the bikes and

Adopt-a-Cop Constable Karl Ah Shay and

Mrs Ah Shay for all the organisation of

Student Council Seasons Prayer Assembly...

Thank you Josh, Bennet, Miriam, Alexis, Lachlan and Cooper for your

presentation. Apologies from Natasha and Isabella who were sitting their Music

Exam. There is a time, there is a reason. There is a time, for every season—

under heaven—Monica Brown.

Lord God, the seasons of the year are gifts to us and reflect back to us the cycle of

life. They help us to understand that life is full of many different experiences and in

all these times, you are present. Help us to value the differences and joys that can

be found in each season so that we may appreciate your wonderful gift to us.

Amen.

2DM Class Liturgy...

Thank you Fr Kerry for the celebration of 2DM’s class liturgy, in Mother of Good

Baby Book Chooks...

Children from across all year levels have

been getting to know Mrs Horsford’s Baby

Book Chooks. Classes can visit the library

and share their quiet reading books with a

Pekin chick on their lap. Pip, Clover, Paso

and Nutmeg really enjoy their snuggly

reading time and it’s clear to see the

students love it too!

Yr 1 Villanova Excursion...

Recently, Year Ones visited the residents of Villanova. As part of the History unit, "How times have

changed," the children eagerly listened to their elders as they shared experiences of how they lived 'in

the olden days.' Also, through the Social and Emotional Learning Program, the Year Ones have been

learning how to show empathy for others. This was such a lovely experience for the young and old

generation. Thank you Mrs Grace Slater and Mrs Lynne Guli for this annual excursion.
