living. Many positions at TUD require a Water Distribution, Water or Wastewater Treatment Certification issued by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB). Other positions in the Wastewater Department also

require specialized certifications. We’ve provided some helpful information below on how to obtain the required certification, and are happy to answer any questions about the process.

EXAM SCHEDULE

Water Treatment certification tests are held twice a year – in November and May. Water Distribution certification tests are held in March and September. Wastewater Treatment certification exams are held in April and October. Exam applications are available on the SWRCB website: https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/water_issues/programs/operator_certification/

WORK IN WATER

CERTIFICATION INFORMATIONTo obtain certification, you will need to attend a class, take an online class, or take a correspondence course in a specialized area of training. Various organizations offer courses that are accepted by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB).

WATER AND DISTRIBUTION

CERTIFICATION INFORMATIONThere are a number of different jobs in the wastewater field including Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators (maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment plants), Collection System Maintenance Technicians (sewer maintenance and repair), and Laboratory Analysts (testing water in the laboratory).

CORRESPONDENCE COURSESAll wastewater jobs require you to be certified. To become certified you must meet certain qualifications and pass a written test on technical knowledge in the field. Wastewater Treatment Certifications are processed through the SWRCB, and Collections Certifications are processed through the California Water Environment Association at:
