Mark 4:35-41

What‟s in Liquid Trust?◦ The natural hormone ocxytocin.

The hormone plays a significant role in childbirth, breastfeeding, & romantic love.

It appears that trusting people involves chemistry & biology.

◦ But, would you trust a company selling trust for $50 a bottle?

In tonight‟s text, the disciples fail to trust

Jesus.

vv 35-37

“On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, „Let us go

across to the other side.‟ And leaving the crowd, they took him with

them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.

And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the

boat, so that the boat was already filling” (vv 35-37,ESV).

While they were crossing the sea, a terrible storm arose & the boat

nearly sank.◦ “Great windstorm” refers to a furious storm, a hurricane, a squall.

◦ Sudden & terrible storms on the Sea of Galilee are well-known & well-

recorded from history.

Waves nearly swamp the boat.◦ The waves are certainly much taller than the boat.

◦ These experienced fishermen know they are doomed.

In the middle of all this, what is Jesus doing?◦ He‟s in the stern taking a nap on a cushion.

◦ He‟s taught all day & he‟s tired.

The fact that he is sleeping likely suggests that Jesus had no trust issues of his own.

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in

safety” (Ps 4:8, ESV).

If we had been on that boat, would we have trusted a sleeping Jesus?

vv 38-41

“He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and

said to him, „Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?‟ And he

awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, „Peace! Be still!‟

And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them,

„Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?‟ And they were

filled with great fear and said to one another, „Who then is this, that

even the wind and the sea obey him?‟” (vv 38-41, ESV).

The disciples wake Jesus & say, “Teacher, don‟t you care if we

drown?”◦ Imagine being in their shoes!

◦ They had seen Jesus perform miracle after miracle, but when they need him,

he‟s sleeping!!

Jesus stood up, rebuked the storm, & the winds died.◦ The Greek “rebuke” refers to a strong rebuke.

◦ The winds & the waves immediately stop.

Jesus then asks a tough question: “Why were you so afraid?”◦ The disciples had every reason to trust Jesus & not doubt.

Peter, Andrew, James, and John were with Jesus when he drove out an evil spirit in

the synagogue at Capernaum (Mk 1:21-28).

Those four were with Jesus when he healed Simon's mother-in-law (Mk 1:29-31).

Those four were with him when he healed many (Mk. 1:32-34).

Those four were with Jesus when he healed a man with leprosy (Mk. 1:40-45).

Those four were with Jesus when he healed a paralytic (Mk. 2:1-12).

◦ They had seen Jesus do so much, yet they doubted.

We have so many reasons to trust Jesus.◦ Others before us were able to trust him.

◦ He is trustworthy.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (Jn 14:6, ESV).

We can, therefore, believe every word he has spoken.

◦ He died for us.

Are we willing to trust Jesus?

What about you?
