COMPUTER COMPONENTS Ajay Jassi

Tower• The tower is very big case for the components to fit in for

protection and it is the main thing from the outside. Without the tower any computer wouldn’t be able to be powered.

Motherboard• The motherboard is the main feature of the computer

where all the other parts are connected to, without the motherboard you can not connect any of the components to the computer. The power supply transfers power all over the motherboard.

CPU• CPU is the processor and it depends on the GHz on the

processor to get a good speed computer.• CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.• The cpu gets secured in a bracket and then gets treated

with thermal compound to prevent it from overheating.

Heat-sink fan • A heat-sink fan gets placed on top of the cpu so that it

prevents the cpu and the other components from overheating.

• The heat sink forces air to the cpu.

RAM• The RAM stands for Random Access Memory, but best

known as computer memory and is used to store memory for the processors. The more ram is better because it allows more processes to run at the same time without the computer running slow.

• The ram gets clipped into the slot so it is secure so it wouldn’t fall out.

Hard Drive

• A hard drive also known as HDD and is used to store data and documents that you have saved on the computer.

• You can get HDD as giga bytes and tera bytes

Graphics Card• The graphic card is for the colour display on the computer

and therefore if there was no graphics card your computer wouldn’t turn up.

• They are also used to play new advance games.• The graphics card is the same thing as a video card,

which gives the computer the pixels and display for the computer.

• Another name is called the video card.

Sound Card• The sound card is the component which allows you to

plug in speakers to produce sound, or you can plug in headphones.

Mice

• It is a external component which you can get wired or wireless.

• The mouse is to move around the cursor you can click on things.

• Right click gets options for you to choose and left click is to open application and select an option.

USB Port

• There are many USB ports on the computer at least 4 at the back and at least 2 at the front in a newer modern computer.

• They are used to plug in external components such as printers, USB drives and other things.

• The USB port that is commonly used is USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 is isn’t used much.

HDMI Cable

• HDMI cable is a cable which converts the energy form the computer to the monitors, projectors and TVs.

• It’s the same thing as a scat lead besides this gives better quality and takes more giga bytes to transfer.

• Hdmi gives high definition quality to the pixels and images.

• Sound is transferred from this cable.

CD and DVD Drive• The Cd and Dvd drive is a way to put saved memory and

install games and applications from the cd/dvd.• A dvd can fit up to 8.5GB on a doubled layer disc.

Wherefore as a cd could only fit 712mb of space, but they are mostly used for mp3 file songs, and this will normally be able to fit about 350 songs.

Keyboard

• A keyboard is an external devices that can be wired or wireless.

• It is used to type letters and numbers on the computer and is also used for windows setup when you install the software.

• They are some tricks on the keyboard for short cuts and quicker ways of doing things.

Firewire• Firewire is a serial port that acts the same as USB and

was faster, but not anymore because USB version 3.0 is much quicker.

Ethernet cable

• The Ethernet cable is the cable connected to the internet modern and then connects to the computer to transfer the internet .

• They can also can be connected to more than one computer and by Wi-Fi.

• The Ethernet cable gets inserted into the NIC adapter to transfer the data.

Floppy Disk• Floppy disk are vey old devices that are used to store

data on to them.• Now days you can probably fit only about 12 photo files

on it.

USB• USB stands for Universal serial bus, the slandered USB is

2.0 that people use, but there is the latest USB 3.0 but that is very rare now but maybe in couple more years.

• It is used for memory stick and newer printers, keyboards and mice.

Power supplies

• It converts the AC which stands for Alternating-current power to came from the wall into the DC which stands for Direct- current.

• DC is required for all components in the motherboard.

• The power supply provides power to all the components.

Adapter cards• Adapter cards are cards that click in the motherboard and

reacts with the drivers.• Adapter card are sound cards , graphics card and more.

NIC• The NIC is a adapter card that enable you to connect the

internet by connecting an Ethernet cable

Wireless NIC• The wireless NIC is an adapter card that enables you to

connect to wireless networks and servers.

Sata cable• Sata cables are used to connect hard drives (HDD) to the

motherboard.

Pata cable• Pata cables are used to connect external drives in the

front bay of computer.• Not all computers have a front bay.

Vga cable • Vga cable is used to connect monitors, projectors and

TVs to the computer for display. No sound can be produced with this cable.

Berg • Berg cables are used to connect floppy disk drives, and

other drives in the front bay with a 4-pin connector.• These cables are rarely used now, as floppy disks are no

longer being used.
