How to be golden with Golden Key

]

By now, most of you have made plans for the summer. You have an internship, you are going home to

lifeguard, you are traveling abroad. These are all good plans, but I have a challenge for you. You are

intelligent (thus, you are a member of Golden Key), and you are developing that intelligence as a

student at the University of Michigan. Part of the UM mission statement is “To serve the people of

Michigan and the world…in developing leaders and citizens who challenge the present and enrich the

future”. This summer, I challenge you to internalize that mission and be that citizen/leader that

challenges an unjust situation and does something to make it better. Make the commitment to give of

yourself to others who are less fortunate. No matter how busy you think your summer is, you can find

some type of volunteer experience to fit your schedule. There are many ways to get connected: your

place of worship, the United Way, or go on-line - websites such as VolunteerMatch

(http://www.volunteermatch.org/) or SERVEnet (http://www.servenet.org/) can help connect you with

volunteer opportunities in you area. So, don’t have just a busy summer; bring some depth to it by using

the skills you have developed as a UM student to make a difference in the lives of others.
