Unlocking our Coastal Heritage
Discovery Point – Peverill Point
In the Middle of 2011 Coastwatch Swanage, and Sally Maltby, a
Coastwatch member, formulated the idea for an interpretation
centre using empty buildings at Peveril Point. They duly applied
for funding for the amount of £9,500 and were pleased to be able
to acquire the whole amount, from SW Coast Path, Dorset
AONB, Jurassic Coast and de Moulham trust.
Fortunately Sally Maltby is a graphic designer and agreed to donate her professional fees
– in excess of £20,000. Other members of Coastwatch have been very forthcoming with
images, advice and answers to various research questions. Swanage Town Council who
own the buildings have agreed to maintain their upkeep and insurance of the buildings.
Design and research of the boards was finished, and again we had valuable experience
from various people for proof reading. There has been enthusiastic approval of the
designs from many people. Messrs Heirographics of Wareham printed and installed the
boards prior to the opening.
The centre was opened with appropriate publicity on 5th April 2012 and we invited the
press with all funders and other appropriate personnel. This occasion was catered.
Coastwatch Swanage agreed to fund some flyers which were distributed widely.
