Short rise time to keepPS bunch structure

Present kicker rise timeis more than 220 ns

Shorter rise time will beobtained by:- larger magnet impedance- shorter magnets

But:- extra magnets to have sufficient strength

Tighter !!

In this case MKP4has to produce amaximum pulselength of 2.1 µs instead of 10.5 µs

Comparison of Old and NewSystem

l Old System» 6 PFNs

» 8 S-type modules, 12.5 Ω» 4 L-type modules, 12.5 Ω

» 1 spare tank (L*), 4 modules

l New System» 8 PFNs» possibly 6 PFLs

» 12 S-type modules, 16.67 Ω» 4 L-type modules, 12.5 Ω

» 3 different spare tanks: 11 modules

page 10Jan Uythoven SL/BT. Group meeting 9 Nov. ‘99

Status of the MKP PFNsl 1.5 m long test coil made. Impedance checked: within 1 %.

l One PFN assembled with this test coil. Low voltagemeasurements with low power switch.

l Comparison of measurements and calculations» HV measurement of MKA switch characteristics ->

adaptation of the low power switch

» Adaptation of front cells

l Coming soon:» High voltage tests with this PFN» Adaptation of the front cells» Long coils, three different diameters to compensate

for resistive losses

l Still a lot of work to do!

page 11Jan Uythoven SL/BT. Group meeting 9 Nov. ‘99

Status of the MKP magnets I

page 12Jan Uythoven SL/BT. Group meeting 9 Nov. ‘99

Status of the MKP magnets II

l One prototype S-type magnet finished» High voltage measurement with PFL in air» Fast inductive and capacitive probes developed» Will have to be disassembled and modified for final version

l First ‘LS magnet’ should be under vacuum in 4 weeks time» Damping resistors

» Incorporated magnetic field probes →» Outgassing tests of ferrites

l New baseplates, frames etc.

l Production of second LS module started

l Series started, another 18 magnets to go!

page 13Jan Uythoven SL/BT. Group meeting 9 Nov. ‘99

Magnetic field probes

l Fast risetime and small ripple of magnetic fieldrequired

l New probes developed to measure this accurately» Inductive probe (two shielded coax cables) in the aperture:

most accurate, but can’t install this in the machine

» Capacitive pick-ups incorporated in the earth connectionplates

– Stays in the machine to check magnet and PFNs– Calibrated with inductive pick-ups

Work in the coming Shutdownsl Shutdown ’99 - 2000

» Install 6 new RG cables tunnel» Prepare electronic racks and cabling BA1» MDPH replaced by MDSH: stronger, final position, new pc

l Shutdown 2000 - 2001» Upgrade of all electronics and new Faraday cage

» Installation of 3 new kicker tanks (S-modules)» Modification 6 PFNs

l Shutdown 2001 - 2002» Replacement of 1 kicker tank (L-modules)

» Modification of 2 PFNs
