INTRODUCTIONTamil Nadu has a distinctive tradition in fine arts and exquisite crafts

To develop the arts and crafts and to conserve them it is important that the artisans themselves are involved in marketing of their products, thus they get good market linkages and are exposed to the needs of different customers.

INTRODUCTION

‘Haat’ means a market, especially one held on a regular basis in a rural area.

The idea of urban haat is to provide a platform for the artisans to sell their products,

it also provides the ambience of a traditional Rural Haat or village market, but one suited for more contemporary needs.

AIM:

To create a platform for the artisans to sell their products and to provide an experience of the rural markets to the visitors

OBJECTIVE: •To provide opportunities for the artisans themselves to market their products, meet their fellow artisans and understand the contemporary needs and thus ensuring conservation of arts and crafts.

•To create an environment of rural markets which the artisans would feel comfortable and the visitors get a new experience

•To improve the productivity and the quality of handicrafts produced ad enhance the innovation in design

SCOPE:The urban haat provides an opportunity for the artisans to develop their skills and also ensures economic benefits for them; helps conserve the arts and skills and market them.

PROPOSAL:By Tamil nadu handicrafts Development Corporation, funded by both the state and central government

SITE:

•Located @ Kanyakumari, near the light house – under public works department and allocated for the haat by the state

•Site extent -12.35 acres

•Situated among the major tourist hub in the city surrounded by hotels and lies opposite to the light house

PROPOSED DEVELOPMENTS:

•Office •Store•Exhibition halls•Permanent shops- poomphuar showroom•Art gallery•Temporary stalls •Conference room•Food court•Restaurant and cafe•Dormitories •Auditorium •Open air theatre
