Central New York Sea Scout Rega�a, August 9 - 11, 2019 A Central New York Sea Scout Rega+a, the fourth to be hosted by Ship 876 at Onondaga Yacht Club, will be held
on August 9—11. Sea Scouts from Central New York and Pennsylvania will be a+ending. The Sea Scouts will be
camping around the flag pole, racing our small boats, and par6cipa6ng in a cooking compe66on. This event is an
opportunity for Sea Scouts throughout our area to learn to sail and race small sailboats, which many Sea Scout
Ships do not have the opportunity to sail, and our scouts in Ship 876 will serve as mentors.
We are looking for OYC volunteers to prepare and serve breakfast on Saturday, August 10 (pancakes, bacon,
juice) from 6:30 to 8:30 am, and
lunch (hot dogs, buns, chips, cole-
slaw, macaroni salad) 11 am-12:30 pm Saturday, to
serve as judges for the ‘Cook off Challenge”, to
serve as race commi+ee for the rega+a and in as-
sis6ng with boat launching and retrieving, and to
assist with purchasing the food and supplies for
the meals. A sign-up sheet will be posted at
the club.
Welcome New Members! A hearty welcome to our new members:
Eric and Michele Cabeen and their three young children are in the pro-
cess of relocating from Florida to Baldwinsville. Tom Winans, a Ph.D.
student in Microbiology at Upstate, and an experienced sailor, has
joined as a student member. Eric and new members Mary and Tom
O’Neil are participating in Sailing School.

There are s6ll many Sunday dinners for everyone to
enjoy - covered dish, catered meals, pizza night, steak
dinner and more. Thank you to those who have al-
ready hosted or made a major effort in ordering or pre-
paring the meal or social event in May and June: Tom
Ogden, Sandy Parker, Chad Harper, Tess Freedman, Jan
and Bill Beall, Holly Ioset, Lisa Notar, Tom and Mary
O'Neil, Lou Levine, Melinda and Mike Kernan, Melissa
Sieling, Becca Maurer, and to all others who have
helped in any way. With everyone pitching in at differ-
ent 6mes, it makes for an easier 6me for set-up and
clean-up. Sign up sheets are on the sign-in board. If
you have a food allergy, let Diane know and we will post
it by the sign-up board so members can be aware of this
concern.
Please save the pull tabs from cans for the
Shriners. The plas6c jar is by the microwave.
If you are a fairly new or new member of the yacht
club and are sailing as crew or skipper, you may be
awarded the Knowlton Trophy. Every 6me you crew or
are a skipper, you get a point and at the end of the year
someone will be awarded a pain6ng to have for a year
and your name on the Knowlton Trophy.

We had a great turnout as members joined in at the “Opening Work Party” on a
cold, wet April 27th. In May, we enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo Dinner, Hot Stove Par-
ty, and Memorial Day Picnic. June featured our 2nd annual Salad Spectacular, a
fabulous Commodore’s SpagheJ Dinner prepared by Melinda and Mike Kernan,
and a Summer SailsKce Wine TasKng with Melissa and Bill Sieling’s original music.
At our 2019 Commissioning Ceremony May 19, our Sea Scouts raised our flags and burgee. Commodore Lou Levine
declared Onondaga Yacht Club “in commission”, as our Past Commodores stood at a+en6on. Garry Klink was our mas-
ter of ceremonies, Gail Riina delivered a moving sailors’ blessing, and our cannoneer Brian Colvin fired the cannon. We
all enjoyed a delicious catered dinner, where we celebrated Phil and Virgie Klink’s 65th wedding anniversary.

OYC HUNTER SAILBOAT—by Bill Pease
OYC has a variety of watercraQ available
for the use and enjoyment of our mem-
bers. One is our 22 foot Hunter sailboat
for those who enjoy sailing but not
geOng wet! This is a fully ballasted, self-
righ6ng boat which means that, aside
from a hurricane or tornado, it will not
capsize. It has an enclosed cabin and a
comfortable cockpit with all sail controls
at the cockpit. The (new!) mainsail is raised and lowered from
the cockpit. The (new!) furling genoa jib is unfurled and furled
from the cockpit. The (new!) 6 h.p. outboard engine starts
easily and runs dependably. The boat is docked so it does not
have to be launched and then hauled back out every 6me it’s
sailed. Very quick and easy to use.
Because this boat is used by a limited number of authorized
members, the goal is for it to be self-sustaining. Docking fees,
insurance and other costs are shared by the ‘Hunter Consor6-
um’ members. Currently that amounts to a seasonal charge
of $175. While that’s not peanuts, compare that annual rate
to the cost of ren6ng a similarly sized boat elsewhere for a
half day. It’s a GOOD DEAL!
I am available to take members, whether interested in join-
ing or not, out for a sail at our mutual convenience. It gives
me a chance to get out on the water and you a chance to
enjoy sailing on the boat and geOng a feel for it if you are
interested in possibly joining. If not, we’ll just have a nice sail.

Member CauKon: Newly Introduced
BoaKng Hazards in Onondaga Lake —by Herb Schrayshuen
Boa6ng is well underway and the NYS Parks Department
has placed buoys near the newly introduced naviga6on haz-
ards that were constructed in the lake as part of the lake re-
media6on process. Over the past winter members of the OYC
have been par6cipa6ng in mee6ngs and advoca6ng for the
placement of buoys to provide boaters with clear loca6ons for
the structures. At mee6ngs last year and this year the Trus-
tees of the Remedia6on Project (NYS Department of Environ-
mental Conserva6on and US Fish and Wildlife Service) have
been holding mee6ngs seeking public input on the project.
A number of phases of the project have been completed
and a number are ongoing. Among the completed projects is
the installa6on of fish habitat structures in the Lake. Some of
these structures have been in place since 2017. The Trustees
of the project arranged the placement of hazard mark buoys
by the NYS Department of Parks in loca6ons where these
structures come near to the surface or above the surface at
6mes of low lake levels. There are over 1100 structures of
various types that have been introduced to our lake and have
not been marked. Not all of these structures require marking
due to their depth. But even at depth, some of these struc-
tures can pose a risk to anyone anchoring. A number of the
rock filled crib type structures are located in the area off of
the Amphitheater where many of our members go to listen to
concerts.
The NYS DEC has provided a new Lake Chart showing the
loca6on of the buoys shown on the following page and posted
on the bulle6n board in the OYC clubhouse, along with loca-
6ons of some of the structures in Maple Bay and the amphi-
theater vicinity obtained from the remedia6on project man-
agers. While these charts are unsuitable for naviga6on, and
it may take some 6me before we see an actual revised lake
chart, we want to make our members aware of the hazards
and the new buoys.
Summer SailsKce Wine TasKng We had a great turnout for our “Summer Sails6ce” Wine
Tas6ng on June 22, hosted Melissa Sieling and Becca Maurer.
Melissa and Bill Sieling and Paul Powers entertained us with
live music, including original composi6ons, on a variety of in-
struments. The judge for the tas6ng was Tony Guarnieri, from
Verona, a winemaker and wine connoisseur, a Sielings’ family
friend and fellow ukulele player. Ro Cabrey won for Best Red
with Sycamore Lane Merlot, California, Tess Freedman won for
Best White with Wine Sisterhood Magical Moscato, California,
paired with honey goat cheese. The Best Homemade Wine
award went to Pete Ki+ for a wine he describes as a “delicious
Fume Blanc incognito as a Forza, paired only with a nice wide
brimmed glass to bring out its
marvelous fragrance”. Ryan Miller
won two awards, Best Pairing for
Sharon Weeks Ca+oo Paso Robles
Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, paired
with Societe Roquefort, and Best
Overall for Jen Pfeiffer The Rebel

Six boats started our Memorial Day Silk Scarf Race to the lake outlet and back.
One boat capsized when the wind suddenly picked up, and another went to
the rescue. Skipper Jeff Freedman, with Tess as crew, sailed their O’Day Mari-
ner to victory. Garry Klink and Tom and Mary O’Neill served as race Com-
mi+ee. Tom Ogden came in second with Linda as crew, sailing their Flying
Scot. Dave and Pat Urban and George Inch and family also completed the
race. Jeff was presented the silk scarf by Tess, his admirer. Six handicap races
on two racing dates have been held as of Sunday June 23. Our pontoon boat,
the Douglas, has been a great commi+ee boat!
