Scientists are unsure exactly how long the volcano will keep erupting...it could be days or up to two years

A volcano near Eyjafjallajokull glacier was dormant for 200 years but awoke and erupted on March 20, 2010 causing a 1 kilometer long fissure on an ice field, spewing lava hundreds of meters high. The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull forced the country to close its airspace and evacuate more than 500 people. The Eyjafjallajokull volcano is located in south Iceland, about 120 km east of Icelandic capital city Reykjavik

Holiday companies are offering night-time coach journeys to the eruption site and flights around the crater

Helicopter tours around the erupting crater are being offered to tourists from around £500

People watched the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupt this week in Iceland

This image is taken with a 200mm lens so the two persons are not that close to the eruption. They stand on another small mountain about 400m away from it. The lens just fools the eye.

When the 1000°C hot lava mass and the snow/ice come into contact huge clouds of steam are formed. Occasional explosions also occur as steam gets trapped under hardened lava.
