Do you know your heart?

Do you know your “heart”?

http://www.thewayonline.org.uk/heart.html

What is the “heart”?

• American Heritage Dictionary– Second main definition: The vital center and

source of one's being, emotions, and sensibilities.

What is special about your “heart”?

• Sin, which defiles us, comes from the heart (Matthew 15:19–20; Acts 5:3).

• The Bible says that we receive Jesus Christ into our hearts by faith (Ephesians 3:17).

• The Holy Spirit dwells in our hearts (2 Corinthians 1:21–22).

• God writes his laws in our hearts (Hebrews 8:10).

• We speak according to what is in our hearts (Luke 6:45).

Who can see your “heart”?

• 1 Samuel 16:7 – But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not look at

his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

What should you do with your “heart”?

• Matthew 22:36-40– 36 "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the

law?" – 37 Jesus said to him, ""You shall love the LORD your

God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.'

– 38 This is the first and great commandment. – 39 And the second is like it: "You shall love your

neighbor as yourself.' – 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law

and the Prophets."

#191- Luke 7:36-50

• 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil,

• 38 and stood at His feet behind Him weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed them with the fragrant oil.

• 39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman this is who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.”

• 42 And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?”

• 45 You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in.

• 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil.

#191- Luke 7:36-50

• 47 Therefore I say to you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.”

• 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” • 49 And those who sat at the table with Him

Parable of the Sower

#192- Luke 8:4-18

• 4 And when a great multitude had gathered, and they had come to Him from every city, He spoke by a parable:

• 5 “A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell by the wayside; and it was trampled down, and the birds of the air devoured it.

• 6 Some fell on rock; and as soon as it sprang up, it withered away because it lacked moisture.

• 7 And some fell among thorns, and the thorns sprang up with it and choked it.

• 8 But others fell on good ground, sprang up, and yielded a crop a hundredfold.” When He had said these things He cried, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

#192- Luke 8:4-18

• 9 Then His disciples asked Him, saying, “What does this parable mean?”

• 10 And He said, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is given in parables, that       ‘ Seeing they may not see,      And hearing they may not understand.’

#192- Luke 8:4-18

• 11 “Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.• 12 Those by the wayside are the ones who hear; then the

devil comes and takes away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

• 13 But the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.

• 14 Now the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity.

• 15 But the ones that fell on the good ground are those who, having heard the word with a noble and good heart, keep it and bear fruit with patience.

Big picture

Say the following out loud

• Seed= God’s Word

• Ground= heart

4 Different Hearts

1) By the wayside

1) By the wayside

• Ground is too hard– Seeds cannot go

through– Lies on top– Birds eat seeds

• Bird= devil• People who refuse to

hear God’s Word have God’s Word snatched away by devil

2) Rocky ground

2) Rocky ground

• Ground is too shallow– Seeds get through– Grows– Roots cannot get deeper

because blocked by rocks

• Rocks= shallowness• People who are

emotionally passionate, but face temptation or difficulty and fall away

3) Thorny ground

3) Thorny ground

• Ground is too crowded– Seeds get through– Grows– Thorns grow too– Thorns choke plants

• Thorns=cares, riches, pleasures

• People who pursue worldly items and do not mature

4) Good ground

4) Good ground

• Ground is just right– Seeds get through– Grows– Produces fruit

• Fruit= good works• People who hear

God’s Word and keep it, and produce good works because of it

#192- Luke 8:4-18

• 16 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a vessel or puts it under a bed, but sets it on a lampstand, that those who enter may see the light.

• 17 For nothing is secret that will not be revealed, nor anything hidden that will not be known and come to light.

• 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

#192- Luke 8:4-18

• For whoever has… what???– God’s Word in their hearts

• 18 Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has [God’s Word in their hearts], to him more will be given; and whoever does not have [God’s Word in their hearts], even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”
