Hitler had already begun to take land but he didn’t want to take land that would make the Soviet Union go to war with Germany.

Non-Aggression

So, Hitler signed a non-aggression treaty with Stalin. They agreed to not go to war with each other.

Why did the Soviet Union sign the treaty?

The army didn’t feel ready to fight ANOTHER war. They were hurt VERY badly during WWI.

Helped encourage people to not give up and to believe that Great Britain would defeat the Germans.

Because the British people didn’t give up

And the air-force was able to shoot down German planes….

The Eastern Front

After 2 years of fighting, Hitler broke his treaty with Stalin.

July 27, 1941- Hitler invaded the Soviet Union

The Soviet Union joined the Allies

The Soviet Union lost millions of soldiers BUT they were

able to defeat the Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942.

Why were the Soviet Union soldiers able to defeat the Germans?

1. The Germans weren’t prepared (ready) for the harsh Soviet winter.

Tanks and weapons didn’t work in extreme cold.

Why were the Soviet Union soldiers able to defeat the Germans?

2. The German soldiers didn’t have enough supplies.

Germany surrenders

On Feb 2, 1943 Germany surrendered.

HUGE turning point in the war.

The Pacific Front

The U.S. wanted to be neutral but it favored the Allies.

U.S. sent military aid to the British

Pearl Harbor On Dec 7, 1941

Japan bombed Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.

U.S. declares war

The U.S. declared war on Japan. The next day Germany and Italy

declared war on the U.S.

War on 3 continents In North Africa

Italy and Germany tried to get more land (rich in oil resources)

But American and British troops stopped them.

By 1943 the Allies were winning the war

What happened in Italy? Italians kicked

Mussolini out of office and surrendered to the Allies.

The Allies took control of Italy.

died but the Allies won and took over Paris

At the same time…..

The Soviet Union moved in to attach Germany on the east.

On May 8, 1945 Germany surrendered and Hitler shot and killed himself.

American planes dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945.

160,000 people killed or injured

3 days later- The U.S. dropped ANOTHER atomic bomb on Nagasaki, Japan

Japan surrendered. The war was officially over August
